When did your teen dd start wearing adult sizes?

12yo DD is 5ft2, so as tall/ taller than some adult women, but very petite with it. She wears some child sizes 11-12, some 12-13. She is finding the kids sections quite limited though.

I am generally a size 12/14, and have been my entire adult life (with brief trips to size 10!) I can’t quite picture what adult size would fit her, maybe 4/6? But there probably aren’t many of those in the shops anyway?

Should I point her to the adult sections to have a browse?

Most clothes shops do a Petite range . It's worth looking there in a size 8 or so

I have 12 year DTs and we are struggling with this massively this year.
Kids range too babyish (and fucking awful looking at you River Island) and adults too adult. They do fit in a 4/6 depending on style for tops and some dresses, but anything without elastic or a belt for bottoms is out.

My DD went into adult clothes around age 11/12 but she is very tall - now 13 and is 5 feet 8 and a half inches! I generally just get her a size 10 -12 as she is a very average weight/waist size - so not super slim but not large either.

DD started her periods at age 10. By age 12, she was in size 12.

Reading back you may struggle with the leg length in normal sizing if your daughter is 5 foot 2, the reason I had to move mine into adult clothing is that everything was too short in the leg for my DD.

So adult petite ranges sounds like a good idea - shorter leg length etc.

My DD is almost 11 and fits into a women's small or extra small in most places I shop, although she does have a few things from Primark and New Look teen ranges, mostly jeans and leggings as women's still tend to be a little long for her, she's just under 5 foot tall. She mostly prefers to shop from the women's range in Primark now rather than the kids.

She’s 5ft2 but seems to be mostly leg! Part of the trouble with finding clothes for her has been the leg to waist ratio, anything long enough is too baggy at the waist and vice versa. I was thinking maybe small adult sizes might be a better shape for her.

Thanks everyone, looks like it’s worth having a look.

Dd is 11 and 5'. She's started stealing my tops and hoodies a while back. She likes that they are baggy. I've recently bought her clothes from the adult section of primark and an online shop in xxs as she hates all the pastel colours and slogans in the girls depts. we can't get away with that with bottoms as she's very slim and still in age 8-9 on average sometimes even smaller however bottoms are easier to get in plain colours

liveforsummer · 05/08/2021 12:02

Also she only wears shorts so length isn't a problem

Echobelly · 05/08/2021 12:04

DD (13) started wearing size 8 last year when she was about 12.5 and 5ft2, same height as me (I was an 8 pre kids but with middle age mostly a 12 now).

Wtfdoipick · 05/08/2021 12:08

9 and already wearing a few adults, she's very tall and slim and the right leg length is too wide in children's so we either end up with too short or too baggy dresses. A 4 if we can find one is perfect as long as it isn't cut to show a bust she hasn't got.

Hoodies are better in adult sizes as she has long arms (she's mostly legs and arms)
