How much should I pay for this?

There is a thing I want! It's a piece of memorabilia, it's pretty scarce but also there isn't a huge amount of demand for it. I would expect to buy it for about £15. I've just seen it advertised on eBay to buy now for £150!

Now, I have £150 and I really want the thing and I will treasure it. If they were all going for £150, that would be fine. But the thought of the seller chuckling over the ludicrous price he got for it makes me cross.

To make matters worse, I can see the seller owns a shop, and in the photo the bloody thing is clearly labelled as £90! So it's like he knows he's taking the piss totally.

So... do I:

A) Buy it for £150 and love it and make the poor struggling shopkeeper's day and he's probably saving up for his child's medical treatment or something?
B) Tell him he's a CF and offer him £15 which he will likely reject?
C) Ignore it and potentially never see one of these again in my lifetime?
D) Point out the price label and offer him £90?
E) Other

Thanks!

Jesus the dilemma

Must take you fucking hours going round tesco's

SW1amp · 08/08/2021 08:31

Where is the shop? Can you or a friend go there to buy it? Or arrange a courier to collect it?

I can understand a small mark up to cover the hassle of posting it but £60 is a 66% mark up (in top of the already inflated price!) which is a bit ridiculous

stopknockingonmydoor · 08/08/2021 08:34

Any item is worth what someone will pay for it - is it worth £150 to you?

In this instance I'd contact the seller, offer £90 plus whatever it would cost to post (assuming no-one can collect) and see if they'll accept that. If they refuse, it's up to you whether you purchase for the full asking price. How disappointed would you be to go back tomorrow and see it had sold and you'd missed out?

LubaLuca · 08/08/2021 08:42

When did you see it for £15? Is it likely that another one will come up elsewhere for that sort of price again?

PegLegAntoine · 08/08/2021 08:45

What makes you think it should be available at £15?
(Genuine question, I don’t mean it as snarky as it sounds!)

You’ve called it memorabilia so that suggests it’s not a current thing with a set price? It’s normal for prices of things like that to go up, and as a PP said things are worth what someone is willing to pay.

Annoying about the £90 though I’d perhaps try making an offer of maybe £100 to include postage?

bonfireheart · 08/08/2021 08:53

@ssd you sound tiresome.

OP, maybe meet in middle and offer between £90 and £150. And as it is scarce and rarely comes up, you might need to rethink the £15.

Ouch. Was this necessary?

There are a few similar ones currently for sale at around £15, just not this particular one. The CF seller has these other ones for sale too - and he's put those up for £150 as well.

Do you have this same odd attitude when you buy a car, clothing or even to the supermarket where the mark up is huge?

What about when you eat in a restaurant and the meal is only a couple of quid to make but they’ve charged you £50?

Are you nasty to the retailers and call them CF? Hmm

SquirryTheSquirrel · 08/08/2021 09:39

Have you searched under sold listings for this specific item? That will give an idea how often they come up and whether this particular one is more expensive than the others for a reason.

Also, have you tried other selling platforms to buy this item?

I would leave the seller's likely feelings/reason for overpricing out of your decision. Just base it on your feelings. How much would you miss £150? If you don't buy it and never see it again, will you kick yourself for not buying this one?

I wouldn't offer £15 on a £150 item - the seller might get pissed off and block you. Look at his feedback to see if he often accepts offers. £90 is probably the lowest I'd risk.

Tlollj · 08/08/2021 09:43

What is it? How far is the shop? Can you go there and pay £90? Is that a stupid question? Because if you could you would?
Just phone then see what they say.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 08/08/2021 09:43

If you really want it and you have the money, just pay the asking price. Supply and demand ‘innit’. 😬

Imissmoominmama · 08/08/2021 09:46

Where is the shop? If it’s near me, I’ll buy it and post it to you!

Keep looking or offer what its actually worth to you.
tywysoges · 08/08/2021 09:50

If you think there isn’t much demand for it, you can ‘watch item’, then when the seller doesn’t sell they might offer you a discounted price - I didn’t know they could do that but happened to me fairly recently. I had the option to counteroffer too.

atlastifoundit · 08/08/2021 09:59

An item is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. So if you are prepared to pay £150, then that's what it is worth.

StormyTeacups · 08/08/2021 10:02

D

Or go to the shop.

girlmom21 · 08/08/2021 10:05

If there are others on sale for £15 why not just buy the others?

PostMenWithACat · 08/08/2021 10:09

It sounds as though others are similar but not the same. Every Pokemon card looks the same to me, not to my young adult children. What is the sale price history of items that are exactly the same op? It sounds as though you may be comparing apples with pears.

MuddyStiletto · 08/08/2021 10:28

Buy it if you'll get some enjoyment out of it

I think you're probably right. I'll offer £90, see what he says and take it from there.

The shop is the other end of the country so going there isn't an option. I can't find another exactly the same in the sold listings for comparison, but the listings can't be complete because there are things I've bought in the past that should have come up with the same search terms.

Thanks everyone.

If it's on eBay for £150 it will cost them about £25 in fees to sell it. Then they have to post it. Depending on the weight and service used this is potentially another £15-20 to get it insured adequately. You then have to factor in the cost of returns, tax and vat which seller have to incorporate into their price. You're now not far off the £90 on the sticker. If there's a best offer make an offer for what you want to pay. If not send the seller a message asking if they'd consider X amount. Don't take the piss though or you'll probably get blocked and won't be able to buy it at all.

Yes, the results are time-limited - I think they go back 90 days.

Offering £90 sounds reasonable.

piratehugs · 08/08/2021 10:57

Ooooh he's declined my offer!
