How long does it take you to tidy up after dinner?

Just that really.

I don't have a dishwasher and it takes me about 30 minutes to wash up, tidy/clean the kitchen and clean the table (including toddler DD's highchair). Would I save loads of time with a dishwasher? How long does it take you to tidy up?

4mins or so, longer if dh or ds have been doing the cooking.
But it won't just be down to having a dishwasher.

I, for example, don't have a highchair to take apart and clean. (probably that also means you have to clean the floor).

I also have grown up dc that automatically clear their things from the table.
I also clear up as I go along when cooking.

I am laughing at the ages comments!
Me too! How do you clever people that do it quickly do it quickly?
I’m sure I used to be a good house person once. Now cba. It NEVER goes away.

RosesAndHellebores · 05/08/2021 22:33

No more than 10 minutes

Most of the stuff is already in the dishwasher.
Put dirty plates and serving dishes in dishwasher
Wipe down hob
Wipe down drainer and sink
Wipe down mats and tablecloth
I guess unloading dishwasher in the morning takes as long as it takes the settle to boil

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 05/08/2021 22:38

Don't bother most nights, deal with it the next day after work.

BlobbyBloo · 05/08/2021 22:38

What feels like sodding ages.

We have a dish washer but cook all meals from scratch so there are pots, pans and various utensils all over the place. Still a million times better than eating processed food though.

Taliskerskye · 05/08/2021 22:46

I don’t! I do it the next day
SHOCK HORROR

Glassbook · 05/08/2021 22:46

It depends what I’ve cooked, but probably about 10-15 mins. I didn’t have a dishwasher last year so it would take another 10-15 mins to fill the sink and wash everything.

Yes, having a toddler adds some time I'm sure. Not just her high chair but the floor under her chair and the kitchen floor where she's been snacking. Plus toddler bowls and cups are so fiddly to clean. Obviously she can't help and DH can't either as he's doing her bath.

Relieved to see there’s a couple of people like me that leave it until the next day! After I’ve eaten my dinner I just want to sit and relax. Not jump up and start cleaning. I have a dishwasher so I just load it in the morning. I don’t like people putting things in there as they use them, as I then need to rearrange it to accommodate pans or whatever. I prefer to just have it all on the side and load it myself.

redandwhite1 · 06/08/2021 07:56

Dishwasher here so 5 mins max but I'm also a clean cook

Husband, easily 10-15 mins as he is not a tidy up as he goes person

violetbunny · 06/08/2021 07:59

Maybe 10 mins? I too like to clean as I go. Any rubbish, peelings ex go into the bin as I cook, if I'm waiting for a pot to boil or similar I will wash things while I wait. All ingredients go straight back in the fridge or cupboard as soon as I'm done. We have a dishwasher too.

Auntienumber8 · 06/08/2021 08:24

Dishwasher here and I do some tidying up as I go. What I also do depends on at what stage the dishwasher is at. I tend to take clean stuff from the dishwasher to use as I go along as I hate unpacking it. We didn’t have much washing up yesterday as we were out do it’s so it’s sat half full and will get started after breakfast.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/08/2021 08:26

Ten mins maximum, dishwashers keep everything tidy!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/08/2021 08:27

**and yes the beauty is you sling stiff in them as you are cooking so it's practically tidy before you eat, then a quick wipe down afterwards and you're done.

idontlikealdi · 06/08/2021 08:30

On holiday in a caravan at the moment with no dishwasher. It's an absolute pain in the arse. Takes me about 5 minutes to tidy up at home, everything goes in the dishwasher!

catfunk · 06/08/2021 08:32

I really recommend getting a dishwasher. Life changing. You can load it as you go when cooking then only the dishes and cutlery to pop in at the end !

2andahalfpints · 06/08/2021 08:36

Definitely get a dishwasher!

eightyfourandahalf · 06/08/2021 08:37

Cleaning worktops takes the same time with or without dishwasher, but it takes a couple of minutes to load it, throughout the day so the kitchen is always tidy and you don't have to deal with drying the mess.

Can't live without a dishwasher!

DillonPanthersTexas · 06/08/2021 08:38

I'm one of those tidy up as you go people in the kitchen. Unless I'm cooking a roast for several people I usually just have to bang dirty plates in the dishwasher after a meal.

golddustwomen · 06/08/2021 08:46

I'd say 20/30 mins depending on what I've done for dinner. Don't have a dish washer, I do wash up as I go too. But the floor and table always need a good clean due to the kids. And I like to wipe over the hob everyday. I really hate washing up but I like a clean/clear kitchen to come downstairs to in the morning. Always have Alexa pumping some tunes too so that helps!

EL8888 · 06/08/2021 08:48

It depends on the person! Me about half an hour as l want it done and tidy up as l go. Fiancé; can easily be well over an hour

@Hemingwaycat my fiancé does the same!

BlueLobelia · 06/08/2021 08:50

I do a mix ture of after dinner and the next day depending on how I am feeling.

But generally 20 minutes. I am not good at cleaning as I go along. I would be lost without a dishwasher. But if I am cleaning proeprly it would be;

Dishes in dishwasher
Put a clothes wash on
Wipe oven and stove
Wipe work surfaces
Sweep floor
Mop floor

I am a messy cook though.

Indigopearl · 06/08/2021 08:52

If I have been cooking 5 minutes max.

If my DH has been cooking 30 minutes as he uses every pan/bowl possible and does not tidy as he cooks.

JaninaDuszejko · 06/08/2021 09:21

Bloody ages. 6 people in the house and DH and I WFH so by the time we get to dinner there's loads of mess before we even start thinking about cooking. I spend my life telling children to tidy up after they make a snack to no avail and DH isn't much better about lunchtime.

Glassbook · 06/08/2021 09:47

So much variation on this thread. Must depend on number in the household, size of kitchen and what you’re cooking. Multiple pans, oily baking trays and 5 people eating isn’t going to take 4 minutes to tidy up.
