If someone was buying you a gift for £10, what would you want?

It's my birthday soon, and I need to give the younger family members gift ideas. I have no clue at all what to suggest. I don't want alcohol.

Or nail polish

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 14/08/2021 22:33

I don’t think it is tokenism.. all the things on my list are little treats that I’d genuinely enjoy.

fringeneedsatrim · 14/08/2021 22:34

@CornishPastyDownUnder I'm glad that £10 is pointless to you but having a budget is not tokenism.

BrownOwlknowsbest · 14/08/2021 22:37

Books
Dark chocolate
Really good honey, Oxfam used to do a rainforest one that was truly delicious.

Chattercino · 14/08/2021 22:41

A green houseplant

ShoppingBasket · 14/08/2021 22:42

I don't agree with it being tokenism. You can get gifts that are quite thoughtful for under £10. It also teaches them about giving and choosing something for the receiver. I think it's more about appreciation.
I'd be quite happy with a lot of these things from anyone. Perhaps, I'm just easily pleased.

whattodo2019 · 14/08/2021 22:43

Book
Bubble bath

robotcollision · 14/08/2021 22:43

Fresh flowers
Pot plants
A pretty mug
New paperback novel by a favourite author
Lamy fountain pen (some are £10)
Pretty notebook
Good socks (Waitrose pure wool are about £9)
Something related to a hobby - for me things like handweights, exercise gloves, hiking socks, a cheap fleece or sports vest - anything to do with favourite exercise is a massive hit

ImFree2doasiwant · 14/08/2021 22:47

@CornishPastyDownUnder it's not tokenism. Hmm We, as a family, like to buy gifts for each other, for birthdays. We do not have loads of money. My children in particular, love giving presents to others.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I really don't have much money, and do struggle to think of things for myself. I've got a nice list now and look forward to seeing what they choose for me.

@ShoppingBasket thank you, that's exactly it.

I agree. £10 to £15 is my normal budget per adult (close family). Sometimes we pool money for something bigger, but £10 is enough to buy something that is appreciated.

ShoppingBasket · 14/08/2021 22:54

@ImFree2doasiwant I hope you get some lovely things Smile it's nice that they want to buy something. I'm like you, I never buy for myself.

iwishiwasonhol · 14/08/2021 23:02

merryhouse · 14/08/2021 23:05

sweeties

Body Shop vitamin C moisturiser

TrampolineForMrKite · 14/08/2021 23:08

I think Gareth Keenan covered this.

merryhouse · 14/08/2021 23:10

@CornishPastyDownUnder the point is buying gifts for each other. So yes, I suppose it is "tokenism". The point is the same whether you spend 10p or £100, and is completely ruined if everyone puts their own money back in their own pocket.

(Actually, £10 would buy quite a nice bottle of wine in my circles. But that's not actually relevant.)

Starlitexpress · 14/08/2021 23:11

Wild flower bomb or rituals hand cream.

BeaBeaBuzz · 14/08/2021 23:33

Marks & Spencer’s flaked chocolate truffles. 2 boxes- £8

IncyWincyGrownUp · 15/08/2021 00:06

I’m not good at receiving gifts, ASD thing, but if I had £10 to get myself something I think I would buy a book and some coffee to drink while reading it.

Alternatively, a couple of metres of cheerful cotton to sew with, as I’ve rediscovered how much I enjoy it.

mellicauli · 15/08/2021 00:35

A copy of The Plot and a slab of Creme Brûlée Kernow Chocolate

Miniature rose in a basket from M&S

Cath Waters ceramic coaster

BunnyBerries · 15/08/2021 00:36

You could get a nice ikebana kenzan (Japanese flower arranging metal fixing tool) for that! You can be so creative with it using literally whatever you have in the garden, shrubs, flowers, anything.

NothingEverChangesButTheShoes · 15/08/2021 00:41

Just the £10 note, wrapped beautifully. I would be ecstatic if you did that. I would write you a lovely letter detailing what I bought with it or put it towards. Likely a tattoo or a book or coffee and cake.

NothingEverChangesButTheShoes · 15/08/2021 00:42

@IncyWincyGrownUp Great minds think alike. It is the best gift.

SmokedPaprikaHotChilliPowder · 15/08/2021 00:45

If I don't know what to suggest I always say a Waterstones voucher.
