Anyone had a tooth break during extraction?

SequinsandStiIettos · 16/08/2021 19:45

Evening!
Hoping some of you may have experience/tips.
Was told two weeks ago that a cavity was so close to the nerve, it might not take. I chose to cut out the middle man and have tooth taken out (upper back molar).
I was told today (so not when I initially made the decision) tooth might break during extraction. I gave consent to go ahead.
Tooth broke.
I have long roots allegedly.
I have been left with tooth roots in and iirc the dentist said he had filed a nerve and put some ointment on it, similar to initial deep root canal treatment? He has referred me to an oral surgeon for extraction of the remainder of the tooth.
This referral is now with triage. No idea how long it will take.
Dentist said to call in the next 48 hours if need to 8although no idea what he can actually do if I do?).
I was told there would be soreness following the extraction but I would be in less discomfort than before given most of the bad tooth is gone.
I am in agony.
I have rinsed with saltwater and mouthwash.
I have taken two anadin extra and it's not touching the pain.
I have also been given prophylactic antibiotics.
Tooth and jaw ache currently worse than last week.

Is this the result of essentially what felt like blunt force trauma?
Should I still be this much in pain?
What to do now (single mum, no support so going down to a dental hospital, even if one is open, not much use tonight).
I can next take painkillers at 10pm.

I would appreciate anyone who has been through similar to advise.
Also, I am dreading the surgery. As it is waiting on the referral, any idea what your time scale was? Does the current extraction site have to heal before they go in again or will they just pick up where he left off?

Thanks in advance x Flowers

Anyone?

I’ve had vaguely similar (tooth broke leaving roots behind). It was completely painless.

Be very careful not to overdose on painkillers! Have you access to supermarket- if so Clove oil will (briefly) help the pain.

SequinsandStiIettos · 16/08/2021 20:17

I have resisted the temptation to overdose Saz - it says no more than 8 in 24 hours - am trying to hold out until midnight rather than 10pm but as I said, not touching the pain atm, which leads me to think something is wrong. That said, he did wrestle with it for half an hour so maybe it will abate tomorrow?
No idea if it is a common thing or I was just unlucky.
No idea what nerves (if any) are exposed or not - surely they wouldn't have sent me home if that was the case.
Is Clove oil found in a pharmacy or at Tesco?
I am not up for dragging DC down there but needs must.
Is that something you can apply little and often with no side effects?
Thanks for replying x

Also, where would I apply the clove oil? Desperate not to end up with dry socket or infection (hence the antibiotics) but given the site is bloody and tender, should I be putting anything on it?
Any dentists out there? (sorry, I know you will all have been at work all day) Flowers

Omg, yes this happened to me.

I had to wait MONTHS for hospital app to get it taken out properly.

Keep taking the pain killers and rest up.

give it 24-48 hours and should start to feel better. Long wait for referrals likely but very unlikely to be in pain for long. Do not use neat clove oil in your mouth! It can burn your gums - get some Oragel or similar from pharmacy

Pumpkintopf · 16/08/2021 20:37

Echo all of this -

Were you REALLY REALLY gentle with your rinsing? It can be very easy to loose the clot and expose the bone / nerve. In which case you need to see the dentist again: call the out of hours number - he can pack / dress it to help. The pain I supposed to be worse than childbirth, I have heard.

Looking back at your original post - should be too soon for infection: I am guessing it is exposed nerve.

Do not prod it or rinse / swish it. Phone the out of hours and get scene.

Why are you taking Anadin? Has it been medically suggested that you take it for some reason (and not paracetamol or ibuprofen)? I would take alternating doses of paracetamol and ibuprofen (you can do that - so you are taking “something” every 2/3 hours): works well. I would avoid Anadin, unless expressly told to take it: it is a blood thinner.

I had an extraction and dry socket. Was awful but the dentist packed it with something that smelt dreadful but immediately sorted the pain. The small bits of root that were left did eventually work themselves to the surface naturally months later. While I was waiting to see the dentist I alternated paracetamol and ibuprofen every two hours.

chilliplant634 · 16/08/2021 20:41

Yes, I would expect that you would be in pain OP after what you have gone though. This hasn't happened to me, but I have unfortunately done this to others :( I'm a dentist and yes sometimes teeth are really difficult and they do snap off. Especially when they are heavily decayed or filled and basically completely hollow and brittle. I try to be really conservative in estimating whether I can get it out or not. If I think it could end up being really difficult I try and refer to the oral surgeon from the beginning, to avoid the patient having to go through a failed extraction.

