Please talk to me about long, warm, waterproof, high quality winter coats

Hello.

I'm fed up with having winter coats which last a couple of years and fall apart. I'm willing to spend up to about £250, I think, for a really good one which might last me many many years. I need it to be warm, waterproof and long (at least to the knee), with a good big hood and good big pockets. I'd also like it to be not hideous, but fashion isn't my main focus here. If it's of relevance, I'm 5'7" and a size 8-10.

Any ideas of the best places to look for this kind of coat? I'm getting overwhelmed with ads when I Google...

Many TIA

North face deffo. I bought one last winter before I knew winter was going to last until May!! The best decision ever - I originally bought it for watching my DS play rugby & football…I ended up wearing it everywhere, even to work. Was about £220 in the sale at Cotswold.

Moncler.

SummerSazz · 30/08/2021 19:17

Another vote for Didrikson - although I can only wear a thin layer under it on dog walks as it's so warm. 100% waterproof as tested on said dog walks.....

Nordstrom · 30/08/2021 19:18

Didrikson! I love mine and am loathe to give it up, even though it's really seen better days now.

SummerSazz · 30/08/2021 19:19

I give up!

@MMM2

Barbour jackets last forever !
Sadly, they don’t now. Recently very poor quality.
WowIlikereallyhateyou · 30/08/2021 19:21

@Mariell

Moncler.
For £250? Not a real one anyways!
SummerSazz · 30/08/2021 19:22

Actually I lied. Mines the Erika.

£150 down from £250 at Cotswold outdoor. Had 5 stars from 166 happy customers!

Arcteryx or North Face

alphasox · 30/08/2021 19:24

Another vote for north face.

I’ve had this parka for 9 winters so far and it still looks in good condition. Plus it keeps me warm on beachy snowy walks and standing at the side of a rugby/hockey/football pitch in wind and rain. I call it my duvet coat. Also washes well in my machine.

offyougotwantychops · 30/08/2021 19:56

That Didrikson coat is only waterproof to 10,000, that's not brilliantly waterproof for the price, and you are likely to get seeping in a torrential downpour.
To be anywhere near waterproof you want 20,000.
The higher the hydrostatic column the greater the waterproofing qualities. Obviously if a coat is genuinely 100% waterproof if won't be breathable and then you'll get condensation from sweating and still get wet!

Sorry, I forgot there was a limited budget.

Warandpeas · 30/08/2021 21:23

Derailing slightly but when does new Didrikson's stock come online? All the sizes across the main online retailers have sold out and now thanks to this thread I'm desperate to treat myself to a proper coat Grin

KeepYourCustardCreams · 31/08/2021 14:28

Thank you all again for this.

I'm hovering between all the relevant websites and have found several which look perfect, so am now just choosing between them. Fantastic!

Thanks again Flowers

Ooh I'd love one of these. The didrekson is great but no hood? Even if I have a hat on I still think a hood is important for sub zero windy weather

Stickytreacle · 31/08/2021 14:38

I have a Didrikson Nadine it's bettered most of my other specialist brands hands down, it's a couple of years old now and as good as new. Would definitely recommend one.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/08/2021 14:47

I should hope so. Not a dig at you but it always puzzles me when people say things like 'I've had this thing for not very long at all and it isn't wearing out yet' Smile

As it happens my lightweight North Face 'pac a mac' that I take when it looks like it will probably stay dry but there's a reasonable chance of one of those short but heavy showers that absolutely drenches you is starting to look like it might need replacing because the zip is getting very unreliable. I tried to zip it up the other day because it was really windy and it just wouldn't. Otherwise it is fine except the hole on the sleeve that is covered in duct tape after I caught it on barbed wire. I know that it is 18 years old and I've worn it a lot.

@CatAlice. There's several Didriksons coats with hoods if that's what you want.

Robertthebrucesthistle · 31/08/2021 14:51

I have a 6/7 year old Didrikson and god I love it. I work outdoors at times and it is the only coat I’ve ever had that has not seeped water in. It’s so waterproof I have to wear waterproof trousers if out walking dog as the water literally flows off the coat onto my thighs.
I need a new coat but think it’s probably got at least another winter in it yet.
