I've been listening to Red Handed (true crime and occasionally paranormal) and it's brilliant but want to try something different and maybe learn something new.

I've just listened to this one on BBC Sounds...
www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/p071k0jv

I enjoy This American Life - pretty varied content with some Pulitzer Prize-winning episodes.

BettyBakesBuns · 11/08/2021 22:49

I'm really enjoying Neil Oliver's "Love Letter to the British Isles". It's 100 remarkable places around the UK that tell the story of our history, going back to prehistoric times.

For any lovers of They Walk Among Us/Casefile etc try My Favourite Murder, a true crime comedy podcast - not disrespectful about the actual crime just presented in a fun and interesting way. They cover true crimes in their longer episodes but also have minisodes of 20 minutes or so where they read out people's "hometown" murders or kick ass survival stories. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

For learning interesting stuff, More or Less, Something Rhymes with Purple, Make me Smart. Also This American Life or This is Love.

A great episode of This is Love is Episode 32 Among The Oak Trees "One day in the spring of 1986, a woman in Hot Springs, Arkansas named Ruth Coker Burks was visiting a friend in the hospital. She noticed a door down the hall that had a red tarp over it, and the nurses were avoiding the room. So she decided to sneak in"

Drunk women solving crime!

3 regular writers/performers with a guest on each week. One of the regulars presents a true crime case and the others act as 'detectives' to give their view on what happens next, who's guilty etc as it rolls on. With light feminist humour, it's a true crime podcast with a twist... OF LIME!! 😂

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 11/08/2021 23:00

Stuff you should know - informative

Parenting Hell with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicome for funny comedian interviews about parenting and silly listener stories. Lighthearted.

Three Bean Salad - Random topics each week discussed by 3 comedians (Mike Wozniak being one of them and one of my favourite humans, he’s delightful).

I listen to a lot of comedians podcasts, Katherine Ryan, Paul Chowdury, Alan Davies, Romesh Ranganath and Tom Davies (owl and wolf)

James Acasters perfect sounds for comedy / music.

Off Menu - Ed Gamble and James Acaster interview celebs about their dream meals

Also used to religiously listen to redhanded but agree with pp that they're so smug now. I also find the 10 minutes of banter before they get into the case really annoying.

This American Life and Reply All have already been mentioned and are excellent. 99% Invisible is a show about design and it is really interesting - it isn’t (just) about obvious design stuff like architecture and furniture but about all sorts of other things that have design principles at work in them - the sound design of sports broadcasting, how wonderful and useful designs have come out of terrible disasters, lots more. Plus the host has an amazing velvety voice that soothes me immediately.

Couldn’t get on with My Favourite Murder - found them just too inane. But they do have a cult following.

UnGoogled · 11/08/2021 23:16

I am bingeing The Office Ladies. Its hosted by the actresses from the American Office and they are adorable. They loved their time on the show and talk about loads of interesting sidebars apart from acting, too. Good, lighthearted fun.

Who the Hell is Hamish is excellent. It's a bit like Teachers Pet but without the murder.

Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry is my absolute favourite and has taught me so much, as has the Infinite Monkey Cage!

In Our Time is the best show on the radio. I also endlessly fascinated by hearing about things I never knew I was interested in.
