Anyone had a tooth break during extraction?

Evening!
Hoping some of you may have experience/tips.
Was told two weeks ago that a cavity was so close to the nerve, it might not take. I chose to cut out the middle man and have tooth taken out (upper back molar).
I was told today (so not when I initially made the decision) tooth might break during extraction. I gave consent to go ahead.
Tooth broke.
I have long roots allegedly.
I have been left with tooth roots in and iirc the dentist said he had filed a nerve and put some ointment on it, similar to initial deep root canal treatment? He has referred me to an oral surgeon for extraction of the remainder of the tooth.
This referral is now with triage. No idea how long it will take.
Dentist said to call in the next 48 hours if need to 8although no idea what he can actually do if I do?).
I was told there would be soreness following the extraction but I would be in less discomfort than before given most of the bad tooth is gone.
I am in agony.
I have rinsed with saltwater and mouthwash.
I have taken two anadin extra and it's not touching the pain.
I have also been given prophylactic antibiotics.
Tooth and jaw ache currently worse than last week.

Is this the result of essentially what felt like blunt force trauma?
Should I still be this much in pain?
What to do now (single mum, no support so going down to a dental hospital, even if one is open, not much use tonight).
I can next take painkillers at 10pm.

I would appreciate anyone who has been through similar to advise.
Also, I am dreading the surgery. As it is waiting on the referral, any idea what your time scale was? Does the current extraction site have to heal before they go in again or will they just pick up where he left off?

Thanks in advance x Flowers

I would definitely use bonjela too x

my dentist advised the salt water rinses after about 6 hours after the extraction....useless info but if i need dental work and am in Spain, i do it over there as their dentists seem to be able to do all types of extractions / treatments and no referrals to others.

The adult bonjela has aspirin in it? So unsure whether I can have it as well as the ibu. I don't have the children's one.

Just posting solidarity . I had a tooth extracted today after an attempted root canal. I'm in lots of pain but not on the scale that you are. I hope you feel better soon Thanks

OP, is your dentist fairly young? If so perhaps they are not very experienced/confident with extractions.

My brilliant dentist had to sort out a botched extraction for me, which a young dentist had botched. The tooth had been heavily filled previously, then a piece suddenly broke off and I was in pain. My dentist was on holiday so his young colleague attempted to extract it, but couldn't get the root out, despite cutting my gum open and working on it for an hour! A few weeks later I saw my own dentist and explained I wasn't happy that I still had a bit of tooth/root sticking up through the gum, which was impossible to brush or eat on, but might get decayed. He was horrified when I described the method the other dentist used, then said he could get it out in minutes. I was sceptical but he said it was all about experience and technique, he numbed my gum with a jab then went for it. He got it out in less than a minute! Then he explained that many young dentists lack experience with extractions, partly due to the improvement in dental care over the years, which means people are keeping their teeth longer. So, if your teeth are at the stage where more extractions might be needed soon, I would recommend that you change dentists to find one confident and competent enough to handle extractions.

It's fine to use alongside paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Hen2018 · 17/08/2021 00:55

That sounds horrendous.

They left a pointed bit of root behind when they extracted one of my molars. It’s been in there hiding for 30 years with no problems, thank goodness.

When my child smashed his teeth in a road accident, we managed to get hold of this from a pharmacy:

He is young, yes urban He has a lovely manner (I am a sucker for anyone who calls me sweetie for half an hour, probably due to Tardis) but yes, maybe he hasn't had to do many. That said, the practise is in a fairly deprived area so I really don't know.

Ah, I see. Perhaps ask around and find a more experienced dentist. They are worth their weight in gold, if you have teeth that are less than perfect. (For those dental virgins who've never had a filling, let alone an extraction, it's very different. One day though, most people need a dentist who can handle more than a quick check up and clean.)

toooothacheee · 17/08/2021 07:03

I second anbesol, it works much better than bonjela as it's a liquid not a gel it goes on easier.
It's only available from pharmacy counters not the store shelves.

NommyChompers · 18/08/2021 21:53

Not all young dentists are bad at extractions - in my practice the youngest is by far the best at oral surgery! And the oldies ask them for help all the time!

Pumpkintopf · 19/08/2021 00:04

@SequinsandStiIettos how are you doing? Hope you got sorted?

SequinsandStiIettos · 19/08/2021 04:32

Still self-medicating pumpkin but thanks for asking. Sorry, I updated on jollys parallel toothache thread - she's in as bad a way as me.
I am having my gum cut and the roots drilled out this Friday. Hurrah.
But in a shock twist, I rang the dentist yesterday to see if he could alleviate the pain in any way (as my referral was originally next week) only to be told sadly, it was my dentist's last day and now I don't have one until they get a replacement!!!
So the lovely, young, handsome sweetie dentist has done a runner to private practice and didn't tell me! Shock Fortunately, I struck lucky later yesterday and got a cancellation, thank God, for the referral to the surgeon. Crossing fingers I get through it. Envy

Yikes!!!! That is quite the (unwelcome) twist - poor you, hope Friday sorts it!
