Are we snobby

Whenever we go away on a city break or holiday we always have to get a room for us (me and Husband) and then a seperate room for our 5 yo. (As in adjoining). A few friends have said they shade rooms and tha5 were precious doing this. Just wanted to know what others think?

@diamondpony80

I never let my kids sleep in a room on their own in a hotel until much older. I’ve had staff members walk into my hotel room more than once uninvited so I wouldn’t be comfortable with a young child on their own even if the room is interconnected.
Have you looked at the link upthread? The reality of what she is booking doesn’t match her description of “adjoining” rooms.
NiceGerbil · 03/08/2021 21:43

It's not a suite, that sounds much posher!

OPs one is like ones we have had-

Main room with double bed wardrobe telly etc.

With kids where the space for a sofabed for any kids would be. In the corner is boxed off and a small cosy room with (usually IME) bunks.

In general a little bigger than eg your premier Inn -

It's a good use of space designed specifically for families.

They're awesome!

Sillysuzie · 03/08/2021 21:46

I always get an apartment style room. Kids need their space or won't settle. So abroad is a 2 bedroom apartment and uk we don't bother with hotels cause a caravan is cheaper

Pegasusmail · 03/08/2021 21:49

We always get an interconnecting room so that dc (we've two) can go to sleep before 9pm as we usually go to bed at 11pm or later.

If we are all up it's a disaster. I feel ratty and like I haven't had a break and dc are tired.

PickAChew · 03/08/2021 21:50

No, I think you just value your sleep!

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 03/08/2021 21:54

Not sure that it's "snobby". I wouldn't have had my DC in a separate room when they were 5, but each to their own.

PP have presumably already pointed out that it is separate, not seperate.

noenergy · 03/08/2021 21:57

We always get these type of rooms, they are very common in Turkey. One room leading to another. Where there is only 1 door leading out to the hotel corridor.

Do most hotel doors not have key chains on them?

Neverrains · 03/08/2021 22:04

No they haven’t, because they’re not twats.

It’s not really a separate room - if by that you mean a separate room with its own door leading onto a public corridor. There’s only one main door leading to outside and three separate rooms within the apartment.
LimitIsUp · 03/08/2021 22:08

Always used to do this - didn't fancy sitting there like a statue, barely breathing with the light off at 8 pm, whilst young dc tried to drop off to sleep

DerbyshireMama · 03/08/2021 22:10

Maybe five year old has lots of tattoos and likes getting drunk and swearing at other guests in the lobby?

Mantlemoose · 03/08/2021 22:25

I think irresponsible might be the word you are looking for - who on earth puts a 5 year old in a room of their own in a strange place.

Check out the OP's link. it's not really like the description in the OP at all.

Err… lots of people? We usually stay in apartments on holiday with separate bedrooms, so all my children are mn rooms on their own in a strange place. Even my 2 year old.
Mantlemoose · 03/08/2021 22:30

Ah, so it's an apartment then. That's not snobby at all.

With regards your comment To those anti adjoining rooms you know that you can lock the room from the inside and barricade the door with a chair.... often than not the door can be left open too (the adjoining door) to be honest if I felt the need to do that I certainly wouldn't have them in their own room.

Mantlemoose · 03/08/2021 22:32

@Neverrains - an apartment is not initially what the OP described and by the time I hit return OP had updated. An apartment is absolutely required for a family holiday.

Sparklingbrook · 03/08/2021 22:33

Yes, i think replace 'snobby' with 'normal' TBH.

eightlivesdown · 03/08/2021 22:35

Good option if you can afford it.

DingoDollar · 03/08/2021 22:42

Most hotels we've stayed in since having DC have had separate sleeping areas anyway. Opted for family rooms.

Or we get bigger apartments/self catering.

But for the odd nights here and there (Premier Inns etc) then we just share a room. They slept in with us until they were 3 anyway.

Birminghambloke · 03/08/2021 22:56

Not snobby. Sensible, if you can afford it. You’re the. Not tied to child’s bedtime!

gogohm · 03/08/2021 23:03

I would say flashy rather than snobby. Mine still shared with me at 19&21!

gogohm · 03/08/2021 23:05

Best chains I've found are Hilton's and holiday inns which often have 2 bed suites for about 1.5x the standard room rate and kids eat free

foodanfagsjokiing · 03/08/2021 23:08

Well I personally have always had my own room and the children have shared!Would rather stay at home than all share together.

VienneseWhirligig · 03/08/2021 23:11

We tried to get family suites with a separate room for DS where possible but in the US would just book a family room because it was just such an expensive trip in general. Now, it's just DS and me (he's an adult) and we often share a twin room to keep costs down if we go abroad. I wouldn't say it was snobby to have a separate room though.

TheChosenTwo · 03/08/2021 23:11

Snobby? I don’t honestly see how this is an snobby issue.
We’ve always paid for the extra rooms in a self catering place once they got to 6m and would have been in their own room at home anyway.
I always hated sleeping with kids in the room, they’re noisy which disturbed us, we were noisy which disturbed them.
Awful, particularly when you’re on holiday!
