I've been listening to Red Handed (true crime and occasionally paranormal) and it's brilliant but want to try something different and maybe learn something new.

What do you do when listening to podcasts ?
Like sit in the sofa and twiddle your thumbs ?
While cleaning ?
In the bath ?
I can't quite get my head around it

I listen to podcasts whilst cooking or to get to sleep.

QueenofLouisiana · 11/08/2021 23:47

@Thekormachameleon I listen in bed, instead of reading or while putting away laundry.
The ones that are not terrifying I listen to when I can’t sleep- often at 3am.
I’ve started “Something Rhymes With Purple”, inspired by this thread. Thanks!

seething1234 · 11/08/2021 23:58

I generally love true crime, here’s what I’ve been listening to recently;

The Witness (an Irish podcast, very very good and very different to usual crime podcasts)

Confronting Columbine (I’ve just started this but season 1 Confronting OJ was good)

Who killed Emma - (brilliant bbc podcast)

Real Dictators

Unravel (listed to season 4 it’s bloody brilliant australian podcast)

Catching Melanie’s Killer

The Turning (about the sisters who left Mother Teresa’s order)

Yes Grin

I'm currently listening to Louis Theroux's old stuff on the BBC website. Also lots of stuff on Audible for free (well not free technically blah blah blah)

OhWhyNot · 12/08/2021 00:00

I listen while cooking/housework, driving (I drive to work) when lazing about and when going to sleep

Apart from news I’ve hardly watched tv in the last few months too many good podcasts to listen to

Mollymalone123 · 12/08/2021 00:01

Death in Ice Valley on bbc iplayer is outstanding

Ricepops · 12/08/2021 00:01

Lockdown parenting hell with Josh Widdicombe and Rob Beckett

RedSquirrelRoar · 12/08/2021 00:08

“Criminal” is one of my favourite podcasts - it’s stories about crime but it’s not all gruesome murders. There’s silly crimes, unusual crimes, and miscarriages of justice.
Also enjoying at the moment:
“British Scandal” (latest series is on rogue trader nick leeson),
“Firebug” (about a prolific arsonist), “Sentimental Garbage” (celebrating ‘chick lit’),
“Cheat!” (about con artists),
“Solvable” (true crime),
“Someone Knows Something” (true crime about unsolved cases)
“Missing & Murdered” (true crime but also highlights the poor treatment of indigenous people in Canada - very sad).

Place marking

play.acast.com/s/westcork/blow-ins

I'm currently listening to this. I've also watched both documentaries on Netflix and sky.
I listen when I'm walking mainly.

Parenting Hell
You’re Dead to me

And, if I’m in a cynical mood, Mark Steel.

Also like Reasons to be Cheerful

If it's a really interesting podcast, when I'm cleaning, doing the washing up, sorting out laundry, doing boring admin, or crocheting. I can listen along and concentrate on what they're saying as I'm getting on with stuff.

When I'm having trouble sleeping, I download one or two that are of minor interest & gently doze off as though I'm being read to sleep. It's surprisingly soothing having people discuss the county cricket as I lie in bed Grin

garlictwist · 12/08/2021 07:09

I really like the Wolf and Owl podcast with Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis. It always makes me laugh.

Alan Davies has a good one called 7 Pillars where he interviews celebrities about the books, films, places etc that have influenced them.

Love Parenting Hell with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdecombe.

I also listen to a lot of running podcasts.

garlictwist · 12/08/2021 07:10

I listen to them whilst I'm doing my morning kettlebells and also when I am doing housework or driving. Never listen to them in bed as I'd never get to sleep!

teawamutu · 12/08/2021 09:34

Believed - the US gymnastics team abuse case. Not an easy listen but incredible, compelling and victim centred.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 12/08/2021 09:38

A Thorough Examination with Chris and Xand. I'm finding it very interesting and moving. Also The Edge of Sleep if you like horror. But really don't listen to it if you're an insomniac.

PunchedTit4ASoul · 12/08/2021 11:00

So many great suggestions! Thanks. I get what pp's mean about red handed but they really do their research. I hate 2 or 3 parter episodes. Much prefer feature length.

Excellent thread, I'm adding lots of these to my phone!

Another good one for gently falling asleep to is Fortunately, with Fi and Jane. Very soothing (and funny).

For people who like You're Wrong About, Michael Hobbs has another podcast called Maintenance Phase about the wellness industry. Really interesting.

Mollymalone123 · 12/08/2021 14:25

The Death in Ice Valley I mentioned has a massive following with people around the world deciphering handwriting and even visiting places/hotels etc and tracing family geneology.Fascinating case of a bizarre death where there’s a possibility the woman in question was a spy.
