I totally forgot about this! Just found it at the back of the fridge. It expired on Friday, would you eat it anyway or should I bin it??

Would you eat this?
OP posts:
PatsyJStone · 30/08/2021 16:35

Yes, how much meat is actually in it anyway? Often these aren’t even 40% meat. I’ve never heard of mince being notorious for food poisoning.

muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 16:36

What are people eating that you get the shits when eating things a few days out of date?

Haggisfish3 · 30/08/2021 16:37

No. Mince is bad as more exposed surface area for bacteria to grow on.

Pokhora · 30/08/2021 16:37

@fallfallfall

I’d make sure to heat it thoroughly and yes I’d eat it. Best by dates are not expiry dates.
It has a use by date not a best before date.
bamboocat · 30/08/2021 16:37

The 27th is estimated to be the last day it would be ok to eat before it starts to go off @muffinffaces and it also relies on it being kept at the ideal temperature. Not always achievable in a domestic fridge.

I wouldn't risk it, although I know a DH who would... Grin

Haggisfish3 · 30/08/2021 16:37

And gravy is bad, too. All the right nutrients for bacteria.

thisplaceisweird · 30/08/2021 16:38

Definitely eat it. They always add in a buffer, food doesn't just switch from good to bad in a day

www.vwa.co.uk/blog/news/which-foods-are-most-likely-to-give-you-food-poisoning-foodpoisoning/ The worst culprit for food poisoning is minced beef, which is used in dishes such as cottage pie, chilli, lasagne, pies and especially burgers. The reason minced beef (and other minced meats) is the most likely to give you food poisoning is because it has a larger surface area than, say, a steak. If you’re cooking it yourself, make sure it is cooked all the way through.
helentomelon · 30/08/2021 16:44

If it doesn't smell then absolutely. More money than sense these people throwing things out that arent off.

There are so many variables that mean things go off quicker or slower than the computer thinks they will so they have to be ultra conservative.

Newbabynewhouse · 30/08/2021 16:44

Yes I have also heard mince is bad... chicken worse though... mince is bad as it has been minced (obviously Grin) so it's not the same as cooking a steak which you can eat 'blue' if u really wish.. can't remember why it's different now something like the surface has been mashed up inside and that's the part that need a to be cooked thoroughly (you can tell I hardly know what I'm on about)

Albgo · 30/08/2021 16:44

@muffinffaces

Feel a bit sick by how many people would consider still eating this

if it's absolutely fine to eat on the 27th then it's unlikely to be rotten on the 30th when kept in the fridge.

Maybe I'm too squeamish then 🤢
muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 16:47

Disagree as manufacturers factor in a buffer. Do you think it's ok to eat at 11.55 pm on the 27th but going off on the 28th at 1am? I don't.
Plus most people only have domestic fridges.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 30/08/2021 16:48

I wouldn’t. I often go a day or two over the use-by date if something smells ok, but I wouldn’t push a mince dish to three days over.

muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 16:50

Meat that is off tends to have a smell & texture or colour changes.

lemoncrisp · 30/08/2021 16:57

If it looks and smells ok I would eat it myself. But I'd probably offer dh something else. (No dc at home)

Oblomov21 · 30/08/2021 17:01

I'd cook it and see. I'm sure it'll be fine. Your'll soon know.

nancybotwinbloom · 30/08/2021 17:02

I wouldn't chance it personally

See, I'd use him as the guinea pig

Quite concerning about how little knowledge of food safety been shown on here

No it’s not an expiry or best before date, no it doesn’t go off on the stroke of midnight no it doesn’t go rotten in three days,

What does happen though is bacteria is growing on the surface all the time, after the use by date enough bacteria is on it you risk illness. The longer after the use by date the more bacteria has grown and the higher your risk. This bacteria is not visible to thr naked eye or detectable at this stage on your taste buds. You can’t kill it by turning it to lava.

So sure the op might be fine, but as it’s had three more days to grow bacteria she’s a good risk of getting food poisoning, the vast majority of cases are from the home. Because people have little knowledge of bacteria and food.

Thethreecs · 30/08/2021 17:09

3 days.... Yeah go for it. Let us know how you get on

But cooking through does kill bacteria, not if it's gone off already but texture & colour will generally show that.

muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 17:12

Technically it's not quite 3 days until midnight 😁

RogueV · 30/08/2021 17:13

Yes I would eat it, it’s only a few days!!

Haggisfish3 · 30/08/2021 17:16

And the bacteria can release toxins that aren’t destroyed by cooking.

VladmirsPoutine · 30/08/2021 17:24

People not showering daily oft gets the green light on here but whether or not a 3-day expired ready-meal should be eaten brings out the healthy & safety experts Confused
