DH injured on holiday - advice please?!

We are on a canal boat and DH has "had a fall". He's mostly OK, a bit scratched and shaken up but has a knee twice the size of what it should be.

Painkillers and ice have had no effect and he's obviously in pain. In normal times we would take a trip to minor injuries, however we are literally marooned. Our car is at least a whole (full on) days cruising away, but realistically two. DS and I are more than capable of making it back without his assistance.

Should we make a concerted effort back to the car tomorrow? He's adamant he hasn't broken anything with his extensive non-medical knowledge but he is clearly in a lot of pain. He's currently in bed and insisting that he will be up and at it by the morning. As it's just taken is 20 minutes to do a 5 minute walk I am sceptical.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated Smile

Take a taxi to minor injuries in the morning?

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 11/08/2021 22:22

Are you near anywhere he could get off the boat and get a taxi to an A&E? That's what I would do if possible.

taxi to A and E or minor injuries tomorrow morning?

Surely there’s a closer minor injuries?

SaltySheepdog · 11/08/2021 22:23

Taxi to minor injuries first thing. Then continue your holiday with you doing the heavy work and him resting his leg.

FudgeFlake · 11/08/2021 22:24

111 for the NHS service.

Fiddliestofsticks · 11/08/2021 22:24

Dock the boar, call a taxi and send him to hospital. You then head back to the car and collect him when you reach it (or he can meet you along the river somewhere). He might need to find a hotel to stay in if you're a couple days away from being able to pick him up.

Champagneforeveryone · 11/08/2021 22:27

We're actually moored in as perfect a spot as possible to get to a road (only a 20 minute hobble!) but Google tells me the closest minor injuries will be 45 minutes drive away.

We're also on a deadline to return the boat as it's due out for another weeks rental on our return (though we are ahead of time and do have a little time to spare)

Can you get to the nearest pub or shop or marina and go to A and E by taxi. It sounds serious. Or talk to 111

Dazedandconfused10 · 11/08/2021 22:32

Go to get it seen tomorrow the rental company will be able to get someone up there to take the boat back if need be. Also close by boaters are a friendly helpful bunch and may be able to offer assistance

icedcoffees · 11/08/2021 22:34

Stick DH in a taxi and you and DS stay on the boat. Meet him back at the car or pick up from the hospital.

elfycat · 11/08/2021 22:37

If he needs to be seen then do that. If there's a major problem call the marina and they'll send someone to drive the boat back (we were on the canals of Birmingham a week back. What to do in the case of emergencies was in a folder about the boat on ours).

At the very least keep him from hobbling about if it's that bad - and elevate it and get ice/cold compress so he's not doing any more damage. Literally lie down and just to the bathroom until you know it's not urgent.

minipie · 11/08/2021 22:38

I would get it seen. If he’s broken something in the joint and needs a bone repositioning it needs attention quickly - it would be much harder to fix well once it’s started to reheal.

Agree with taxi from nearby, and tell the rental company what’s happening in case they want to send someone to get the boat from you rather than rely on you to get it back in time.

IslandLulu · 11/08/2021 22:40

I agree he needs to be seen soon. Good luck OP.

How far away is your car by taxi? You could get a taxi to your car and drive it to where you're moored and then drive him to minor injuries.
Champagneforeveryone · 11/08/2021 22:43

Thanks all,
We'll wait and see what the morning brings, though he's currently moaning in his sleep so I suspect not much change.

DS and I will get up early and make a decision then.

Get a taxi back to your car so that you can get to A&E, or straight to A&E if you're closer. It feels like you're marooned but in reality you're only a short car drive away from places, it just feels like it when you're in a narrow boat. Hope he's OK.

This. He'll be better going alone than all of you trailing along to the hospital. Go for a hospital A&E rather than minor injuries. He may well be diverted there anyway as it's happened a lot due to CovId, and they'll have better painkillers. Then you and DS can return the boat.
CoffeeRunner · 11/08/2021 22:45

It is possible to go a little further along the canal & moor closer to a hospital? If so do that & have a taxi there and back.

I live by a canal. I'm guessing you aren't around here as the local MIU is 10 mins at most away.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 11/08/2021 22:48

Just put him ashore and get him a taxi to hospital. When he's done he can get back to you wherever you are. He needs seen; don't overcomplicate it.

RuthTopp · 12/08/2021 08:01

How are things with your husband this morning ?

Dozer · 12/08/2021 08:04

Why the focus on ‘minor injuries’? Sounds like you’re in the UK, and that he needs to be seen at an A&E.

45 min journey will be fine by cab.

Dozer · 12/08/2021 08:05

Wouldn’t delay going any longer.
