When did your teen dd start wearing adult sizes?

12yo DD is 5ft2, so as tall/ taller than some adult women, but very petite with it. She wears some child sizes 11-12, some 12-13. She is finding the kids sections quite limited though.

I am generally a size 12/14, and have been my entire adult life (with brief trips to size 10!) I can’t quite picture what adult size would fit her, maybe 4/6? But there probably aren’t many of those in the shops anyway?

Should I point her to the adult sections to have a browse?

Probably about 13/14 (when similar height to your DD12) she started wearing a mixture. So still wearing teen ranges eg in New Look plus teen sizes in eg Next (mostly only available online) and H&M but also size 6/8 in adult shops. Shops aimed at younger adults tend to have range of clothes in smaller sizes. She’s now 16 and 5’5” and very slim and tends to wear Superdry (mainly sales stuff), H&M, Hollister for jeans (size 3 whatever that means!), basics from Next or M&S in size 8/10. We have struggled a bit though as she’s not interested in wearing anything too revealing (short skirts, crop tops, tops which either show your bra or you have to go without) and a lot of the shops aimed at teenagers or young adults have lots of that.

H&M and Primark sizes 4 and 6 are the best fit on my 12 year old DD (5'4", very skinny). It's worth checking them out, she's really enjoyed finding new stuff. And I really enjoy her pleasure in some of the trends.

Glassbook · 05/08/2021 09:10

Matalan has a teen range too.

It’s the perfect time to find bargains on the sale rails in women’s departments too. Size 6 and 8 fit my 12 year old.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/08/2021 09:10

DD1 was 11 and DD2 10. DD1 is tiny framed although not short, DD2 is shorter and has a medium frame. Shops like Primark, H&M and Hollister do teeny adult sizes like 4 or XXS which are often smaller than 11-12 in the kids sections.

SoupDragon · 05/08/2021 09:12

DD is tall and was wearing a few size 4 things from Primark from age 11.

SoupDragon · 05/08/2021 09:12

New Look teen range was good too.

idril · 05/08/2021 09:17

Primark size 4 or 6 fiit my (skinny at the time) daughter at that age.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 05/08/2021 09:18
  1. She's a 6-8 in Primark jeans (just depends on the style as to which size) & XS on top. She's the same height as me (5' 6.5") so we find adult sizes fit her well length wise. She has some things from the New Look teen range too.
Yubaba · 05/08/2021 09:19

Dd was about 12, most shops have at least a size 6 and shops aimed at teens will probably have size 4.
DD is nearly 15 and wears a size 6 or XS and she can get most things she wants.

beenbotheringme · 05/08/2021 09:22

My daughter has just turned 13. She's 5ft 5 and has just moved up to a size 8 - was a 6 previously. My daughter is slim and has been fitting in a size 6 since 12. Her hips have suddenly widened (literally overnight) hence now an 8!

This is in age appropriate shops. I imagine an 8 in M&S / next would absolutely drown her.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 05/08/2021 09:23

Aged 13 she first bought some Primark adult size 4-6 clothes and also still shopped in teen ranges at H&M and TopShop
This summer aged 14 she officially has boobs and hips and size 8 fits her in most adult shops she is interested in ie Primark, Zara etc
Size 8 is too big in M&S and Next and has to get size 6 there but mostly she doesn't want to shop there anyway.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 05/08/2021 09:25

DD is 5ft 4 now and I think might still grow up a bit more.

thewreckingcrew · 05/08/2021 09:26

About 12 or 13. The divided range in H&M is good for teens. But I still try and buy from the kids section where possible because you don't pay VAT on children's clothes so they're cheaper.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 05/08/2021 09:48

DD started wearing adult clothes in year 6, she's 5ft 7. If you look at the size guide for different shops you'll probably find that age 14-15 is the same as an adult 6-8 and an age 16 (if you can find it) is the same as a size 10.

It was quite tricky to begin with as Dd isnt into fashion and not a teen yet soak lot of styles didn't seem appropriate or she didn't like - ripped jeans and crop tops mainly but she likes bits from Hollister and jeans and tops from next. A lot of the Next jeans and vests are exactly the same as the teens just with the VAT added.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 05/08/2021 09:52

DD started in a size 6-8 at the beginning of year 6 but is a 10 now as she's developed breasts and hips. The bigger sizes also seem to fit better in the arms as hers are quite long but probably not an issue if your child isn't particularly tall.

reluctantbrit · 05/08/2021 09:53

Tops - around 11/12 but DD was always taller than average and most children ranges didn't cater for her anymore apart from the 14+ range in H&M Kids. They are good for teens if your teen likes slogan/graphic tops, leggings and jeggings. The trousers go up to 170cm height, that's more thann 5ft5 and DD wore them until this year when they got too snug in the hips and we moved to adult sizing.

I think we bought lots of size XS, S, 8 or 10 depending on the shop. New Look has a lot of decent quality tops but are cut small.

Theunamedcat · 05/08/2021 09:55

My girl was around 14 my son is 12 you can buy small sizes in most shops i think new look has a teen range

parietal · 05/08/2021 10:03

my 13 yr old wears the smallest sizes in Uniqlo (which is great for basics) and some other adult shops.

Ladyrattles · 05/08/2021 10:05

My tall eldest girl started wearing a mix of adult & children's clothes around age 13 but mostly just tops & jackets in an 8-10. My average size daughter started wearing a mix around age 15 and was wearing size 8s on bottom and 10 on top. My small son only went into men's small at age 17.

haba · 05/08/2021 10:07

My DD is 15, and has a mixture of adult/child clothing...but so do I!
She's 5'4", size 8 adults, occasionally 10 because she has wide shoulders for her height, still has lots of H&M 14+ size clothes, but I also wear that size for cotton basics. She's not interested in clothes really, but has bought a few things herself from eBay/charity shops, mainly size 8, as she likes vintagey styles.

haba · 05/08/2021 10:09

It's DS that will struggle more- heightwise he's starting to need men's clothes (tops fit fine) ...his waist is v narrow, and he still wears age 7-8 boxers despite being 12.

ExtremelyDisorganised · 05/08/2021 10:10

My 15yo wears a mix of teen and adult (she's tiny) it's quite a guessing game shopping for her now (ok in shops but really hard getting it right online). She started wearing Primark size 4 tee shirts several years ago, they were very long, good for over leggings.

steppemum · 05/08/2021 10:12

dd2 is 13 and has been wearing adult sizes for about 2 years.
basically when she was size 13-14 kids, she was also size 6-8 adult, and started crossing over.
Adult sizes aren't always the right shape, but now she is getting more of a bust/hips, they fit better.

She can no longer fit any kids sizes, except maybe a 14-15 if they had it.
Primark and H&M were good crossover brands. Bit of teen/adult mix

steppemum · 05/08/2021 10:13

I should say she is tall 5'6"

Camomila · 05/08/2021 10:26

I'd say an age 13-14 is similar to a size 8, and a 14-15 is similar to a size 10 or even 12.

I buy kids technical stuff sometimes (ski layers etc) to save on VAT and the age 14/15 is too big on me (5'3" and size 8/10)
