I’ve left a bin….

In the house for 9 days, partially uncovered and full of chicken, milk cartons, bits of cooked salmon, etc.

What will I find when I return tonight?! Bit worried but didn’t expect to be away this long!

OP posts:

Just dump the bin in the back garden as soon as you get home. It will be easier to deal with it in the fresh air. Flies will fly away and the birds will pick off the maggots.
However, there would have to have been a fly in your house to lay the eggs to get the maggots in the first place, so you may be lucky and not have any.

Chicken and salmon left uncovered? Dear God that will stink and be absolutely crawling. Sorry OP.

Ha agree!
Debetswell · 18/08/2021 10:59

My ds's friend fed the cat everyday whilst his dp's were on holiday. He left the dirty tins on the kitchen window and they were crawling with maggots.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 18/08/2021 11:01

I've had maggots before due to cat food sachets in the bin. I find it focuses the mind for next time. It can be sorted. When you change the bin bag, maybe put kitchen paper with zoflora or similar in the bin outer, and the new bin bag. Other disinfectants are available.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 18/08/2021 11:04

I done this a few years back, My house was absolutely swarming with flies, it was like something out of a horror movie.

magicstar1 · 18/08/2021 11:11

It depends on the temperature too. If it's been warm and there are flies around, you'll probably have maggots or flies. If it's been cooler, you might just have a stinky bin....fingers crossed!

donquixotedelamancha · 18/08/2021 11:26

What will I find when I return tonight?

Do you remember the scene in Star Wars where the heroes are stuck in a trash compactor? I'd keep my eyes out for one of those one eyed snake thingies, they like salmon.

Where do you live?

Our bins wouldn’t be collected if we didn’t recycle the milk cartons and the food waste!

Shallwegoforawalk · 18/08/2021 11:34

Yikes!! Hope you've got a clothes peg for your nose OP! Good luck.

I'm also very wary of those one eyed snake thingies, and the thing they are attached to

@Lassh

ewwwwwwwwwwwwww, why didn't you empty the bin before you went?

It will STINK in your house when you get back VOM!

Yes but be careful of foxes or, depending where you live, scavenging seagulls accessing the bin and spreading the contents....

I've noticed recently that the local foxes have worked out how open the "locked" kitchen waste bins, rip the bags inside and scatter the contents. Not nice. 🤢

LookItsMeAgain · 18/08/2021 11:59

I'd imagine that you'd come back to an awful smell to begin with. Hopefully there shouldn't be too many flies but I wouldn't be surprised.

I remember one day I was walking around a different neighbourhood to the one I live in and I looked up at a bedroom window of one of the houses on the street thinking that I was admiring a very nice roller blind with polka dots all over it. At least that is what it looked like initially. As I walked by, the polka dots were actually flies and they were all over the windows and the blinds and were moving.
Still gives me the creeps when I think back to it.

I'm just guessing but I suspect some sort of sudden emergency as op has said she's had a horrible week and didn't expect to be away so long.

blueberrywaffle · 18/08/2021 12:01

Yeah I agree with PP
At best a really bad smell that'll take a good week to shift end or worst maggots and flies !

Presumably OP forgot. It's hardly likely to be an experiment.

lljkk · 18/08/2021 12:03

Let us know what you find, OP.
At very least the smell will be foul.

feb2022 · 18/08/2021 12:05

I'd deffo be running in with the fly spray in one hand and the air freshener in the other 😅

Raindancer411 · 18/08/2021 12:15

I think you may need to open windows lol

Sunshineandflipflops · 18/08/2021 12:15

My brother went away for a week and luckily my mum went round to do something for him in that time as she said his living room window was covered in flies, like something from a horror movie and she had to go back for 3 days to get rid of them all. This was due to an unemptied bin...

I was thinking that too. Good advice.
IndecentCakes · 18/08/2021 12:16

It's probably got up and walked out by itself by now.
