I totally forgot about this! Just found it at the back of the fridge. It expired on Friday, would you eat it anyway or should I bin it??

Would you eat this?

It depends.... if it was delivered in a chilled van and put straight in my fridge that I know keeps stuff decently cold,

then I'd open it and sniff... if OK I'd check there was no watery stuff... if not, I'd cook it until it was really hot all the way through, then taste it. If OK, then I'd eat it.... (pretty much like most things)

MolkosTeenageAngst · 30/08/2021 17:40

Personally I’d probably eat it but I can understand why lots of posters are saying they wouldn’t take the risk.

JackOfGentleman · 30/08/2021 19:48

Didn't expect such a large response! Thanks everyone. We didn't eat it in the end, it was for me and DD so didn't want to risk it.

Yes, I do agree that there's far too much food wastage. This had hidden from me at the back of the fridge so had escaped my eagle, non-wastage eyes.

I genuinely have no idea how me and my family have survived for the past 50 plus years with never a case of food poisoning between us. Going by smell and taste. Quite astonishing 😀

Me too! I've never had food poisoning and prioritise smell and taste over dates.

Thank God we all have @Bluntness100 to teach us a lesson though. And in such a non- patronising way, too.

QueenHofScotland · 30/08/2021 20:19

No I wouldn’t eat it.

Would love to speak to someone who works in food production to see how long these types of things actually are fine.

WeAreTheHeroes · 30/08/2021 20:22

Are you near me OP? We'll have it.

Haggisfish3 · 30/08/2021 21:28

Once you’ve had evil food poisoning, it makes you much less blasé! I got it from rice kept at room temperature for a few hours at a party. And dc have both had salmonella and were so incredibly ill. It’s just not worth the risk now for me.

😆 A MNs thread wouldn't be the same without her sanctimony.

Bluntness100 · 30/08/2021 22:09

You’re all welcome 😃

Quite concerning about how little knowledge of food safety been shown on here

Um, Bluntness ...

You can’t kill it by turning it to lava.

Not sure about lava, but heating to a high temperature & making sure it's hot throughout absolutely does kill most bacteria.

Two products to be extremely cautious of are raw pork & chicken, largely due to our factory-farming methods (immune systems of the animals become compromised, leading to more likelihood of bacteria).

However, broadly Bluntness** makes a valid point. It's not so much that something starts to happen after the use-by date; it's the question of how well a processed food product, like OP's, has been produced in the first place. The overall standards & quality of the meat & other ingredients. It might not be great to start with & then will be a lot poorer 3 days after the use by date.

Haggisfish3 · 30/08/2021 23:05

Dh works in food processing and testing and point blank would not entertain eating this.
