How often you you redecorate a room?

I'm decorating the living room, it definitely needed doing, but since it's only been 6 years since I last did it and that seems like no time at all.

How often do you refresh a rooms decor?

These days an absolute minimum of four years, usually longer, way longer.

TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 10/08/2021 21:31

All the walls in my tiny house are soft white, so all I do is change the soft furnishings are accent colour items. I plan to do this every 5 or so years. Possibly more of I can get away with it 🤣.

Pumpkinstace · 10/08/2021 22:26

The youngest is 5 now.

I'm hoping it only got so scuffed and shabby due to having 2 small children in it.

I did the lounge & playroom - 2010, when I extended to gain the playroom.
Previously painted 2002 soon after we moved in.

Kitchen, utility and conservatory - 2019, when I had a new kitchen fitted. Kitchen previously painted around 2003 due to conservatory being added and some units moved, dwarf walls in conservatory every few years, utility was still builders magnolia from 1998 house construction.

Dining room - previous owners did and not changed since we brought in 2001.

Downstairs loo - around 2010.

Hall, stairs & landing - probably around 2002, and then I redid the hall & landing plus as far up the stairs as I could reach in 2010 with the same paint.

My bedroom - around 2002/3.
Ensuite - ceiling done every few years as the paint flakes, walls 2002.

Spare room - did the woodwork and ceiling when furloughed in April 2020 but didn't have wall paint due to lockdown and have never got round to finishing it (still builders magnolia).

Dc1 room - 2002 while pregnant with him.

Dc2 room - still builders magnolia.

Main bathroom - previous owners did and not changed since we brought in 2001.

And yes, with the exception of the kitchen & utility, it could all do with refreshing.

Once every 20 years.

OhGiveUp · 11/08/2021 10:43

All the downstairs rooms and staircase, once every 12 months.
My bedroom every couple of years, the spare bedrooms get done rarely as they're not really used much.
All the walls are plain matt white and I usually take off on holiday while the decorator gets on with it.

Almost never in the full sense. It's dull i suppose, but we deliberately decorated neutrally and classically. I sometimes switch up art/cushions/decor or say...repaint furniture (I enjoy upcycling) every few years for interest or to adjust to a trend if I like one -but a full makeover, probably never.

If I genuinely wanted to do it and it was affordable though, I would irrespective of how long it had last been. I can't see why it matters really, people can do what they like with their own space and funds.

OhGiveUp · 11/08/2021 11:02

@Binnaggy Why would he? I like nice clean walls and he likes the job.

We just did the downstairs and hallways this year after living in the house for 10. Reason - I wanted to wait until DD is old enough not to always touch the walls and we also waited until we re-did her room.

Kitchen was done in full 4 years ago anyway.

It was originally scheduled for early 2020 but Covid came and it was shelved for 10 months.

I think the bedrooms are next but I am looking into getting new furnitures as well so no current timeline.

Bluntness100 · 11/08/2021 11:25

Depends, either when I get bored of it or it needs done, which can be anything from a few months to say five years.

LarsErickssong · 11/08/2021 11:29

10-15 years on average I would say, maybe a bit less for bedrooms

LarsErickssong · 11/08/2021 11:30

We had a full new kitchen fitted in 2008 and all the walls are white, going to repaint them this year and the lounge was done a couple of years before that and the wallpaper is starting to peel in some areas so that will be done next year

Tablow · 11/08/2021 11:33

We moved in in 2016 and haven't redone the paint we did in that first year but I have two under 5s so I might as well wait a few years to minimise smeary fingerprints on any new coats.

MrsPumpkinSeed · 11/08/2021 11:39

We moved in 5 years ago and gave the place a piant throughout.
We had to re paint the kitchen diner at Christmas due to dc scuffs (they were toddlers when we moved in). Did the hall a few weeks ago.

I might do the playroom and bathroom this autumn.

I change cushion covers and accessories every season.

UseOfWeapons · 11/08/2021 11:48

Have lived in my house for 12 years, and my bedroom and the sitting room have been done twice. The kitchen had a major refitting 2 years ago, and the rest of the house was done at the same time.
I’ve only replaced one carpet, as most of the house is either floorboards or stone tiles.

LadyJaye · 11/08/2021 12:09

As infrequently as possible. I LOATHE decorating.

Hen2018 · 11/08/2021 12:13

Approx every 5 years.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 11/08/2021 12:18

Our house was new seven years ago. We’ve replaced the living room carpet and painted the walls and ceiling in their, painted the kitchen, cloakroom , hall stairs and landing and our bedroom. The spare rooms are rarely used, so they’ve been left.

I want to do the kitchen and living room again, but I’m working up to it.

Mirrorxx · 11/08/2021 12:37

@MrsPumpkinSeed you buy new accessories every season?

emmathedilemma · 11/08/2021 12:38

I haven't done some of my rooms since I moved in 13 years ago!! And the ones I have done it's been a recoat of the same colour paint or because the bathroom had a full refit. To be fair, the ones that haven't been done do need painting.

LarsErickssong · 11/08/2021 13:12

Those of you who buy new things each year what do you do with the old bits?

Bluntness100 · 11/08/2021 13:15

@LarsErickssong

Those of you who buy new things each year what do you do with the old bits?
Generally people give them to charity or friends and family or sell them.
pineapples56 · 11/08/2021 13:17

We're in the middle of redecorating now and vow not to do it again anytime soon. Quite a lot of upheaval and disruption and everything will need an industrial clean afterwards. Thank goodness it's summer and we can chuck the kids (and ourselves!) outside.
