WTF is happening in Afghanistan?

Kabul will fall soon, and the Taliban will control the whole country.

The rights of women and girls will go back to the dark ages, along with rights for any other liberal view/s. In a few years, the UN will declare a humanitarian crisis and then what, we're back to square one?

The US is highly unlikely to commit to troops, same goes for us here in the UK. What about China? Surely a stable Middle East is in their best interest? Russia? The other 'stan nations??

I understand there are Afghans that do prefer life under the Taliban, but surely that's a small minority group?

I'm not a foreign affairs expert so would really like some help on this one!

Do you really think the government thinks it "acceptable" ?“

I think certain members of the Government don’t give a shiny shit about the Afghan citizens who risked their lives for decades. They care about the optics, though.

This could have been anticipated and expedited months ago. The will just wasn’t there.

Dominic Raab “with hindsight” wouldn’t have gone on holiday as the Taliban were advancing. What a hero. He claims no-one could have anticipated the speed with which their power grab happened. I smell BS. It was bloody obvious to the average Jo/Joe on the street as soon as Biden made his announcement. Raab and his colleagues are privy to the most up to date intelligence: of course they knew this outcome was a possibility. Their error was in assuming that the public wouldn’t be terribly interested. Big mistake, huge.

They've been urging people to leave since April. As I said, they couldn't force them to go. Is that what you think should have happened? How?

Would these be the same people whose paperwork has not been processed, despite applying months ago? Countless examples on various outlets.

Yes, there were representations made in May about those whose case was rejected - led to an expansion of the scheme

And no, we dont know the extent of any overlap between those whose earlier visa applications were rejected and those who are seeking resettlement now.

Not every applicant presenting now is being accepted, just as not every one earlier.

I don't know much about how individuals are assessed - how is it done, is it being done properly? And if it should be different, then what should it have been?
