Am I the sugar police winner?

My dt are 12, I have always tried to make sure they have a healthy well balanced diet and have given vitamins etc. So they ate healthy weight and great teeth.
However my son yesterday was surprised that someone had sugar on their cereal. I can remember not giving them sugar when they were little and now they have honey and raisens in porridge but how do they do not know its normal to have sugar on cereal?
They do have sweets etc and I've found gob stoppers great long journey additions.
Ps this is a light hearted thread, no judging going on here and they have had as many Greg's sausage rolls as the next kid :-).

Oh I didn't know it was a toddler Grin It was the 'bad' re any food that jumped out, and the smugly said bit! Toddler bad is different Wink

QueenHofScotland · 31/08/2021 10:03

Ah just reading back and so many of you love sugar on your cereal! Shock

I LOVE crunchy cornflakes with cold milk…the sugar would ruin it for me!

And yet I love sugary treats otherwise

OhRene · 31/08/2021 10:03

@BarbaraofSeville

Grin. I'm always surprised about how much ketchup a lot of people use, but I do manage to stop myself from commenting.

We take years to finish a bottle and only have it on fish and chips which we don't have very often, but any time I eat with other people they always seems to use loads of ketchup.

We're a bit like that. It's only ever brought out for good ol' chicken nuggets or bacon butties. It HAS to be Heinz though. That said, I accidentally ordered the Heinz 50%less sugar and salt and we couldn't tell the difference so that's our new go to. When I buy some more next year it'll be the healthier version.

Oh and OP, Weetablix needs sugar in our house. We don't go in for honey, yoghurt, blueberries and all that stuff. It's probably the only cereal we buy that does need it though.

@HeyGirlHeyBoy no I love bananas but not in anything. I like them underripe and on their own.

@QueenHofScotland yes it is totally normal. My kids have sugar on weetabix and shreddies because they want to. Not on Frosties or Cheerios but if they wanted too I guess they could.

Is sugar total evil or something? I can think of worse things,

burritofan · 31/08/2021 10:08

@HeyGirlHeyBoy I think we’re on the same page! Worst part of office chitchat for me is the colleague lunch inspection and the “Oh, you’re being good/bad today”. No I’m not, I’m just EATING MY LUNCH. (Often with ketchup.)

The toddler is pretty smug about most things though Grin

Seeline · 31/08/2021 10:09

Another 50 yo who has always had sugar on her cereal. Only have the plain ones though, not Frosties, Cheerios etc with sugar/honey - they are too sweet. I have it still because I hate the taste of milk and the sugar disguises it. I have never liked milk so this is my way of getting some down me Grin It's only a tiny sprinkle!

myotherusernameistaken · 31/08/2021 10:09

Are you new to MN? Grin

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 31/08/2021 10:13

Oh burritofan I cannot stand that 'Are you being good?' shite either Grin Definitely same page!

TheVolturi · 31/08/2021 10:17

One of mine with sn practically lives on cereal but never has sugar on. Why would you?

NoYOUbekind · 31/08/2021 10:23

I know it's lighthearted but what do you think honey and raisins are?

might be a touch sensitive as have just had a spat with a frenemy about 'sugar free' cooking. Molasses and honey don't count, appaz

Thunderface · 31/08/2021 10:38

foodnetwork.co.uk/recipes/cherry-limeade
I'm fairly relaxed about sugar but my teeth nearly climbed back into my gums when I saw the recipe I linked being made by the Pioneer Woman. It's basically 7up with a whole cup of sugar and the syrup from a jar of cherries added!

Polkadots2021 · 31/08/2021 10:44

@dementedpixie

But honey and raisins are basically sugar too I did used to sprinkle sugar on corn flakes and rice krispies as a child as we never had the really sugary or chocolatey cereals in the house

Only one of mine eats cereal and it tends to be cheerios which are quite sweet anyway

This is true, can't add up the sheer number of clients I've had who wanted to lose weight and couldn't work out why they hadn't after swapping to honey dried fruit and the like Grin (not criticising you OP, theres a lot more to health than losing weight isn't there, and a lot of reasons to like the idea of kids eating raisins and honey instead of sugar!)
Row1n · 31/08/2021 10:57

@Seeline same here

Flatdisco · 31/08/2021 11:01

@Pikamoo

Is it normal to have sugar on cereal? What kind of cereal? I don't know anyone who does this!
Yep this. I eat plenty of sugar but I don't actually think thi is normal.
SuperCaliFragalistic · 31/08/2021 11:04

I love sugar on cornflakes but then I was raised in the 80s when sugar was a food group.

BaringasMare · 31/08/2021 11:05

I think it was normal when I was a kid, but I don’t know anyone who does it now or would allow their kids to!

itsgettingwierd · 31/08/2021 11:09

@knittingaddict

I put sugar on weetabix as a child and I still have some kind of sugar on my porridge, usually brown, which melts over it and tasted divine. I used to have shreddies with hot milk and sugar too. That's about it though. Most cereal is quite sweet enough on it's own.
Brown sugar AND single cream is my porridge treat! I usually do this for the few days over Xmas where I need a good breakfast that will keep me going!
Sillysop92 · 31/08/2021 11:14

@myotherusernameistaken not particularly new but I obviously not on the bill with this!
I’m off to grab a coffee- with sugar - natch! ☕️😂

Bluntness100 · 31/08/2021 11:16

I’m fifty two, it was normal when I was a kid to put sugar on your cornflakes.

Now adays I think it’s really only porridge and Weetabix folks put it on. With only a small minority putting it on other cereals

If I suggested to my 24 year old daughter to put sugar on her cereal she’d think I was nuts.😂

He he Grin
ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 31/08/2021 11:31

I like weetabix with brown sugar and banana, or white sugar and strawberries.
Porridge with honey or syrup.
I do have a sweet tooth though, and if I used sugar in my coffee (I use sweetener instead) I probably wouldn’t have any teeth by now 😂

BeckyWithTheGoodHair5629456 · 31/08/2021 11:43

When I was a kid I was allowed to put sugar on weetabix and cornflakes.
No way would I let my children do this! Grin

BeckyWithTheGoodHair5629456 · 31/08/2021 11:45

Oh god yes sugar on Rice Krispies! Amazing.
I'm not adverse to my children having sugar id just consider sugar on cereal unnecessary. So as I say not what I do and all that!

frogswimming · 31/08/2021 11:45

Depends on the cereal. I wouldn't put sugar on Frosties or crave.

zukiecat · 31/08/2021 11:47

If I have cereal which is very rarely I always put sugar on it.

I eat it dry too, as I don't eat dairy and can't stand milk anyway.
