School Uniforms?

I'm wondering how many school uniforms do most people buy?

My children have three sets of uniform and I do the uniform washes on Wednesdays and Fridays. After watching a few videos on YouTube looking for ideas on school uniform organisation, I've noticed everyone else seemed to have a set of uniform for each day. Is that the usual thing?

I have always bought 5 white shirts, 5 pairs of trousers, and usually 2 jumpers for my son. I like to know there's enough uniform to last the week! When he was younger/ smaller he could sometimes wear the same pair of trousers or shirt more than once, if they weren't muddy, but now he's a huge teen it's actually even more vital to have one for each day because he uses deodorant etc and you can't rewear as a teen like you could as a small child. I hate doing laundry mid week (I'm a teacher so always have work in the evenings) so it works for me to have a set for each day.

I have enough shirts/socks for the week and then 3 trousers/jumpers

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/08/2021 10:52

I usually have 4 sets of everything. He can get away with wearing most things for 2 days in a row unless he gets them dirty (junior school).

In reception, I started with three sets of full uniform, but found that DC1 was coming home grubby everyday. So, I ended up buying enough uniform so they had a clean set every day.

From years 1-6, they have a clean shirt for every day, 2-3 skirts/trousers and 2 jumpers/cardigans.

I wash uniform once a week, so I like to have enough to see the week through.

However, when they go into summer uniform (gingham dress for girls and polo top for boys), I only have two sets which get washed so they have a clean set every day. These don't need ironing and dry quickly so I don't mind putting them on mid week. Plus I'm not going to buy 5 sets of uniform that will be worn for 12 weeks, do I make do with 2.

I think the key for us is that both me and OH work full time mostly out of the house, so it can be difficult to keep on top of laundry etc during the week.

Forestdweller11 · 21/08/2021 11:14

now at secondary but have done this since reception: 5 shirts, 2 jumpers, two skirts/bottoms. Don't iron anything.

manhattenrain · 21/08/2021 11:14

Interesting! I think I might get get one for each day then and give myself the Wednesday night off of laundry!Grin

Not worth the hassle of washing midweek, if they forget to tell you, lose items, nothing dry or ironed!

Extra just takes they pressure off yourself.

Got to be with it for an extra £20

countrytown · 21/08/2021 11:19

I buy 5 of everything, less hassle

Orangedaisy · 21/08/2021 11:20

Private school, crazy expensive uniform. We’re going to see how we do with 2 sets each (2 DDs). Unless incredibly dirty they won’t have a clean set every day.

countrytown · 21/08/2021 11:20

And then for things like t-shirt's I have probably more like 10 so if I miss a wash not the end of the world.

kaleidoscopeheartless · 21/08/2021 11:21

Mine have clean uniform everyday but I do a wash mid week for the rest of the week.

Quornflakegirl · 21/08/2021 11:24

Mine have 3 shirts, 1 skirt, 1 pair trousers and 2 cardigans. They’ve always had this amount since Reception and it’s been enough.

Curlymam88 · 21/08/2021 11:30

5 polo tops, 2 skirts, 4 cardigans. One of her school days she wears p.e uniform joggers etc to school so more or less enough uniform to last the week apart from the skirts.

TheChosenTwo · 21/08/2021 11:32

Ds has 6 trousers and T-shirt’s (they all
Came in packs of 2 so we have a spare!) and 3 sweatshirts. He plays football so gets filthy most days.
Dds are older, they always had 2 skirts/trousers and 5 T-shirt’s and 2 sweatshirts at primary.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/08/2021 11:36

DD has 6 white shirts, 2 skirts and a cardigan. Both the skirts and the cardi dry quickly, so we could do an emergency wash if they were dirty, and they'd be ready the next day.

DS had 3 polo shirts, 2 jumpers and 4 pairs of trousers in infant school. He's going up to juniors in Sept and will have 5 shirts, 4 pairs of trousers and a jumper. Again, the jumper will dry quickly, so can have can have an emergency wash if needed.

Comedycook · 21/08/2021 11:38

I have three days worth...I'm a sahm though and can wash throughout the week. If I worked full time, I'd do what my friend does and have five sets.

countrytown · 21/08/2021 11:38

If we didn't have at least 4 jumpers/cardis I would have to do a midweek wash. My dc always get something on them.

chairfoxlight · 21/08/2021 11:39

5 x trousers / polo shirts / school jumpers - SEN near 10yo who is a mix of filthy and / or sweaty at all times.

We used to do 3 sets and a mid week wash but it's such a faff when you work full time. For a bit of extra money at the start of the year, we've saved us a load of hassle. Do a big wash Friday night and iron / sort on a Sunday.

UserStillatLarge · 21/08/2021 11:39

Reading MN leads me to believe this is school/area specific.

It was very normal at DC's school for infants and lower junior children (i.e. before puberty) to have 3 tops, 2 bottoms and 1 jumper. The extra bottoms were in case of accidents and washing was done once a week at the weekend/Friday night. The jumper was simply sponge cleaned when your child split yogurt down their front day after day.

There are huge number of people that can't afford 5 (or even 6 or more) sets of uniform, so I'm not sure there is a "usual". I'd do whatever you can afford and whatever works for you.

Comedycook · 21/08/2021 11:43

Actually last term my ds only had two school shirts but it worked out fine as he'd wear them on Monday/Tuesday then on Wednesday he'd have pe and would go to school in his pe kit so I'd wash them then and he'd wear them again on Thursday/Friday.

Marmite27 · 21/08/2021 11:45

Ours went in PE kit twice a week last year and that will continue this year.

So 3 full sets of uniform and 2 full sets of PE kit - most of which came in a 2 pack anyway.

FelicityPike · 21/08/2021 11:47

5 polos, 2 skirts, 2 pinafores, 5 pairs of socks, 2 cardigans. Clean uniform every morning.

ChocolateRiver · 21/08/2021 11:55

I’ve got one for every day too. Plus an extra pair of shorts for ds (came in packs of 2) and an extra 2 polos each because they came in a pack of 7. Were busy with work and clubs through the week so I don’t want the hassle of having to wash and iron uniform midweek.

SunshineCake · 21/08/2021 11:57

Why do you need to do what anyone else does ?

We have done the five sets of everything with three kids then as they got bigger, uniforms got a lot more expensive, I was more in a routine and loads of other stuff relevant to me, I just had 3-7 of certain things.

pinkcattydude · 21/08/2021 11:59

Currently only have 3 trousers but hoping that 2 days a week it will be pe kit - yet to find out, if not I’ll get 2 more trousers. So much easier than Wednesday night laundry
