5 years since my son died

I put this in chat because I really just wanted to say it where people would see it.
Do a first aid course.
Encourage your children to do a first aid course.
Talk to your teenagers about looking out for their friends, what to do in a bad situation, how to get help, have a plan for unexpected events.
Learn how to put somebody in the recovery position if they faint, fall, or have too much to drink, take something they shouldn't.
Such a simple thing to do that could save a life.
My son would be alive today if his friend had just turned him on his side.
I live with that every day of my life.
It happens more often than you would think.
St John's Ambulance and the Red Cross do courses, I am sure there are more.

Sending love and strength.

I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

I'm lucky to be first aid trained through work and through an organisation I volunteer with. I agree that everyone should do it. You can do a course in a day and you could save someone's life.

HollowTalk · 25/08/2021 16:28

I've been thinking of you, @endofthelinefinally as I knew the anniversary was coming up. That's such good advice and so kind of you to pass it on. It's really something that should be covered in school but I'm sure there are a lot of videos on YouTube that would be really useful to watch.

I am so sorry for your loss
Your advice is heartfelt - thank you for posting
Hoping you are getting through what must be a really hard day as best you can Flowers

ImAddictedToMyPhone · 25/08/2021 16:31

Im so sorry. 😔 First Aid should be taught at school, if they aren't already.

endofthelinefinally · 25/08/2021 16:34

I guess schools have so much to do already.
As PP said, you can do a "save a life" course in a day. I used to teach one back in my working life. The irony is not lost on me. Sad

@endofthelinefinally I’m very sorry, today must be an extra difficult day for you (I’m sure every day is though).

I have done several first aid courses through work & volunteering and I agree wholeheartedly with your advice. I hope people read & take heed.

I'm so very sorry for what you've lost and the thoughts still haunting you. What a wonderful thing to do today though; promoting that information could save a life.

You're clearly very strong and I'm sure you have family around you, but if you want to talk about your son or share some stories about him then we're here to listen.

endofthelinefinally · 25/08/2021 16:44

I wonder if MN would do some sort of promotion? It seems to me that it would be such a useful thing to raise on a parenting site.

I’m so sorry for your loss @endofthelinefinally.

My kids did do a SJA basic first aid course at school (private) and I’m an ex-HCP, who has taught first aid skills to them at home too. I agree that it should be taught in more schools and it’s a shame that funding isn’t prioritised for it, though with education budgets as bare-bones as they are, I can see why this is the case.

icedcoffees · 25/08/2021 16:47

I am so sorry for your loss Flowers

First Aid should be taught in school as part of PSHE imo.

Yes, we have loads to do, but I've often wished for a curriculum afternoon to be spared for all our pupils to receive basic first aid training.

Once every half-term - dedicated to life saving skills - it seems crazy to not do it. I'll keep emailing my Head and lobbying my local Assembly Member.

I hear you OP. And I send you much love and thoughts. Thanks

BlackAlys · 25/08/2021 16:49

I've just realised that I've quoted the wrong post. Sorry about that.

Libraryghost · 25/08/2021 16:51

I am so sorry. Life can be so cruel. I think what you are suggesting is a wonderful thing. I took a first aid course through work a few years ago after witnessing a man having a heart attack. Thankfully people were there who could help but it was then I realised I would have been useless. Even if it’s the most basic of first aid knowledge it could save a life

SeagullSong · 25/08/2021 16:57

So sorry for your loss OP Flowers. Thank you posting this, my training is long overdue an update and this has kicked me up the arse to get it booked.

Happylittlethoughts · 25/08/2021 16:58

I will do this wih my family tonight.
Your poor boy. Your poor heart ❤

Babyroobs · 25/08/2021 17:06

So sorry for your loss.
My 17 year old son and his friends ended up in the unfortunate position of having to try and resuscitate their friend after he was hit by a car doing 75mph in a 40 mph zone. It would not have made any difference as his injuries were not survival, but he has since done a first aid course. It's so sad that something so simple could have saved your son.

MrsRussell · 25/08/2021 17:12

OP, I'm going to ask on the back of your post if my Scouts can do a basic First Aid course.
I'm so sorry.

Quitelikeacatslife · 25/08/2021 17:29

So sorry for your loss, I'm going to discuss with my teens tonight after your post, you are very brave, thank you x

gloriousoldsheets · 25/08/2021 17:47

I'm so sorry xx

YoComoManzanas · 25/08/2021 17:52

I'm sorry for your loss.
This is easily something they could put on the bbc and in between the regular programs. Public info type 1min segments. Even tiny pop has a float to live ditty (save a life from drowning) between programmes which is a fab idea, targeting kids.

Chachachawoo · 25/08/2021 18:08

Sorry for your terrible loss and for all your pain.
Thank you for raising this issue.
Sending love and strength to you

IHateCoronavirus · 25/08/2021 18:15

Sending you much love and strength. Thank you for raising this. I whole heartedly agree. And would also like to stress how important refresher courses are. Flowers

endofthelinefinally · 25/08/2021 20:34

Thank you for your responses.
Tell your friends and families.
@Babyroobs, I am so sorry for the loss of your son's friend. What a horrific experience. So sad.
