DH says I 'can't' buy these school shoes for a girl!

Opinions please!

Are these shoes ok for a 5 year old girl (going into Y1) for school?.

They come up listed in the girls section on Clarks. My thinking is they look tidy, practical and not likely to cause wet feet when it inevitably rains this autumn. DD insists on pinafores and tights so this is more of a pain to change than socks if she gets wet feet at school (and she won't tolerate wet feet, she has diagnosed ASD with sensory issues).

DH says they are boys shoes and I can't buy them it's mean. I think they're unisex and anyway they're five years old so surely practicality wins out!

I've looked at all the girly shoes but they're nearly all very low at the front or gappy!

Anyway... thoughts? Am I condemning her to being teased?

They look fine to me.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/08/2021 17:54

Its your DDs opinion that matters. Are they comfortable?

pointythings · 17/08/2021 17:55

Eminently practical and sensible going into autumn/winter. Your DH is an idiot.

Are they comfy? Are they functional? Then no one cares. They're fine.

StarryStarrySocks · 17/08/2021 17:56

They are just shoes. Your DP is odd.

Tittyfilarious81 · 17/08/2021 17:57

Does your daughter like them though at that age it's important that she's happy with them

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 17/08/2021 17:57

Theres been a lot of campaigning the last few years for shoes to be more unisex and appropriate for playing.

FelicityPike · 17/08/2021 17:57

I don’t think they’re necessarily “boys” shoes, but personally I think they’re awfully clumpy for a five year old.

Seawo · 17/08/2021 17:57

That’s funny, I can’t see anything on there that says ‘penis owners only’...

Grin of course they are fine op. And your dad will be very thankful when her other poor friends are in some awful glittery holey things that ensure socks get wet in winter.

starfishmummy · 17/08/2021 17:58

They're fine IMHO.

Seawo · 17/08/2021 17:58

Your dad will probably like them too but I meant ‘dd’ 😁

Neverrains · 17/08/2021 17:58

Does she like them? Mine had strong opinions at that age! If she’s happy with them then they’re absolutely fine.

MoreRainThanAnyYet · 17/08/2021 17:58

He’s a chump, and my son says they’re definitely girls’ shoes, which makes him a junior chump.

DD would prefer to wear much clumpier shoes than that.

SimonJT · 17/08/2021 17:58

If he doesn’t want them what alternative and practical shoes has he suggested?

6fingerkitkat · 17/08/2021 17:58

@FelicityPike

I don’t think they’re necessarily “boys” shoes, but personally I think they’re awfully clumpy for a five year old.

This for sure. There are so many styles that would be less heavy and clumpy but still keep her feet dry.

GintyMcGinty · 17/08/2021 17:59

Perfectly fine.

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 17/08/2021 17:59

The are very heavy looking with a huge heel for a 5 year old. But they are shoes boys and girls feet aren’t different.

toughdaay · 17/08/2021 17:59

I think they're fine for a girl and MUCH better than those impractical gappy things. As a PP has already said though they look quite formal for a 5 yr old. Will they trip on the heel? My DD definitely would have done.

HelloDulling · 17/08/2021 18:00

They look good to me. They boys tend to have the more trainerish ones at our school, these Definitely look suitable for either.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/08/2021 18:01

My only thought when looking at them is that they look so rigid and formal. Do they bend easy? They almost look like what a y10/y11 would wear at secondary

Itsanewdah · 17/08/2021 18:01

I would go for a trainer style instead, these look really clunky!

MistyFrequencies · 17/08/2021 18:01

As sad as it is to say, my 4 year old came home from preschool asking for Sketchers sneakers because apparently 4 year olds know about brands these days and were commenting on her supermarket brand sneakers. So, particularly given she's autistic so may need extra help interpreting what's going on with the other kids, I'd probably try and find out what the norm is for kids at her school and buy those.

idontlikealdi · 17/08/2021 18:01

I dont like those particular shoes but I totally agree with the premise. As soon as DTs feet were big enough they have had lace up DMs for school as they actually keep their feet dry, they don't have to scrunch their feet up to keep them on etc and their school doesn't allow Kickers.

There is no way that my two would have accepted those in Y1 but if she likes them then get them.

Noshowwithoutpunch · 17/08/2021 18:02

My DD even at 5 would probably have refused to wear them and declared them 'boys' however if she likes them then it shouldn't be a problem.
I personally have always allowed dc to choose their own shoes ( within reason).

grecianurn82 · 17/08/2021 18:02

I would buy them for my daughters.
