Can I salvage my beautiful black leather bag?

I'm absolutely gutted. My lovely black leather whistles bag is ruined. My sons fruit pouch exploded in my bag and so I put it in the washer 🙈
Now it's come out with white streaks and it's very dull and looks horrible. It's only about 3 months old. I'm gutted.
Can I savage it anyhow?

Shoe polish? Leather cream for sofas?

Sorry, I know how annoying it is to ruin something you love.

Try shoe cream. It softens and recolours. I had a green radley that was looking shabby, used shoe cream in a close colour and it really improved colour and texture.

BalloonSlayer · 12/08/2021 15:32

I have found suede dye to be good. Not leather dye, that's just sort of paint. Suede dye sinks in.

Hopdathelf · 12/08/2021 15:58

You put it in the washing machine?

RuleOfCat · 12/08/2021 16:00

I think you were right first time about savaging it Wink. That's a very savaged bag.

TheCrowFromBelow · 12/08/2021 16:22

Fiebings oil leather dye is very good and transformed a croc effect leather bag of mine which was really tired and scuffed.
Worth a go!

SquirryTheSquirrel · 12/08/2021 16:24

Try a specialist bag polish.

Killahangilion · 12/08/2021 16:26

What????
Why did you put a Leather bag in the washing machine? I can’t believe anyone would do that, even my DH isn’t that daft.

Are you one of those people that doesn’t hand wash anything?

Surely it would have made more sense to carefully wipe it with a damp cloth?

LubaLuca · 12/08/2021 16:32

Saddle soap to help put the moisture back in, and something with pigment in (like shoe cream as mentioned) to cover parts that have had the colour stripped out of it.

Oddbutnotodd · 12/08/2021 16:34

Sorry but you have probably wrecked the bag by washing it. It’s always best to google something before taking action. Washing it will have removed all the natural oils. You could try saddle soap to soften it again. Try searching “leather bag restoration” and see what comes up.
Alternatively try to find the same bag and throw that one away.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 12/08/2021 16:36

Oh dear, the washing machine wasn’t the best idea. Try Wizz leather cleaner from the pound shop, it has an oil in to nourish as well as cleaning the leather.

@Killahangilion Sorry but struggling to find anything even remotely helpful in your rude comments 🙄

Their is a Facebook page that rescues leather bags, seem to fix even those that are really far gone I'm sure they could help your poor bag.

Nicolastuffedone · 12/08/2021 17:25

The washing machine?? 😲

MistySkiesAfterRain · 12/08/2021 17:27

I would moisturise with a nice leather cream then look at a black leather dye. It will be fine.

Sorry, didn’t mean to appear rude but I’m genuinely shocked that you did that. It just seems so bizarre.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/08/2021 17:30

Arghhhhhh why would you put it in the washing machine?! ConfusedShock

Maybe handbag cream?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/08/2021 17:31

I don't think @Killahangilion was rude, just astonished anyone would machine wash a leather bag.

urbanbuddha · 12/08/2021 17:35

Mulberry make a leather cream. Maybe try that first followed by a coloured renovating shoe cream.

Badgertadger · 12/08/2021 17:46

Try gently warming it with a hairdryer then rubbing in a leather oil or saddle soap. It'll take a few goes but just keep doing it until it doesn't absorb any more, then polish it with something pigmented, buffing it so that the colour doesn't leach then finish it off with a weather guard product.

dancygnik · 13/08/2021 20:41

@Killahangilion Ah no worries! I'm just annoyed at myself more than anything. I tried to hand wash the inside but it wasn't budging after a day out in the sun with an entire mango fruit pouch swilling around inside and being followed by wasps all day, it seemed like the only resort to machine wash. Desperately wish I hadn't!

Ecco smooth leather daily care cream - transparent.

This stuff is really good. It's for leather shoes but I've used it on so many different leather things like bags, sofa, chair etc.

It's transparent and you squirt a small bit out and rub in circular movements using the sponge attached.

Now I can't say it'll work for your bag for sure but when I've used it, it has taken away marks and brought the leather back to its original state.

I'm in Ireland so I bought it here but maybe the likes of amazon will sell it.

Clarabellawilliamson · 13/08/2021 21:07

Sounds a bit bonkers but I was told to use nivea blue cream for leather- it will soften and put the oil's back, skin is skin...
Shoe polish/ suede colour to bring it back to black. Maybe before the moisturiser?!
