I would like to blame Peppa Pig for this

Our family is from Yorkshire. Our speech is not 'broad' by any means but we do speak with an accent obviously.

My little grandson is 3 and loves 'Peppa Pig''.

Lately, when he's talking he has started saying certain words such as 'faster' in a southern accent. He also refers to 'grass' in a similar tone.
"Where has he got that from" ? people have remarked, and smiled. We have to concede it is 'Peppa Pig' and nothing to do with us or nursery.

I hope it's just a phase :) Perish the thought of him speaking like Grandpa Pig.. That's just going a tad too far

DS sounded American at one point due to Paw Patrol. Some parents from USA have said their children sound British due to Peppa Pig.

DS grew out of it. Although he still sometimes says 'on accident' instead of 'by accident' but hey ho.

I feel your pain op. I have a severe dislike of Peppa pig. I remember when Dd first used the phrase "that's so boring" thanks to that little bugger. Peppa is so rude and entitled I never let Dd watch it after that.

ICantFindTheBuffet · 12/08/2021 15:25

My 5 year old used to say 'carstle' instead of castle due to peppa pig when she was younger. It didnt last though so don't worry Smile Now she just says some words with an American twang thanks to YouTube Grin

I usually have to enjoy Peppa's adventures with him, but I dislike the entitlement of holidays and people owning trains and boats as something perfectly normal.

This week she's been in Australia with some relative who is a marine biologist for goodness' sake.

Also the rubbish regarding the doctor who comes out to every ailment going is unfair.
You don't see them going to A&E do you ?

I could go on.................... and on........

LOL

They also build houses overnight and have a vet fly in a helicopter to turn a tortoise over.. I don't think it's supposed to be taken as a reflection of real life, and I'm sure our children will cope with the differences to their own lives Grin

MyMabel · 13/08/2021 12:42

My niece went through a stage of speaking only in an American accent. Was hilarious. I think she’s outgrow it now; she’s 4!

My dad pronounces pizza ‘Pitt-za’ i joke with him that it sounds too provincial!! Grin

MynahBird · 13/08/2021 13:39

Just wait until they get into Bluey and become little Australians!

Surprisedpikachu · 13/08/2021 13:46

My kids do this sometimes. DH and I are from Yorkshire and we live in the north east now, and yet the DC elongate the ‘a’ sound for those sort of words (barth, grarss, carstle) etc. Not every time, but I’m sure it’s from watching Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly

FrancesFlute · 13/08/2021 13:46

Ah, yes, I love Bluey and DS has started saying 'oh, biscuits!' Smile as an exclamation.

We are also in Yorkshire and I was born here. My 3yo DS does the long vowels but my DH is from down South and speaks like that! My friends find it hilarious. I think he will adjust when he starts school as he'll be around more people with local accents. Very cute though!

CarolinaWeeper · 13/08/2021 13:58

I did do a double take when DS aged 4 said "tempus fugit" the other day. I asked him where he'd got that from and he said Peppa Shock

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 13/08/2021 13:59

Mine says Vacation and hamburger patty and talks about thanksgiving.

We are irish and she got it from Ryan's World 😑

Yep, mine have an odd Brisbane, Disney Texan by Yorkshire hybrid accent. Plus the odd bit of Peppa car-stle and graass.

It’s hilarious to listen to them ask for a drink of ‘wa-der’ in a glaaas at the moment

HelenHywater · 13/08/2021 14:07

My dd was obsessed with Peppa when she was a toddler. She's 9 now and seems to have a solid grasp on reality. She can still remember the bing bong song though .

Plus all my children have my accent and say laff rather than larf despite growing up in the south

Plus they are a family of talking pigs 😂
MilkEyedMender · 13/08/2021 14:39

When my friend's son was little Pingu was his favourite show and instead of taking he decided to make the noises they made on the show to communicate Grin

So I'd say a bit of a Southern accent isn't good bad!

MilkEyedMender · 13/08/2021 14:40

*talking

MilkEyedMender · 13/08/2021 14:40

*also meant to write too instead of good!
my English is appalling

MrsMoastyToasty · 13/08/2021 14:54

My DS started speaking some Spanish that he'd picked up from Dora the Explorer and Handy Manny when he was a toddler. He's now 15 and can't remember a single word.

newnortherner111 · 13/08/2021 15:33

You will have to act quickly OP. Though you did not refer to your home as being in God's Own Country, which you should ensure your grandson is aware of.

My grandson just came out with 'shiver me timbers' when playing in the garden. It's great isn't it !

Peppa deserves to be bacon

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 14/08/2021 02:53

My Ds is 18 but I still ask him if he wants me to call Dr Brown Bear if he's feeling poorly. He does just roll his eyes 🙄

Wolframhart · 14/08/2021 03:03

I miss Peppa and the Octonauts.
Glad to say goodbye to Paw Patrol

The teenager has very different tastes.
