£35 to fill up one hole in tooth. Family friends daughter has 3 holes and they have said she will need to pay for each. Its private. Is this standard? Found it expensive?

£35 is cheap! I need 2 fillings and they'll be £83 each next month

Kitkat05 · 20/08/2021 14:58

Oh thank you @Justonedayatatime11 I thought there would be one cost for the whole treatment

I had a check up with my dentist earlier this year after a 2 year gap - covid, and the dentist surgery was taken over.

I needed 3 fillings and was told it was £65 each. When i queried the price I was told it would be as a private patient. When I explained that I was NHS I was told they were prioritising children and those on benefits for NHS treatment and I would have to pay as a private patient and they didn't have time to treat me as an NHS patient.

When I said that I would move to another surgery, they miraculously found a slot for me to be treated as an NHS patient. I had the NHS treatment then changed surgery.

That's cheap, i'm sure the last time I paid for one (and it's a few years ago now) it was more like £70-80.

Returnoftheowl · 20/08/2021 16:34

I've got to have a filling on one of my back teeth, which will be £200 as a private patient

MrsDThomas · 20/08/2021 17:27

I pay £24 monthly. Like a Denplan but different name. Im private. Well worth it. Speak to the reception.

ArsenicNLace · 20/08/2021 17:34

I'm having one filling in a couple of weeks and been quoted £217!!!

Anjo2011 · 20/08/2021 17:48

Yep, sounds cheap. They normally charge on size of the filling at my dentist. All dentist treatment is expensive, but worth it so you don’t end up with toothache.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 20/08/2021 17:50

I pay monthly, which entitles me to two check ups and two hygienist appointments per year. Last year, I had to change dental surgery from an NHS one, where I was a private patient, to a wholly private practice, because the first was shut from March 2020 until earlier this year.

I had an extraction and two crowns -£1600.

PurpleDaisies · 20/08/2021 17:52

Very cheap.
Why would it be a three for one deal? It’s three times as much time and you still pay for the materials used.

LynetteScavo · 20/08/2021 18:11

I think it's about £60 for an NHS filling.

I have and NHS dentist and insurance for that. It hasn't been worth it over the last 18 months as I missed three check ups because of lockdown.

StarttoFinish · 20/08/2021 18:15

That sounds really cheap to me too.

It always puzzles me that if I break a wrist the NHS fixes it for free but if I break a tooth it's going to cost ££££. Brought home recently by the fact that DSs, both working FT for close to mininum wage, now have to pay for dentistry. A trip to the dentist can easily be a week's pay. They're fortunate in that they have no other real expenses, but for some people it must just be out of the question Sad

idontlikealdi · 20/08/2021 18:53

Very cheap.

Unfashionable · 20/08/2021 18:58

Have you ever taken your dog to the vets? Or had your car fixed? Or had hair & beauty treatments? Or had private dental treatment?

If so, you should realise that NHS dental treatment is a complete bargain, and is one of the things it does well. Clinical treatment is affordable and cosmetic treatment is available for those who want it and are prepared to pay for it.

20viona · 20/08/2021 19:07

You're out of touch that's super cheap.

angstridden2 · 20/08/2021 19:16

I do worry that we are getting to the stage with Dentistry that only the reasonably well off and the very poor will be able to afford regular dentist treatment. If you’re earning well it obviously doesn’t matter what it costs and if you’re on certain benefits NHS dentistry is free. I suspect that a worrking mum on a not great wage may have to choose between shoes for children and a filling.Added to this there are increasingly few NHS dentists; certainly in my town no NHS dentist is taking new patients.

LynetteScavo · 20/08/2021 19:33

@Unfashionable and if you've had private medical treatment you'll realise NHS treatment is very cheap (free).

Owning a dog/car/having a haircut is a choice. Having dental treatment really isn't if your in pain.

I think we're already at the point where people on a lowish wage struggle to pay for dental NHS care. An NHS crown is nearly £300 which is a lot of money for many people, especially if they haven't budgeted for it.

I had a check up recently which I could afford, but didn't think I needed. The dentist picked up a potential problem and has made a referral. If I was struggling to pay for school uniform, why would I go to a check upon thought was unnecessary?

wendz86 · 20/08/2021 19:46

It’s £65 for an nhs filling I think so £35 sounds cheap .

Yes I had one recently. No NHS dentists in my city. 185 for one filling. It is shocking that dentistry is now the preserve of the more well off. Going backwards.
