Books for a 7yo confident reader

Can anyone share with me any books their 7ish-yo DC have enjoyed? We’ve hit a bit of a reading rut. DS is an excellent reader and mainly leans towards fiction or comics - he loves an encyclopaedia or fact book. But he seems bored of everything right now - we’re re-reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the umpteenth time.

We visit the library and he’s tried a few from there, including some Dick King-Smith and David Walliams and wasn’t keen on them. Is he too young for Harry Potter?

Happy to hear any ideas!

Adding Danny Wallace's Hamish books to the list.

Things enjoyed here:
Beast Quest from the library
Little House on the Prairie series (really! Lots of bears and wolves and guns and snowstorms etc)
Roald Dahl
Just William (bit of a stretch in reading level but he loves them)
Swallows and Amazons etc
Kay's Anatomy (if you're prepared for hearing a lot of poo jokes)
Roman Mysteries
Anything from Usborne

My avid-reader and advanced 7 year old has read and loved:

  • Famous Five (but disliked Secret Seven - too slow and boring)
  • Five Find Outers
  • Marsh Road Mysteries (was recommended on here for him recently, he quite enjoyed the first but prefers historical settings)
  • Murder Most Horrid (would say that's a level above)
  • Tom Gates series (at the easier end of scale)
  • Wimpy Kid series (at the easier end of scale)
  • Planet Omar (like Wimpy Kid/Tom Gates in style, but starring a Muslim family)
  • Demon Headmaster series
  • The Accidental Prime Minister
  • Worst Witch series
  • Daisy series (at easier end of scale)
  • Sherlock Holmes (young version - the short stories are made into individual books and abridged a little but still some challenging vocabulary)
  • Harry Potter (only first three, they get dark and longer from 4)
  • St Clares, Malory Towers, and Naughtiest Girl school series (girls school but he doesn't seem at all bothered)
  • He LOVED (as did we) Atinuke's No 1 Car Spotter series, set in rural Nigeria, but they towards the easier end of the scale.
  • Adores all the Horrible Histories (not for the faint-hearted, truly gruesome)
  • Some of the David Walliams books (but I dislike)
  • Started Beast Quest series, they're a bit too easy and he got bored quickly.
  • Tintin
  • Asterix
  • Jacqueline Wilson (some are definitely for older kids so watch content)
  • Anne Fine
  • Jeremy Strong (at the easier end)
  • Eva Ibbotson's fantasy books (watch out as she wrote YA too) - good for a HP fan and lovely humour.
  • And absolute favourite, Just William. We're reading these at bedtime at the moment and the whole family's in hysterics, then he takes them off to read the next short story.

They're definitely for younger readers, I think a good reader of 7-8 would be beyond them.

What about the Faraway Tree and the Wishing Chair? They're for younger readers too, but have some very original ideas. I re-read them recently for the first time in many years, and thoroughly enjoyed them!

My favourite Blytons are the Adventure series - Island of, etc. A bit more complex than the Famous Five, I think.

I think I do have some Enid Blyton stashed away somewhere. I did love the Famous Five - every time someone had a cold they’d be sent to stay somewhere with lovely countryside and fresh air to recuperate (and end up solving crimes of course)

My 7 year old has read all the Harry Potter books loved them and was fine with the content (I did warn him beforehand that characters died so he was expecting it.)
He's currently very fond of the Baby Aliens got my Teacher series by Pamela Butchart. Also likes Dragon Legend, Horrible Histories (and the spin offs Murderous Maths and Horrible Science), Kays Anatomy (although this did lead to slightly eye-watering questions about sperm....)and 13 storey Tree House series.

Oh, and I don't know if they're currently available, but the Jennings books, about the (mis)adventures of a small boy at prep school. The author, Anthony Buckeridge, was a prep schoolmaster, and he used to tell the stories to the boys at his school.
