Audiobook recommendations?

I have unwittingly signed up to amazon audible. Pretty sure I cancelled it after the 30 free days but here I am with 6 credits to use up.

I don't really "do" audiobooks, and don't really know where to start, but think I could listen to some while pottering around in the evening.
Any suggestions?

Also, when I DO cancel, will I lose the books?

The Wolf Hall trilogy is amazing!

I was the same as you, an accidental member but I’m absolutely hooked now. Listen all the time, doing housework, in bed at night, on the treadmill at the gym. I bloody love it 😁

The St Mary's Chronicles are excellent - history, time travel, mystery, hilarious and brilliantly narrated.
Strike moves are brilliantly written, read and long so good value for money.

Cabin Pressure John Finnemore

Think the Unthinkable with Marcus Brigstocke

Absolute Power Mark Tavener

Ed Reardon's Week

Hut 33 James Cary

In and Out of the Kitchen Miles Jupp

PG Wodehouse

For comedy, Look out for compilations (unabridged). Don't waste a credit on something you could buy for £1.99 or whatever. Get £22 worth of the whole series.

Enjoy.

I second my sister the serial killer, the fabulous lilting narrator really made it come alive.
The stranding is a recent favourite, don't think I would have picked it up to read but really enjoyed it.

The audiobook version of Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine is absolutely superb.

Also really enjoyed The night she disappeared by Lisa Jewell and The secrets of strangers by Charity Norman.

David Attenborough - Life on Air; read by him.

Starts off with how he got into the early days of television just after the war. He became head of BBC2, and producer of the Queen's Christmas broadcast. Then into his decades of natural history programmes.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 03/08/2021 22:45

The Sookie Stackhouse books are awesome on audible.

cloudjumper · 03/08/2021 23:03

Anything narrated by David Rintoul is usually excellent.

WingingItSince1973 · 03/08/2021 23:54

I loved books by Patricia Gibney, Rachel Lynch, Nick Louth and Carla Kovach and Rachel Abbott. They mostly are detective series. But from these suggestions have just downloaded Unnatural Causes and American Dirt. Really looking forward to these.

Blamelesscars · 03/08/2021 23:57

Alison’s weirs six Tudor queens series if really good if you like historical fiction. Not to be confused with her six wives of Henry book!

Love this thread! Now have a lot of new titles for myself as well as the OP 😀

QueenStromba · 04/08/2021 10:32

Another vote for Rivers of London - a little dark in places but very well written and humorous in places. The narrator is really good too.

I can also heartily recommend Tom Holt for very funny urban fantasy.

reprehensibleme · 04/08/2021 10:38

I always check out the readers - they can make or break an audio book. Favourites are Hattie Morahan and the incomparable Anton Lesser.

NoHeavenNoMore · 04/08/2021 10:40

I use audio books a lot in car. Have listened to all sorts. I listened to The Secret Life of Bees a few years back and it really stuck with me. I love it and have listened to it again and again. Brilliant narration Smile

7 husbands of Evelyn Hugo is excellent. And Eleanor Olliphant is absolutely fine.

My taste in audiobooks is the total opposite to my taste in books. I prefer humour or short stories on Audible. I tend to listen when I am doing something, travelling or in bed so it needs to be something that doesn't need my full concentration.

I've recently enjoyed books by David Mitchell, Robert Webb, Joe Lycett, Tom Allen and Jack Whitehall - mostly humourous autobiographical or newspaper column collections. Roddy Doyle works well too or books like Evelyn Waugh, P G Wodehouse. I also rediscovered Adrian Mole.
