Best holiday you’ve been on with children?

DH has a week off work just before the end of summer break, so we’re going to book a last minute trip. But holidays sometimes feel like hard work with children!

What’s the best holiday you’ve taken with children? (Mine are aged 7 and 5)

My children had been to lots of places so I asked them ( they are adults now) They say Northumberland 🤔 they loved that holiday.
Horse riding on the beach. Castles. Train ride to Scotland. I enjoyed it also .

Butlins. My idea of hell but the kids loved it and still talk about it. They've been to some swanky places but it all comes back to butlins.

Menorca a couple of years ago. It was warm weather but not so hot we were melting all the time. All inclusive hotel which meant neither of us had to think about cooking at all. The hotel had a kids pool with slides and water features that DD1 loved. The hotel had another water park a short walk away that it was connected to and we got in for free which made a nice change to the hotel facilities. The local area was lovely with some nice shops and restaurants if we fancied venturing out.

When mine were that age the week we spent in Cornwall would have been their favourite holiday. They still remember it. A trip to the US a few years later is also a highlight. Then when DS was mid-teens he did a West Coast USA road trip with his dad (3 weeks). That would be his best holiday ever.

Abu Dhabi

Yas Island

Ferrari world, Yas water park and Warner Brothers studio

Abu Dhabi is amazing as a tourist as no one really goes there, so there is no Qing for anything , absolutely perfect for kids.

We have a amazing time when we go and you just walk up to the rides and get straight on.

Another vote for Isle of Wight. Been twice now with the kids and they love it.

A cruise. They keep asking when we can do another one.

South of France:
Castles
Horse riding
Wild swimming
Mini train
Waterpark
Carcassonne
Safari park
Wolf reserve!

We have simple tastes and a small budget!

Cornwall. But not the busy tourist areas as I hate crowds, and driving around hunting for a parking space is tedious. Ours just want to be on the beach all day and we've got a few favourites that we know are usually quiet. So we take a picnic and some beach toys and spend all day there. Also do a few walks on the coastal path and some nice meals out for fresh seafood and there's about it. Very relaxing and the kids love it.

Same. Butlins is paradise for kids. DS prefers going there than abroad.

Lapland was another great one for us.

Butlins.
My eldest is 25 and always says Butlins was the best of all the holidays.
As teens they preferred the trips abroad but primary school aged it was all about Butlins

Mine loved Cwmiar Farm Holidays (loved spending mornings feeding animals and afternoons at Aberporth), and they also enjoyed a week in a static caravan at Middlewood Farm Holiday Park (just enjoyed going for walks, playing on the beach, and making friends at the playground) . These are particular highlights. Lots of other holidays they've enjoyed.

Mallorca. Small all inclusive hotel with its own beach, booked with Jet2. So easy. I took them on my own as DH couldn't get time off.

Every day was breakfast, beach, lunch, beach, snack, beach, shower, dinner, activity (crazy golf or table tennis) then bed. I've never had a more relaxing holiday!

Panickingpavlova · 12/08/2021 09:21

As pp above either self catering beach front apartment in mallorca or

The amazing Dutch theme park efteling, relaxing, beautiful, gorgeous accommodation

imaginethemdragons · 12/08/2021 09:21

So many!!
Tend to be Haven type caravan holidays all over the U.K.
I would second Northumberland or Yorkshire.
North Wales is bloody lovely with loads to do.

Sun holidays have always been a budget hit too for next year.

The list is endless!!

Isle of Wight is brilliant for families. It seems to be set up for that. There’s so many things for families to do of all ages.

South of France is great. Always find it kid friendly.

CurryLover55 · 12/08/2021 09:26

IWantToBreakFree would you message me with your fav beaches please? I live in Cornwall but the local beaches are pretty much all rammed at the mo

SheWhoRemains · 12/08/2021 09:28

Scotland. We did Loch Lomond, Skye, John O Groats, Edinburgh in that order. Mixture of Air BNB and hotels. At John O Groats we had an Air BNB that had seals at the end of the back garden. Visited various castles etc. Kids loved it, aged 7 and 4 at the time.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/08/2021 09:32

The Ikos in Greece (it's a chain, can't remember the name of our exact one). All inclusive, really spendy, but soooooo good for a proper relaxing break. They have brilliant kids clubs, loads of entertainment should you want it, but also quiet, adult only areas should you want it whilst they're at kids clubs. Loads of food options to suit everything from the fussiest to most diverse pallet.

We went three years ago when my two were 4 and 6, and they still talk about it and ask when we're going back.

Equimum · 12/08/2021 09:36

Our children are similar ages and we go to a rural part of Cornwall every summer. They love spending days in the beaches, learning to kayak and body board and eating local food. The beaches are rarely busy here. We walk bits of the coast path and occasionally do a day trip to a castle, or an animal sanctuary.

Obviously, though, your experience will depend on what you enjoy. This is not the holiday for people that want to be busy all the time, but works for us as a complete break.
