Audiobook recommendations?

I have unwittingly signed up to amazon audible. Pretty sure I cancelled it after the 30 free days but here I am with 6 credits to use up.

I don't really "do" audiobooks, and don't really know where to start, but think I could listen to some while pottering around in the evening.
Any suggestions?

Also, when I DO cancel, will I lose the books?

What kind of books do you like to read OP?
You won't lose any books when you cancel. Once you have them they are yours.

ImFree2doasiwant · 03/08/2021 20:50

Ah thank you, that's really helpful to know. I read all sorts really, whatever I can find in the community library (telephone box!). Or book club suggestions. Recent book club reads have been The beekeeper of Aleppo, Midnight Library, Thursday Murder Cllub although I didn't particularly enjoy any of them (helpful...).

I did enjoy Where the Crawdads sing. I quite like historical fiction. I do enjoy a thriller, but possibly not on audiobook.

I'm open to something funny too I think. Or, something cheerful and positive.

Given what you like to read I would recommend American Dirt. Brilliant narrator.

Frenchfancy · 03/08/2021 20:56

Mind you I'm not sure you could class it as cheerful.

ThatLibraryMiss · 03/08/2021 21:00

My dear, I wanted to tell you if you like historical fiction. I also enjoyed Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. The Mirror and the Light completes the trilogy but I didn't like it as much.

If you like urban fantasy, Rivers of London is a great series.

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/08/2021 21:01

Rivers of London
St Mary's Chronicles
A Thousand Ships
The Children of Jocasta
The Corset
The Martian
The Vinyl Detective
A Dance to the Music of Time
How Not to be a Boy
Things in Jars
Once Upon a River
The Unwomanly Face of War
The Five
The Murder of Harriet Monkton

I didn't like the Thursday Murder Club either and I've been put off The Midnight Library by some of the reviews.

I really like The Shardlake series by CJ Sansom on audible and I loved Blood and Sugar and Daughters of Night by Laura Shepherd-Robinson. They are historical novels.

The Strike books are really good. Robert Glenister does a great job narrating them.
I have been listening to Jo Spain's Tom Reynolds series which are crime stories read in a lovely Irish accent.

RightOnTheEdge · 03/08/2021 21:04

Disfordarkchocolate Things in jars is really not my normal kind of thing but I enjoyed it. I loved the characters!

CrabbyCat · 03/08/2021 21:07

I find I can listen to different things than I enjoy reading as you can tune out for 5 minutes in a long winded passage. I find the classics can be quite good as they are also more written to be read aloud / in sections, I've enjoyed listening to various longer classics like War and Peace and some Charles Dickens I've never managed to finish reading. Similarly, I've enjoyed listened to several non fiction books that would be harder work to read.

If you cancel membership you'll loose the credits you haven't used to buy books, but threaten to cancel and they've always given me the option to pause membership.

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/08/2021 21:08

I know exactly what you mean @RightOnTheEdge. I loved the characters, she is an excellent author.

ImFree2doasiwant · 03/08/2021 21:09

@Frenchfancy I just saw that one recommended elsewhere too, thanks.

If you aren't squeamish I really recommend "unnatural causes" it's an autobiography by the leading pathologist in the UK. He talks about how he got to his position and some high profile cases... so interesting! By far the best one I've listened to...

ImFree2doasiwant · 03/08/2021 21:22

Oh lots more replies appeared, thank you.

@CrabbyCat I did think I might listen to something a bit different to the sort of books I read, although I will give most things a go.

Disfordarkchocolate I don't think I'd have enjoyed reading the book as much.
The narrator brought the characters to life so well and I loved her accent.
I always think of it as Tings in jars now! Grin

I enjoyed the st marys chronicles as something light. I’ve just finished all 19. Audio books of the Simon Scarrow Rome series. Really loved it and very sad I’ve run out of books to listen to!

EastWestWhosBest · 03/08/2021 21:52

I really liked Company of Liars.
It’s set in the time of the plague and although it was written a few years ago it has echos of today.

User987654124 · 03/08/2021 21:52

I enjoyed Unnatural Causes, I Am Not Your Baby Mother (really interesting and fun) and The Other Passenger was pretty easy listening.

The hearts invisible furies by John Boyne, Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and More than a woman by Caitlin Moran. I’m an avid audiobook listener and I would say these 3 have been my absolute favourites over the last few years.

I didn’t get the Thursday Murder Club either. Really didn’t understand why it was so well loved. It was ok... but a bit of a chore to get through!

pandora206 · 03/08/2021 22:02

If you enjoyed Where the Crawdads sing you might like the Girl with the Louding Voice. It's set in Nigeria and a very dramatic emotional story.

For an historical novel try Burial Rites. I also enjoyed Hamnet. I also listened to Behind Her Eyes after watching the Netflix series, which is a thriller, and well worth a listen.

It took me a while to get hooked on Audible - I was given a three month subscription as a gift - but now I'm used to it, I don't know how I managed to do boring tasks (like cleaning and mowing the lawn) without it.

cariadlet · 03/08/2021 22:10

I really enjoyed My Sister the Serial Killer.

DSArnott · 03/08/2021 22:16

This is going to Hurt - Adam Kay

Vaxxers - Sarah Gilbert

PenguinLove1 · 03/08/2021 22:25

I loved Daisy Jones and The Six on Audible, it was so much better than reading it as there were different actors for each character, it really helped build their characters I found it really different and easy to listen to, id definitely recommend.

groundcontroltomontydon · 03/08/2021 22:28

I really enjoyed Juliet Stevenson reading A Room with a View, Martin Jarvis reading anything Wodehouse and Bill Nighy reading Parade's End. I like the brilliantly cast Charles Paris series for glorious daftness too.
