Books for a 7yo confident reader

Can anyone share with me any books their 7ish-yo DC have enjoyed? We’ve hit a bit of a reading rut. DS is an excellent reader and mainly leans towards fiction or comics - he loves an encyclopaedia or fact book. But he seems bored of everything right now - we’re re-reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the umpteenth time.

We visit the library and he’s tried a few from there, including some Dick King-Smith and David Walliams and wasn’t keen on them. Is he too young for Harry Potter?

Happy to hear any ideas!

My 7yo has read the first 4 Harry Potter - she could read the rest but I think the content is too much for her. Both my DC love any Enid Blyton, easy enough reading but with stories that hold their interest. David Baddiel books seem to go down well, and Horrid Henry (which I hate).

Kids who like comics also like - Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Big Nate, Barry Loser etc. And we subscribe to the Phoenix and the Beano.

DS(just turned 8) enjoys the Tom Fletcher books (currently reading The Danger Gang).

He also enjoyed the Wizards of Once books.

The Treehouse Series by Andy Griffiths. My son loves them.

BeeFloof · 25/08/2021 14:06

Ah yes - he’s read some HH at school, I wasn’t keen either!

Thanks - that’s interesting about Harry Potter, I’ see if he likes it. I found a lovely set in a charity shop when he was a baby and I’ve been waiting for a time to bust them out!

My DS loves:

The Marsh Road Mysteries
Tom Gates
The Creakers
The Christmasaurus
The first 2 or 3 Harry Potter
The Impossible Boy

Depending on reading level...

  • Adventures on Trains (first one is the Highland Falcon Thief)
  • Adventures of Mr Penguin
  • Roman Mysteries
-Atticus Claw

For an easier read

  • Fabio the Flamingo detective
  • Dogman (these are comic book style)

My son read Lord of the Rings at that age...

(I did try to dissuade him, remembering how I'd got bogged down in it aged 11 - and I was a much better reader than he - but he insisted)

He was eight and a half when Deathly Hallows came out, and waiting for it. I don't think it did him any harm, but I'm in a minority here (I don't see a problem with the Jacqueline Wilson books either).

How to train your dragon
Mr Gum

DS loves:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Bunny vs Monkey (comic)
Tintin (comic with lots of new vocab)
Wind in the Willows
many of Michael Morpugo’s books
Beast Quest series
and he has just read the first HP

Avatar the Last Airbender are fantastic graphic novels for children

Stompythedinosaur · 25/08/2021 14:22

Not too young for the first few Harry Potters (they get darker at book 4).

Agree that Tom Fletcher is great, as is the 13 Storey Tree House series (though this might be a bit of a low level if he is a strong reader). My dc also loved The Bad Guys which is a comic style book, but very funny.

Some David Walliams books are better than others - Gansta Granny is one of the better ones.

The Captain Underpants books are good.

DameAlyson · 25/08/2021 14:23

Narnia?

Or an older author such as E. Nesbit?

The Hobbit perhaps, but I'd probably leave it a year or two.

And dare I say Enid Blyton?

DorotheaHomeAlone · 25/08/2021 14:24

Dd turned 7 this month and has chewed through the first 5 HP books this year. She’s been told she has to wait now until she’s 8 for the next one.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 25/08/2021 14:25

She likes the Famous five and think we will try The hobbit next.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 25/08/2021 14:26

She also loves getting The Phoenix comic each week.

minipie · 25/08/2021 14:26

Tom Gates
Patricia Butchard
Chris Riddell (Ottoline series)
Diane Wynne Jones (Chrestomanci series)
Treehouse series
Mr Gum
Daisy series
Younger Terry Pratchett books
How to Train Your Dragon series

Sounds like he would love Horrible Histories

IkaBaar · 25/08/2021 14:28

Swallows and Amazons series?

warnc007 · 25/08/2021 14:33

My son is 7 and an avid reader, he's read quite a lot of the books mentioned and loved them, but is happy to try anything really. We make use of the local library and often ask the librarian for recommendations. I also use Amazon to look at a book he has liked and see what other people have bought or what it recommends.

evtheria · 25/08/2021 14:38

Seconding Chris Riddell - I seem to remember reading his Twig series in primary, can anyone else vouch for age suitability?

BlueChampagne · 25/08/2021 14:41

Maudlin Towers
Chicken Mission
Dave Pigeon
101 Dalmatians
Cows in Action

Definitely agree with How to Train your Dragon.

BlueChampagne · 25/08/2021 14:42

We started reading the Twig series to DS2 when he was about 5 ... you may need to look for Edge Chronicles. There are lots of them, and DS2 (now 11) is still a fan.

SadWife2020 · 25/08/2021 14:46

Definitely How to Train Your Dragon, also Wizards of Once (both Cressida Cowell)

TheWoleb · 25/08/2021 14:48

The Polar Bear Explorer's Club (4 books so far)
The Storm Keepers (and there is a second one I cant remember the name of)
Malamander and Gargantis
The Notebook of Doom (loads of them)
Skulduggery Pleasant (loads of them)
The Mr. Lemencello books. (4 or 5 of them. my son read the first one and came through shouting I LOVE MR LEMENCELLO!)
Sinclair's Mysteries (something like that. I cant remember the full name of the series).
A Town called Perfect (4 I think)
Nowhere Emporium and Elsewhere Emporium

TheWoleb · 25/08/2021 14:49

Wizards of Once is amazing. David Tennant does the audiobooks and they're great.

The Creakers
The Danger Gang
