What useful things do you keep in your car?

Just organising my new car and have bought a storage thing for the boot to contain the crap. What sort of things should I keep in there? I'm a childminder so anything child related is an extra plus point!

I have spare clothes and nappies, carrier bags and a first aid kit. Any more useful ideas?

A couple of old towels? I use them on the dog, on the kids when puddle jumping has gone too far, for protecting against sick etc

Pegasusmail · 03/08/2021 18:25

I always keep carrier bags for grocery shopping. Baby wipes. Bottle of water in case my windscreen washer runs out. De-icer in the winter

Emergency money

A map! You never know when it could be handy and google maps may not work for whatever reason.

A pen and something to write on.

A spare charger for my phone.

Details of whoever you have your breakdown cover with.

A blanket and jumper.

A packet of plasters. Really useful, keep them in the glove compartment. Many a time I’ve been to the park with my DD and would have been caught out with her cuts and grazes

I used to be prepared for every eventuality but I’ve pared it back.

Tool kit
Cross shaped wheel nut wrench that I can actually remove air gun tightened nuts with
Tyre inflater
Spare lights
Jump leads
Emergency money
Trolley change
Jumper
First aid kit
Umbrella
Tyre traction tracks
Spare masks
Shopping bags
Hand san
Box of plasters
Sun block
Sun glasses
Charging leads
Bottles of water
Cereal bars
Notebook
Pencil
Tool for breaking windows/cutting belts.

All but the last one (touch wood) have been used multiple times.

The dc can bring their own entertainment but the rule is that they take everything out with them afterwards. In the old days I had the kind of car where you could also find something for the show and tell letter off you’d forgotten.

A tyre compressor and if your car has small tyres, a can of self sealing spray.
I don't know if it works very well with big tyres.
Lots of shopping bags packed inside one nice shopping bag.

Sprogonthetyne · 03/08/2021 19:18

A multi pack of juice cartons and some mini cheders. Not the healthiest snack, but useful if we end up staying out for longer then expected.

Fizbo · 03/08/2021 19:19

After a terrible accident that saw many of my colleagues stuck on the motorway for 4 hours (some with small children) I keep the following,
Blanket
First aid kit
Few cereal bars and packs of raisins
Bottle of water
Seaside bucket (for emergency wee)
Packet of tissues
Picnic rug
Umbrella
I check dates when I change my car clock as have to do that manually.

OhGiveUp · 03/08/2021 19:20

My boot contains an old parka style coat, some gloves, a blanket and a small box containing wet wipes, latex gloves, a road atlas, a few carrier bags, dog pooh bags, a towel, a couple tins of nuts and a couple of cans of soft drinks.
The glove box contains spare reading glasses, sunglasses, glass hammer, a couple of £1 coins, tissues and at the moment, some cigarettes and a lighter. ( Not mine, I don't smoke )

FatCatThinCat · 03/08/2021 19:24

You're all very organised. My car is just full of crap that the kids have left in there that nobody has bothered to remove.

NoddingTulip · 03/08/2021 19:25

Ice cream tub (with lid) and kitchen roll. Handy if someone is car sick and you can't pull over straight away!

Itstheprinciple · 03/08/2021 19:32

After one of DD's friends was travel sick in my car, I now have several strong carrier bags (without holes), kitchen roll, latex gloves, anti bac spray.

A couple of towels are also a good idea, I've found they have come I'm handy for different things.

MyMushroomsInATimeSlip · 03/08/2021 19:32

Sealant spray does work with larger tyres, but you need the right capacity spray for the tyre size
