SAHMs what will you do the first week your kids are back at school?!

A little over 2 weeks left of what's been a pretty hardcore summer school holidays. We haven't been abroad and we've endured a really crappy UK summer.

The first day mine go back, after the school run, I'm going to come home, change back in to my pyjamas and have a nap.

The rest of the first week will follow a similar pattern but I may enjoy a cup of tea and read the newspaper or a book in peace and quiet. I don't want to talk to anyone, or listen to anything, I just want to enjoy the quiet.

Mine are still preschoolers so only at preschool till lunchtime but every minute counts!

Indulge me with what you'll be doing when the kids are back at school...!

I am daydreaming of a very long, very hot bubble bath with a cup of coffee and some relaxing music playing.
I can have a bath now, sure, but it's punctuated by yelling at daughter because she's said something through a door and I didn't hear her properly, or she'll barge in and want to show me some video she is dining hilarious at the minute, or she'll want to know when I'm getting out because she wants a sandwich / drink / poo etc.

I love her.... Honest..

CaptainSpirit · 21/08/2021 21:39

DD1 is starting reception in Sept and I'll be nearly 37 weeks pregnant with DD3.
DD2 will only be 20 months so I plan to curl up with her when it's her naptime and get a few extra sleeps in while I can. 😴

TheCanyon · 21/08/2021 21:42

Ours went back on Wednesday, so...I

Wednesday, I sat in my jammies most of the day playing paid games and jumped dh at lunchtime.
Thursday, scrolled the net and played games
Friday, cuddled sick puppy all morning while playing games til dc finished school at 12.50.

So basically, sat in my arse playing games. I'm unwell atm though tbf.

I'm going to hit all the charity shops near me (about 8!) & have a good rummage then drink coffee in my silent house.

I've got a pile of outgrown toys & clothes that I need to ebay & probably a car boot full for the charity shop & another for the dump/recycling centre.

I want to go through the DCs rooms & have a good clear out & deep clean (behind/under the beds, wash the carpets & see if paint work needs a touch up).

I'm looking forward to it!

I have to say though, I've really enjoyed the summer holidays so far. I think now my DC are a bit older (12,11 & 9) they're pretty easy to entertain. They all still like parks & beaches & we've had a few day trips which they've enjoyed.

Still looking forward to coffee in silence though Wink

lpchill · 21/08/2021 21:42

I work part time in the evenings mostly but have lots of paperwork to sort for that and in the middle of some coursework that I just can't do with my 5 yr old around. I'm also itching to buy a poly gel nails kit and start that the first few days she's back at school.

DancingQueen2018 · 21/08/2021 21:42

DH will be back at work in London for the first time in 16 months the first 2 days of school. I plan to come home and spend both days in bed reading revelling in the silence! I will undoubtedly also garden, and tidy up but the silence 😁😁😁

beigebrownblue · 21/08/2021 21:44

You deserve it.
I'm sleeping too.
However I'm also going to try to get my health back into shape.
Have suffered from depression etc due to home schooling, not being able to get out so much in Covid, bereavement etc.

Would be happy with the reduction in washing up when they go back and will get my yoga mat out.

Once again, well done you.

Miseryl · 21/08/2021 21:46

I have enjoyed the summer holidays (except for having to isolate during part of it) but we did get a holiday abroad and I'm not a stay at home mum! I find it easier than when they are at school- it's a more leisurely pace of life with fewer demands on us.

Rainallnight · 21/08/2021 21:55

Clear out toys and clothes.
Various bits of admin that have been piling up
Sort out a load of stuff to do with my parents’ probate.
Decide on and order my mum’s headstone.

Really get on top of some charity stuff I’ve been doing.
Keep an eye out for jobs/decide what I want to do with rest of life.

