Concerned about diabetes in 12 year old and on holiday

We are away on holiday (UK) and I have suddenly put two and two together with my son and become concerned. He has been tired for about a week and started drinking and peeing a lot more than usual and his breath smells terribly acidic all the time and he’s getting intermittent stomach pains. Can this wait until we get home (next Monday) or what can I do whilst away? He’s not feeling unwell in himself and is feeling OK.

I may of course be over thinking this and it’s just a bug.

No I don’t think that can wait I’m afraid

Lindtnotlint · 09/08/2021 18:28

Can’t wait. A and E. sorry.

hellsbells99 · 09/08/2021 18:28

Phone 111 and they should give you a local appointment or tell you to go to A&E

Suggestions of what to do? It’s nigh on impossible to get an appointment with my own Gp let alone as a temporary resident somewhere else.

Call 111 if you’re in England or Wales

54321nought · 09/08/2021 18:28

Go to A and E now

nimbuscloud · 09/08/2021 18:29

Novina · 09/08/2021 18:29

It can't wait. Take him to A & E. Do not delay.

Pompoms1 · 09/08/2021 18:30

I agree, go to the hospital.

Pantene23 · 09/08/2021 18:30

A&E NOW.

WeakAsIAm · 09/08/2021 18:30

Diabetes nurse here, take him to A&E now. This will not wait, not for the night not for the morning and definitely not until morning.

Sorry to be blunt if this is type 1 diabetes he will be dead by Monday. Sorry for the horrific response but have to tell you the truth

Lindtnotlint · 09/08/2021 18:30

(Am a T1 so not making it up - if you were at home you could go to GP but first thing they would do is send you to A and E. you could go home first if it would be v inconvenient to be admitted to hospital where you are - normally diagnosis means a few nights in hospital. Don’t wait - it will get worse every day and can rapidly become really quite dangerous, not to mention very uncomfortable).

Sexnotgender · 09/08/2021 18:30

I’d phone for advice. I’m not sure waiting another week is advisable.

Lindtnotlint · 09/08/2021 18:33

By go home first I mean drive to A and E near your house - NOT NOT NOT wait till Monday.

Undiagnosed diabetes can result in DKA which is really bad. He needs his blood sugar levels checked ASAP. Everything you have described is a symptom. You need to act now.

Icytundra · 09/08/2021 18:33

Get to A&E. I was told if I'd left out 24 hours I would've probably died.

SheABitSpicyToday · 09/08/2021 18:35

Needs to be seen immediately. My husband is type 1, diagnosed at 14 and ended up in hospital for a very very long time.

54321nought · 09/08/2021 18:38

I asked about covid as I have come across some suggestions that type 1 diabetes is developing in youngsters after they have recovered from covid, I wasn't suggesting this could be covid.

Either way, I hope you are on your way to hospital now. Please update us and let us know how he is

Latte40 · 09/08/2021 18:39

Hopefully you're on your way...he needs to be seen immediately.

Gingernaut · 09/08/2021 18:39

This is not a GP matter.

Get to A&E

LifeExperience · 09/08/2021 18:43

Go to A & E. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a medical emergency with a 10% death rate. Do not wait. A GP will be useless in treating this. Your son needs to be in hospital. Please take this advice from the mother of a T1D who almost died from DKA.

IseeScottishhills · 09/08/2021 18:44

Ex paediatric diabetic nurse please don't waste time calling 111 or going to see a GP or go back home to your local A and E attend the nearest A and E now.

LordOfTheThings · 09/08/2021 18:45

This absolutely cannot wait @Brigittebidet, you need to take him to A & E. My DD was diagnosed with T1 when she was 3 and it's not something that can wait. Not to alarm you but you need to get there asap.
