Too good to go boxes

Got my first box this week.

What's the quality like in yours, you get them? I'm not that impressed, there were a few mushy tomatoes and plums, brown and papery broad bean pods and stuff with insect holes. Stuff I wouldn't consider too good to go, some of it is fit for the bin. But, it was from an independent organic place, so maybe that's why. It won't be wasted, what I dont want and is suitable will go in the dogs bowl.

I'm picking up a box from a mini supermarket later and a patisserie, so I'll compare quality with those, hopefully they'll be better.

Also, have you discovered any amazing recipes/concoctions with the odds and ends?

I got 1 the other week, someone had a thread on here so I thought I'd give it a go. It was from a small sainsburys express. I got 4 tuna sandwiches, grapes which were mainly fine a pasty that's still in the freezer and something else I can't remember! It was ok, a bit of fun like opening an adult goody bag but I wouldn't go out of my way to get them regularly.

Where I used to live there was a bakery near me (a chain like greggs but smaller) who did amazing ones.

You’d turn up to collect and they would give you a choice of freshly baked loaves from that day, all that pastries and cakes they had left.

I used to do it at the end of a particularly broke week and for £3, we had a fun dinner and the children had lovely treats for the weekend. I’d freeze the bread too as they would slice it for you.

Yeah I don't think I will. I might get one more, from the big supermarket, when it comes up but I'm not impressed so far.

We got one from Costa to try that contained 4 breakfast sandwiches. They were ok but not that great value and no variety so I wouldn't bother again until more local places are doing it- here it's only Costa, spar supermarkets and an eat all you can global buffet- not too fussed on any of those really

BetsyBumble · 28/08/2021 12:54

I got a great one from Greggs recently when I was the last person to turn up - they had a bag generously filled already with a few filled rolls, 4pk sausage rolls (yuuum), and a few sweet things anyway, but the guy said also to take a few things from stuff sitting on the counter as they were just about to lock up!

nzborn · 28/08/2021 13:01

Its very hit and miss, when l first found out about these it was in an advertorial and it was Morrisons and such a good deal but my local was mainly veg and already stickered so when you added up the price it wasn't even worth the money l paid plus one can only eat so much cabbage.
I use it in other places mainly smaller bakeries, you work out where you get the best value and return but this too is risky with one day good one day not so much.

3Br1tnee · 28/08/2021 13:23

The meals might be worth getting but they are for collection so late, 10-12pm. I suppose irsgoodif you finish work late and pick one up after.

They aren't so great really

Who wants to eat going out of date sandwiches and sausage rolls at 9pm?

N0PE · 28/08/2021 14:19

We've only tried the Gregg's ones and they were really good.

4 sausage rolls
1 scotch pie
Huge Mexican chicken roll
2 yum yums
2 doughnuts

All for 2.59. Picked it up at 5.30 and just added stuff from fridge and had a slightly odd but tasty dinner. Grin

AlmostSummer21 · 28/08/2021 14:23

This is the first I've heard of them, but they're a great idea. I hate all the food waste. Unfortunately I am too limited in my diet (health issues & vegetarian) to get any.

If I wasn't I'd be right in there with the restaurant & bakery ones!!

clary · 28/08/2021 14:33

My best one was from Costa, four sandwiches and four muffins fir £3. Bargain. Sandwiches were fine that evening and the next day too (never an issue getting that sort of thing eaten here) and muffins were delicious two days later. Just BC it's sell by, doesn't mean it's not fit to eat after that day.

Had a good one from Waitrose in a garage, but I do agree they are variable.

yupyupyup · 28/08/2021 14:51

I use 2G2G regularly, mostly when on holiday in the UK. It's so hit and miss, but agree that Greggs is great. They seem to have a policy on what to put in the bags, as it's fairly consistent throughout the UK. YO sushi let's you pick from what's left in the fridges (great!), the supermarkets are usually rubbish, and some of the smaller, independent places will give sandwiches that have been sitting out all day or stuff they'd never be able to sell. I still find it cheap and handy for when I'm on a city break, but you need to be prepared to be disappointed.

SukonthaM · 28/08/2021 15:02

Mine have been hit and miss. The pretzel one I got was crap, I bought 3 magic bags from costa coffee which should have been £45 worth of food. I received three cheese and ham paninis, 3 ham and cheese sandwiches and a vegan cheese toastie. I did however buy 3 at a local smokehouse, the food in them was UNREAL!! Each box had mashed potato, corn on the cob and pretty much every meat imaginable, loads of ribs, lamb chops, burgers, bratwurst etc

Well clearly you keep them for the next day.

I am a massive fan of the app, have been using it for well over a year. BP garage by us has a M&S shop, their bags are generally excellent and we've had chicken portions, pork, sausages, steak.

Greggs is also very good value but not the healthiest option. Morrison's fruit and veg mostly, excellent value.

Not a fan of the Costa/Pret/Starbucks bags, retail prices in those outlets are very high, you could easily pay £3 for a cake and £5 for a sandwich. So even when they are giving you stuff for a quarter of retail, when the original selling price is high, you still only get 2 cakes and 2 sandwiches in a bag costing £4.

Arsebucket · 28/08/2021 15:22

Just looked on mine now, I haven’t since we moved across the country. All that’s on there are Spars and a co op within 8 miles.

MumofSpud · 28/08/2021 15:24

It can be v hit and miss- I have had a bag from Costa with £20 worth of stuff inside (no tuna - result!!)

Hopeislost · 28/08/2021 15:30

I've found that some places are amazing and some are a bit rubbish! One local (chain) sushi place lets you pick any two boxes that are left, so if you pick the big boxes you get a lot of sushi!

hollyhocksarenotmessy · 28/08/2021 15:32

I've had 2.
Morrisons, pretty good fruit and veg, but otherwise lots of bread that wouldn't all fit in the freezer, so still got thrown out.

M&S - disappointing, 2 ready meals that didn't quite add up to the stated value at full price, already reduced so I kinda expected to get the bag value at the new prices? Not worth going for 2 ready meals we'd not normally eat.

BroccoliFloret · 28/08/2021 15:32

You should report the undervalue ones to TooGoodToGo, they usually refund with no quibbles.

SandysMam · 28/08/2021 15:32

Does no one worry about food poisoning eating out of date stuff the next day? I’m fine with best before being over but surely most of this stuff has use by dates that need to be obeyed? Or am I just being squeamish? Grin

BroccoliFloret · 28/08/2021 15:36

No, I don't worry in the slightest.

Who ever caught food poisoning from a cheese toastie? Or doughnuts or fruit and veg?

If a chicken salad sandwich is perfectly safe to eat at 8pm, it's still safe at midday for my lunch. Especially when it's been refrigerated in between.

Most of the ones I’ve bought have been restaurants who have cooked the food while I’ve waited. And the rest of the food is generally ‘best before’, I’ve not had a single thing out of date.

The use by dates are ridiculously conservative, everything is totally fine the next day, honestly.

I have something from M&S that's a day out of date once or twice a week and have never found anything past its best or been ill because of this.

FuckingFabulous · 28/08/2021 16:32

Op, I spent a fortune on a veg box from a local farm during the pandemic and it was infested with beetles, scale bugs and snails munching their way through the food. I can't imagine how awful a "too good to go" would be from such an establishment if what I paid was for the premium offering.

I got one from gregs. It had three pasties, a cheese baguette and some pastries in. It was alright but I'm not desperate to repeat the experience
