Concerned about diabetes in 12 year old and on holiday

We are away on holiday (UK) and I have suddenly put two and two together with my son and become concerned. He has been tired for about a week and started drinking and peeing a lot more than usual and his breath smells terribly acidic all the time and he’s getting intermittent stomach pains. Can this wait until we get home (next Monday) or what can I do whilst away? He’s not feeling unwell in himself and is feeling OK.

I may of course be over thinking this and it’s just a bug.

I hope the OP is in A and E with her son now, and I hope they come back and let us know how everything is

Breadpapercone · 09/08/2021 21:16

Agree with someone above - have seen more children with diabetes recently and poss linked to them having covid

TokyoSushi · 09/08/2021 21:18

Yes agree, hope you're on the way to A&E

Common age for Type I to be diagnosed - would go to A&E to be on the safe side.

itsgettingwierd · 09/08/2021 21:21

Another saying a and e.

Clearly despite you saying he's well something definitely isn't right for you to have been trying to build a puzzle and came up with something so serious.

DeRigueurMortis · 09/08/2021 21:22

OP hope you're not posting because you have gone to A&E.

If not then go NOW.

As pp's have said this cannot wait. Not even for a few hours.

Good luck.

olidora63 · 09/08/2021 21:26

I hope you are in AE …your son has all the clinical sights of Type 1 Diabetes and it is potentially life threatening!

Fleurty · 09/08/2021 21:28

DKA is very dangerous, if he has it and goes untreated he will fall into a coma. If this happens at night and he stays in that state for hours he may not wake up or he may suffer permanent damage to his kidneys, eyes or nervous system.

People hear about type 2 diabetics going years without being diagnosed and think it isn't serious. Type 1 is serious and needs treating immediately. Please don't risk it.

Any update OP?

SingingInTheShithouse · 10/08/2021 07:51

A&E as others have said, they need to look at his sugar levels pronto.

This happened witch a friends DS & they didn't recognise the symptoms until he collapsed, spent weeks in ICU & nearly died. Well done for spotting it, but not something you can mess around with. Good luck

Rupertpenrysmistress · 10/08/2021 08:19

Agree A&E it's the damage you don't see. You clearly think it is diabetes so take him now. Poor kid he must feel dreadful and others have warned of DKA he could start fitting or loose consciousness.blet us.know how you get on.

Brigittebidet · 10/08/2021 11:00

Thanks all. It is diabetes. Very high sugar reading but not crisis point. Think we will have to stay in until they stabilise him and then hopefully they will transfer us to the diabetes team in our home town. I appreciate the candid responses even though they scared the shit out of me!

Ah I'm so sorry @Brigittebidet but so glad you took him to A & E. I was scared shitless when DD was diagnosed and it's a steep learning curve, but you'll get there.

Enko · 10/08/2021 11:06

Pleased you went to a&e

Bimblesalong · 10/08/2021 11:08

So sorry @Brigittebidet but so glad you took him in. my dad was dx’d aged 7, 14 years ago. Lots to learn but the tech is amazing now and there’s lots of support available. My ds is asleep after a weekend clubbing 🙄 whilst his pump sorts his levels.

Take care and it will be ok. Xx

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 10/08/2021 11:12

I’m glad you got him into hospital but sorry about the diagnosis.

Thanks for letting us know. Lots of love to you both xx

itsgettingwierd · 10/08/2021 11:47

Well done for noticing and listening to advise and acting.

I'm sure whilst in holiday there must have been a part of you hoping it was nothing.

Very sorry to hear you were proved right but things have moved on so much with diabetes now and there's much better 'technology' to help control it.

Hope he gets better soon.

FuckingFabulous · 10/08/2021 12:20

Wow, scary! So glad you got him assessed quickly!

Capricornandproud · 10/08/2021 13:50

Oh love…. My first thoughts were bloody well done you!!! You did so excellently worrying and putting it all together. Onwards and upwards from here and your lad is lucky to have you xx

Well said.

Thanks OP

Novina · 10/08/2021 14:50

I'm glad you have a diagnosis. There's a learning curve coming, but you can handle it. Follow the link from JellyBabiesSaveLives . Diabetes treatment and technology is so much better than ever before, and still improving. It'll all be ok.

Icytundra · 10/08/2021 14:50

Sorry about the diagnosis, but well done for getting him seen quickly

Iusedtobesoooomuchfun · 10/08/2021 14:55

So glad you took him. I came on to say my brother went into a coma at 11 when he fell ill with diabetes so take him to hospital!

Good luck with it all Flowers

Brigittebidet · 10/08/2021 15:36

Thank you all. Such a weird holiday but anyway! Also slightly freaked out at the thought of having to calculate carbs for the rest of his life.
