Shocked Myself Today

I am usually a very tolerant person ( well maybe not behind the wheel but in day to day life I am not confrontational at all). Anyway, DD12 & I were in Aldi earlier & it was really busy. We were politely trying to negotiate the crowds as they were opening a new till. We didn’t faff around & we kept walking forward so we wouldn’t hold anyone else up but this rude woman said to me something like “Stop yacking & just go where you’re supposed to go” & I just saw red. She was already walking away so I don’t know if she heard me but I burst out with “ Excuse me, we were not yacking, we were trying to reach a till like everyone else” & then when she was further away I said “ Shut your mouth”. She just really made me angry & I’m not angry as a rule! DD was shocked & told me off for being violent! I did say to her that it wasn’t my finest hour. DD hasn’t got the quietest of voices so customers in the queue were glancing at us. One lady did look quite amused! Have you ever gone out of character & “ flipped”? I blamed the fact that I am menopausal, haven’t eaten properly for 2 days & am not sleeping very well.

Cringe.

I understand you were upset but lowering yourself to the level of a fishwife in front of your husband and the other customers is embarrassing.

Galassia · 06/08/2021 18:51

Sorry, not your husband! Even worse it was in front of your child.

HerMammy · 06/08/2021 18:54

Violent? think your DD needs to learn the meaning of the word.
Calling someone out on their rudeness isn’t being a fishwife, hopefully the cheeky mare will think twice next time.

Good on you for standing up to her, could've left the Shut your mouth out though!

I think it's good for your DD to see you stick up for yourself!

Polkadots2021 · 06/08/2021 19:29

You must be a lovely gentle mum if your DD thinks having a go at a nasty rude stranger is violent! Good for you OP, that woman was out of order and you didn't stand for it.
penguinwithasuitcase · 06/08/2021 19:42

Oh no, not a fishwife!

A FISHWIFE, IMAGINE!

And in front of the CHILDREN...

Ilikewinter · 06/08/2021 20:20

Good on you is what I say, I work in retail and cant tell you the amount of rude customers ive served recently, I love it when a customer calls out another rude customer.

CurryLover55 · 06/08/2021 20:23

I definitely wasn’t a fishwife!

And she didn’t hear “ Shut your mouth”

The4ks · 06/08/2021 20:29

Ah good for you.
I swear people are getting ruder by the day.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 06/08/2021 20:58

Oh you Upperty Thing you.!
Imagine how powerless you'd feel if you'd just sucked up the rudeness. You spoke up and said something at the time and it was dealt with and you moved on. Also. Your DD could see that it is OK to speak up and call attention to rudeness. I take it this was uncharacteristic. Sometimes that is no bad thing. Spleen duly vented.

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 06/08/2021 21:49

Sounds great, good on you too many judgemental busybodies around policing other people and they expect you to meekly take it!

TillyTopper · 06/08/2021 22:01

I flipped at the Dartford Tunnel once. You used to have to queue and throw your money in a large bin then the barrier came up. As I was queuing the car behind with 4 blokes in nudged my rear bumper. When I got to the barrier I threw my money in but the barrier didn't go up (later the operator told me it was a machine fault). The driver of the car who had nudged me held down his horn full blast. I got out, stormed back to his car, opened his door and started to drag him out. Luckily he was fucking petrified. It ended when the police came over and we got back in our respective cars. Have never regretted it.

Imnewhere1991 · 06/08/2021 22:04

Good for you. I'd have done the same.

chitofftheshovel · 06/08/2021 22:11

My partner and I had dog shit flung at us a few months back. Honest gospel. We were walking the dog on a footpath next to a boat park and this bloke was using his paddle to fling shit away from his boat. Fair do's but....he actually looked at us and aimed. Luckily for him he missed but I saw absolute red and tore a new one out of him.

Blueskytoday06 · 06/08/2021 22:13

Oh don't worry about it. If it's out of character just write it off. She was rude too!!! Maybe next time she'll think before mouthing off.

CurryLover55 · 06/08/2021 22:14

chitofftheshovel it turns out your username is very appropriate! How disgusting though!

Apart from the "Shut your mouth", what you said was absolutely fine, the other woman was rude.

We all have our moments. Try to forget it now.

DorothyCotton · 06/08/2021 22:17

Meh.... What happens in Aldi stays in Aldi.

At the full height of the pandemic, when we were all supposed to be socially distanced, some woman leant right over me and three year old DS, she was right over his head and freaked him right out basically shoving him into the veg. He kicked her in the shin and pushed her away. Fair enough. Before I could say anything she'd flown onto a rage shouting at me. As I looked up at her I realised she'd got a black dog pooh bag over her face in leiu of a mask one handle over each ear. It was flapping up and down as she ranted. I was going to give her a mouthful in return but ended up laughing. Took the wind right out of her sails.

chitofftheshovel · 06/08/2021 22:21

CurryLover55 oh yes, so it does!!
Funny thing is that we use the lake for water sports and walking, partner lives 300m away and we've seen him since. He's always looked a bit shame-faced (and so he bloody well should).

Noshowwithoutpunch · 06/08/2021 22:31

I remember as a student browsing the Chanel counter in a department store with a friend talking to my friend about how lovely Allure perfume was.
The sales assistant looked down her nose at me, scoffed and told me it wasn't 'Allure' it was "Allluuurrre" in a mock French accent.
I replied I didn't care how it was pronounced as it still smelt the same and asked if she'd ever had any training in people skills.

Sparklfairy · 07/08/2021 05:49

@TillyTopper Are you a woman? Shock I know the Dartford Tunnel well and even when the machines worked you'd still get that awful bottleneck as people shoved their way back to two lanes. I can be feisty but there is zero chance I would storm over to four men and drag one of them out. I'm not sure whether to give you a high five or a wide berth Grin

Mollymalone123 · 07/08/2021 05:55

@DorothyCotton 😂😂 sorry for your son but that must have be hilarious to see her 😂

Mrsbclinton · 07/08/2021 10:21

@DorothyCotton that just made me laugh out loud 😂😂

Sorry, you're saying that you physically assaulted someone who tooted their horn at you and the police had to be called - and you have no regrets about that?!