My mind tends to gravitate towards tasks but in truth I desperately need to do a bit of what the young people call self care. Lockdown, bereavement etc have left me quite depressed, a bit overweight etc and I do need to factor in exercise, healthy meal planning and probably some therapy Confused

MyDcAreMarvel · 21/08/2021 22:00

Enjoy spending time with my own children at parks, museums etc once other people’s children are back in school. Maybe go away for a few days late September when prices are much cheaper.

tiredanddangerous · 21/08/2021 22:01

I was a sahm for 12 years. I miss it Envy

Hellotoallmyfans · 21/08/2021 22:02

Il be sorting out the disaster that is our house for the first week probably! Then il start trying to do some exercise again and get rid of the half a stone I've put on over summer!

Yubaba · 21/08/2021 22:08

I’m in work and the DC all go back on different days the primary school go back on Wednesday and the high school on Friday, so I’ve booked a day off the week after and I’m doing sod all, I’m going to sit on the sofa for 6 hours, drink tea and eat biscuits all day. I can’t bloody wait!
I was a SAHM for 8 years and I really miss it some times and going back after the holidays is definitely one of those times Grin

The OP's question isn't relevant to you though is it? It asked if you are a SAHM, what will you do the first week they are back at school, when you clearly home ed not send them to school.
Twilightstarbright · 21/08/2021 22:16

@nc8765 DH is similar but I can’t access stuff in the study when he’s working and I can’t do anything noisy like hoovering when he’s working as he’s pretty much on constant calls.

I’m going to find a yoga class to go to.

ForCluckSake · 21/08/2021 22:16

I have been dreaming of this already.....

Sitting with my chickens in the garden with a pot of tea..... Also hitting the charity shops without coming out with plastic shite.

katienana · 21/08/2021 22:17

Day 1 I'm going to hail a load of stuff down from the loft and take to the charity shop, then have a really nice lunch without having to make sandwiches for anyone else. Watch a film while I eat lunch.
Day 2 get quotes for jobs that need doing round the house and get supplies for bits I can do myself.
Day 3 sort out my tubs for Autumn.
Day 4 go to home bargains or dunelm or bm for a mooch!
Day 5 probably get my hair done!

user64325 · 21/08/2021 22:18

I've been a parent for 16 years but this September my youngest starts reception and I've recently quit my part time job and it will be the first time I have ever experienced a full week of all children at school and me at home. I plan to look for a school hours job (one can dream) soon, but want to take about a month at least first to get some jobs done on the house, lots of painting, clearing out the garage, selling some furniture, hanging pictures, etc. I've written a list on my phone, and hadn't actually put anything that isn't DIY on there so will now go and add some ideas from here including a day of charity shopping, visiting my mum child free for the first time in 16 years, haircut, eyebrow shaping, bike ride, join a gym (maybe).

Alicesweewonders · 21/08/2021 22:19

I have a 2 year old & a 6 month old. I worked from home through lockdown with a toddler & a bump.

Loving reading all of this & very jealous as I'm a long way off them going to school, but this is like dirty talk to me. Sigh

Bbq1 · 21/08/2021 22:48

How has everyone got time for all these activities? As a, sahm, aren't you looking after your dc's etc - or are these people planning activities mums to school age dc?

TheChosenTwo · 21/08/2021 22:57

Omg I miss being a SAHM when I read threads like this Grin
It was such a lovely stage in my life (although I was more than ready to go back to work after 12 years of being home with the dc!), I have such lovely memories of it.
Enjoy your first day of peace guys, it’s golden!

myhumps123 · 21/08/2021 23:03

Gym or a yoga class. Not been to one in years.

mafted · 21/08/2021 23:42

First full week back I'm going for a pedicure followed by lunch with friends, then we have a tradition of bowling and dinner after school,
I've got a shopping trip planned with DD for back to university bits and bobs,
An escape room and lunch with DD and DS1,
Big clear out of the playroom ready for redecorating,
Hair cut and a lunch with DH on Friday.
I love the first couple of weeks of the new term but then the monotony of the routine sets in and I can't wait for the next holiday.

NautaOcts · 21/08/2021 23:48

I’m trying to sit on my hands and not post but it’s not working!
I shouldn’t have read this
Am so lucky to have a term time contract but have found these summer holidays really tough and will be going back to work as soon as they return, anything but refreshed with no option of taking a days leave here and there.

NautaOcts · 21/08/2021 23:48

So am extremely envious of you all
