My dt are 12, I have always tried to make sure they have a healthy well balanced diet and have given vitamins etc. So they ate healthy weight and great teeth.
However my son yesterday was surprised that someone had sugar on their cereal. I can remember not giving them sugar when they were little and now they have honey and raisens in porridge but how do they do not know its normal to have sugar on cereal?
They do have sweets etc and I've found gob stoppers great long journey additions.
Ps this is a light hearted thread, no judging going on here and they have had as many Greg's sausage rolls as the next kid :-).

I’m worried about the choking aspect of gobstoppers in the car!

@Hekatestorch

Grin sugar on coral! Lol...

I used to put sugar on cornflakes and Weetabix(we never had rice crispies, I don't think)-I'm 52 so would've been a 70s childhood. Today's cereals seem to be sweeter generally, even the 'plain' ones- although I accept that it could just be that my taste buds have changed.

But we also used to have sugar in white bread sandwiches, eat sweetened condensed milk from the tin, have biscuits every day (big boxes of broken biscuits from the cash and carry) and of course in tea. Grin

Porridge was never nice though, even with brown sugar and cream on. Bleugh.

@BarbaraofSeville

Grin. I'm always surprised about how much ketchup a lot of people use, but I do manage to stop myself from commenting.

We take years to finish a bottle and only have it on fish and chips which we don't have very often, but any time I eat with other people they always seems to use loads of ketchup.

I agree. Ketchup is gross. What's the point in masking the flavour of your food with that strong and horrible taste. It's also loaded with sugar.

Hmm eating raw sugar makes me feel a bit ill as I don't like the crunch ! But honey and banana on weetabix or shreddies yes!!! I used to eat sugar in cereal as a kid too but wouldn't now and probably wouldn't put it on my kids cereal

I don't think it is normal to put sugar on cereal anymore. I used to put a ton on as a kid. My DC are adults and never have. I think even plain cereal has a sweeter taste nowadays. None of us put sugar on or in anything.

I don't bake so just have a small bag in for visitors, but I suspect it might be very old now. Thank goodness we don't get many sugar using visitors.

Wow this blew up Grin
I know gob stoppers are bad but at 12 I thought I could trust them not to be silly with them.up to this year its been haribo all the way. Anything to keep my motor mouth quiet for 5 minutes.
Honey I always feel is better than sugar as we get it locally do it helps with hay-fever and asthma.
I eat muesli with sugar but am a size 12 and have all my own teeth, it's very much a case of do what I say not what I do.

vampirethriller · 01/09/2021 15:46

My grandma used to give us porridge with coffee sugar crystals on. I like it with black treacle these days.
