anybody know how much the fine is/ how many points I'll get? I'm 53, never had one in 30 years of driving....idiot.

How much over the limit and what was the limi?

Are you able to do a speed awareness course? That will probably mean no penalty points.

The details should be on the notice.

LG93 · 20/08/2021 12:15

What speed were you going and what was the speed limit? Is it a community speedwatch one or a summons or fixed penalty/notice of prosecution?

silvercurls · 20/08/2021 12:19

it was a variable speed camera. 30mph limit, I was doing 36.
it was a notice of prosecution asking me to confirm it was me driving.

I think I mean an average speed camera?

It'll be a choice between a fine of £100 and three points in your licence, or doing a speeding awareness course and avoiding the points (and not having to inform your insurer). That also costs about £100!

saraclara · 20/08/2021 12:23

You should be able to do a speed awareness course.
I got my first and only ticket a few years ago and was doing that speed in a 30. I did the course, so no points and no effect on my insurance.

Howshouldibehave · 20/08/2021 12:23

Grrrr, not a nice letter to get!

DH had this a few years back-you have to confirm it was/wasn’t you and then a few weeks later get another letter giving you options of what you can do. He chose the speed awareness course rather than the three points-it was expensive (£100 rings a bell?) and needed a day off work to do it, but it has actually been really useful and he has driven extremely carefully since. He felt a total idiot for speeding so it was a good wake up call.

Pissoi · 20/08/2021 12:23

You can do a speed awareness course at that speed, costs £90 here for a 2.5hr online course and no points

Pissoi · 20/08/2021 12:24

The fine is a percentage of your weekly wage that increases in garidents dependent on the degree of speeding - take the course!

saraclara · 20/08/2021 12:25

I found the course good. And since then I've used a free TomTom speed app so that I don't make that careless mistake again.

Howshouldibehave · 20/08/2021 12:25

The fine is a percentage of your weekly wage

I didn’t know that! How do they know how much you earn-nobody ever asked DH that?

titchy · 20/08/2021 12:25

Yeah do the course! I had points and my premiums were extortionate for five years - even more than insuring my then teenagers Shock

Apeirogon · 20/08/2021 12:26

Definitely take the course. If you get points it affects your car insurance, so it ends up costing more than you think. Also as pp says I did find the course quite useful.

silvercurls · 20/08/2021 12:26

thanks everyone.
Hope I can do an online course, no chance of changing shifts for time off to do it. hadn't actually thought it would affect my insurance. Mad at myself.

Mamamamasaurus · 20/08/2021 12:26

You need to confirm hwo was driving, then they send you a letter advising what the fine is. You'll likely be offered a speed awareness course. I had this last year and did it via Zoom / Teams. It meant I could 'shop around' to find the cheapest course (the difference was about a tenner but better in my pocket).

The course and the fine are around the same cost but points on your licence will mean your premium goes up, sometimes considerably, for a few years. This means it's better to take the course option, if given.

FenceSplinters · 20/08/2021 12:27

Is there a link on the letter to book a course instead of getting the points?

silvercurls · 20/08/2021 12:28

off to google Tom Tom speed app....

OP posts:
banisher · 20/08/2021 12:29

I had this, 33 in a 30 zone. Felt awful but the course was actually really useful and has helped me ever since feel confident when people are tailgating.

ImaginaryCat · 20/08/2021 12:31

@Pissoi Where are you that it's a percentage of your wage? Or is it a new thing? I've never encountered that. DH and I have both had speeding notices several years ago (before we were married so completely separate finances) and the fine was exactly the same for both of us, despite very different incomes.

ichundich · 20/08/2021 12:31

The minimum was £60 and 3 points or £100 and a speed awareness course the last time this happened to me (about 4 years ago). If you use Google maps whilst driving it comes up red when you go over the limit.

HPLikecraft · 20/08/2021 12:32

It's only a percentage of income if you go to court; you can avoid this by pleading guilty and then fine is generally £100.

ichundich · 20/08/2021 12:33

@Howshouldibehave

The fine is a percentage of your weekly wage

I didn’t know that! How do they know how much you earn-nobody ever asked DH that?

I think that only applies to very big fines; low fines are a fixed amount.

So no need to buy a Tom Tom really.

No its not.

I'm afraid I've done a speed awareness course and had points. The fines are fixed.

HPLikecraft · 20/08/2021 12:37

Fines are fixed if you accept the notice and guilt; if you contest it and go to court then the fines may be a percentage of income if found guilty.

Best just do the course!
