If your toddler dd's sleep in nightdresses how do you keep their legs warm during winter

My dd(3) always sleeps in pyjamas except during summer when she wears nightdresses . I am thinking of putting her in nightdresses every night or most nights , even during winter ,but worry if her little legs would get cold in the night. She uses the duvet but most of the time she winds up kicking it off. Would socks be enough? Would she feel cold if her nightdress goes up when she is asleep? She and I bedshare if it is of any relevance . Any advise would be greatly appreciated x

We have long sleeve nightdresses from Asda, she'll soon sort out the covers herself if she's cold.

Parker231 · 09/08/2021 00:20

Mine always wore pjs in winter as it was easier to keep warm and nothing when it was a hot night.

notacooldad · 09/08/2021 00:24

I think this is an odd post!
How would we know if she would feel the cold? We dont know how warm your house us. Surely she'll tell you if she is cold.
Why are you thinking of putting her in a nightlife anyway if pjs work in winter.

Won't she be able to tell you if she's cold or if she prefers PJs in winter?

WorraLiberty · 09/08/2021 00:40

Eh?

Wouldn't a 3 year old just pull the cover up again if she's kicked it off and she's cold?

If not, why would you put her in a nightdress anyway?

Elvisinthechipshop · 09/08/2021 00:43

Legs don't usually get all that cold, feet do. Solution: bedsocks! (Normal socks, no special purchases needed.)

WaltzingTilda · 09/08/2021 00:47

She doesn't really pull the covers back on, I put it back on her and she kicks it off, that said if she is really cold she might pull it back on I am not sure. I've seen some pretty nightdresses which dd also seems to like so thought it would be nice to put her in nightdresses every night if possible.Shes grown out of her pyjamas and I need to get her some new sleepwear for the colder months anyway, so was thinking of getting her nightdresses .

You've only mentioned the disadvantages here, so what's made you think that nightdresses all the time would be better?

ooowhataday · 09/08/2021 00:49

This is a wired post. Clearly she'd be warmer in pjs so just put her in pjs in winter 🤷‍♀️ who cares if her nightwear is pretty if it means she might be cold.

If it's for the colder months then pyjamas are a no brainer.

Pretty sleepwear is nice but unnecessary. Being warm and having a good nights sleep is the priority.

ooowhataday · 09/08/2021 00:50

*Weird not wired

MotionActivatedDog · 09/08/2021 00:50

This doesn’t make sense to me. If you’re worried she’ll be cold in a nightdress, put her in pyjamas. Why wouldn’t you?

That's what I'm confused about?

Or even joggers and t.shirt - anything to keep her warm rather than 'pretty'.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 09/08/2021 00:56

If you really want to use nighties then put them over pyjama bottoms or leggings. I agree there's no reason not to just use pyjamas though

ineedaholidaynow · 09/08/2021 00:58

I didn’t think nightdresses were a thing anymore.

If you are worried about her legs being cold put her in pjs

DoucheCanoe · 09/08/2021 01:04

In OP's defence my daughter prefers nighties and chooses them for herself because they're comfier apparently. She is a naturally hot person though so she sleeps in her pants and throws the nightie on before bed/when she gets up.

I've no idea if she thinks they're pretty or not!

Yahtze · 09/08/2021 01:14

Mine only wears them in warm weather or her legs would get cold. Be guided by her and what she prefers. You can get those zip in bed cover things if you're worried she will kick the covers off. I don't sleep in a nightdress in the winter. It's blooming cold!

WaltzingTilda · 09/08/2021 01:22

Thank you all for replying. @Skiptheheartsandflowers The only advantage is since a few months ago she has been prone to getting UTIs and the gp said to wear loose fitting cotton clothes etc , so I thought maybe I should dress her in nightdresses as much as possible as well ad they are more loose fitting than pjs. This thread has made my decision that much more difficult. I think I am going to get her a couple of each and see what works best for her. Thank you all once again Flowers

IHow bloody rude Is it only my post you are criticising when others have said similar?
My points about not knowing if your child is cold or not is valid because, as I said we dont know how warm your house is. To be honest I thought it was a useful points to add to the convo. 🤷‍♀️Also we dont know what tog rating the duvet is and as she is sleeping with you she will be getting some body warmth as well.

However you dropped a massive drip feed which would have been helpful in your first post about Uti.
In that case my as ice is to stay with nighties if she's happy.
Is that point a more valid contribution to your discussion?
BTW socks maybe too much unless your house is freezing or your child is particularly nesh.

lannistunut · 09/08/2021 07:12

If the nightdress is because you like them more, that's silly. If due to uti, then put her in knee socks.

She will tell you which feels better if you let her.

GoAwayCat · 09/08/2021 07:12

I've been having exactly the same thoughts OP - my DD has decreed she will only wear nighties and has rejected all PJs.

I don't know whether this will last until winter or not but if it does, she'll be cold as our house is freezing in winter.

I had been thinking either long fluffy socks or just try to persuade her to wear PJ bottoms under the dresses. She has hundreds of pyjamas and loads of hand me downs so we'll have plenty even if she only wears the bottom halves.

In your shoes I'd probably get a few pairs of loose comfy leggings and some long fluffy socks. Either that or some eBay pyjama bundles? Then it doesn't matter so much if the tops don't get worn much. Last resort I'd let her choose some pyjamas with Frozen, Peppa or whatever on them. My DD has rejected all the lovely John Lewis nighties I bought her in favour of a sparkly polyester Little Mermaid she chose and refuses to take off in the mornings.

If you do want nighties for winter I'd start buying them soon though - they are quite hard to come by over the winter. DDs nightie obsession began in about February and it was really hard to find any in the shops.

cookiecreampie · 09/08/2021 07:22

You're way over thinking this OP.

burritofan · 09/08/2021 07:31

At 3 surely she just wears whatever she wants to bed and can tell you if she’s cold, hot, whatever? If she kicks the cover off she doesn’t want it. She won’t be cold if she’s bedsharing in any case, she can just stick her icicle toes on you.