I suspect the pain/bruising will settle after a few days. In my experience referrals for extraction or retained roots can take a while, but it will depend on the area where you live. If you are still in severe pain after 2 days go back to your dentist. Perhaps he may be able to redress the roots if the gum hasn't healed over already.

cheeseychovolate · 16/08/2021 20:41

My tooth broke during extraction. The roots remained for about 4 years. I started to get pain on and off and one of the roots has worked its way up to my gum and so the dentist removed it, I got dry socket and the dentist treated me for that. The other root remains and isn't bothering me at all.

SequinsandStiIettos · 16/08/2021 20:44

Thank you for replies. I have only rinsed 3 hours after the extraction because I was in so much pain. Anadin extra was all I had in the house - it's aspirin/paracetomol/caffeine combi but I can go and get separate ibu and paracetomol if you think I will be better off. So if the roots are still there and the cavity was near the nerve, what are the chances of an exposed nerve now or infected roots...the dentist would have let me know surely?
It is akin to childbirth yes and broken wrists - the problem is that the pain is unrelenting not in waves.

MauveMavis · 16/08/2021 20:45

Dental anaesthetist - cannot comment on dental side of things.

Can help with analgesia.

I think anadin extra is 300mg Aspirin/ 200mg Paracetamol/ 45mg Caffeine.

Check the packet though to see what is in yours.

I would suggest (assuming you can take medicines like Ibuprofen)
1g Paracetamol every 6 hours (max 4 doses/ 24 hrs)
400mg Ibuprofen every 6hrs (max 4 doses/ 24hrs)

You need to wait 6hrs after your anadin before you have another dose of Paracetamol/ Ibuprofen as you don't want to overdose though.

If the above regime doesn't work (and it's pretty good if taken regularly) you can buy Paracetamol with codeine at the chemist to substitute in.

Dental pain is a really common cause of Paracetamol overdose. Don't be a statistic.

SequinsandStiIettos · 16/08/2021 20:54

I'm in Manchester chilli. My dentist is a nice man. I just wished I had known before deciding on an extraction there was a chance it could break. That said, I am doubtful he could have filled it successfully.
Any idea what is meant by initial deep root canal? Has he dressed the roots in ointment do you think? Am I able to put oragel directly onto the area if I can get hold of some or do I just stay away from the site entirely?
Really appreciate the responses all of you - misery loves company Grin I am such a wimp but it just felt brutal today, like something out the middle ages. Nothing against my dentist, he's a lovely bloke but I just feel like such an eejit. I had a wisdom tooth taken out two decades ago and that dentist marvelled at how long the roots were but I forgot. Isn't that something you'd know from x-rays anyway?

Sorry mavis, just checking...so I can take paracetomol and ibu together just not until midnight. Then 6am. 12pm. That's the 4 doses.
Can I then start a 'new' 24 hours at 6pm tomorrow? And how long can one take painkillers for?
Thanks again.

You are not awimp!

It's painful.

Childbirth is less painful than what you're going through right now.

I've just remembered I went on meal shakes for a while as I couldn't eat but wanted to if that makes sense. X

If you’re in that much pain, alternate ibuprofen with cocodamol (paracetamol and codeine). And ring the dentist tomorrow about pain relief.

SparklingLime · 16/08/2021 21:07

If you can still get to a pharmacy the cocodamol may help you sleep.

SequinsandStiIettos · 16/08/2021 21:08

I cannot have paracetomol until midnight - am I allowed to have any ibuprofen now if I have had anadin at 6pm?
I will put my anadin back in the cupboard. Had forgotten aspirin was a blood-thinner. It's just what I had in.
(I hadn't bought ibu in ages as originally the French had said not to use for covid 19 symptoms but iirc our govt went back on that anyway).
Okay, have a plan. Off to the shops. Thanks again x

Oh bless you . I had a wisdom tooth purposely broken to have it extracted as one root was pointing one way and the other had a mind of it own. I was traumatised, I remember the shivers and adrenaline. I took plenty of ibuprofen and paracetamol for about a week after it. Whenever i could i was doped up on them. Try a hot water bottle (with a cover obviously) on your face. It was like a warm hug,

SequinsandStiIettos · 17/08/2021 00:04

In case anyone is still up. I have just taken 2 paracetomol and 2 ibubrofen. Am I allowed to use adult bonjela on top?
Thank you.
I intend going back at 8.30am when practise opens as the pain is excruciating. It cannot be normal at this point. The failed extraction took place nine hours ago.
