What useful things do you keep in your car?

Just organising my new car and have bought a storage thing for the boot to contain the crap. What sort of things should I keep in there? I'm a childminder so anything child related is an extra plus point!

I have spare clothes and nappies, carrier bags and a first aid kit. Any more useful ideas?

A disposable camera
Spare pair of shoes and socks
My cardrobe- clothes I may need - waterproofs - smart shoes - plimsolls- shorts- jumper etc
A 2 litre bottle of water

Probably loads of other stuff
I could live in my car but I don’t have much room for passengers

Lots of good advice here, just want to add:
Travel Jane disposable urinal (also good for vomit)
Pocket plastic emergency macs
Thoroughly recommend a rubber mallet. Last time I had a flat I couldn’t get the wheel off, it wouldn’t budge. Phoned a garage for advice and they recommended hitting it all around with a mallet. Luckily there was a hardware shop around the corner. It worked, the wheel came loose straight away.
There was an extensive post on the preppers thread about this (where I saw the Travel Jane)

A lot of the above, plus a blue Ventolin inhaler.

I have many things in my car, and I used to have almost everything in it.
Nowadays I scale back

Useful stuff that might not have been covered include:

Sports bag - I used to keep a bag of sports kit & washing stuff as at work we used to randomly decide to go & play
Clean t-shirt etc
Tent pegs, bungees
Random tools
Water, electrolyte tabs, mints
Wooly hats etc
Emergency hi vis
Waterproof coat, warm fleece
Blanket
Tools - screwdrivers, pliars, pen knives / multi tools
Emergency window breaker/ seat belt cutter
Bulb set
Jump leads and/or battery booster pack (see below)
Sewing kit - I’ve been called on for one a few times. The weekend before last at a village show I was asked by the ambulance crew on site if I had a needle - one of them got glass fibres from their flagpole in their hand (they offered to return the needle afterwards, I declined)

If you have a roof box this is useful:

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08JBJ6VKJ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

It’s a step that clips to your door frame giving an extra step up - when getting down don’t jump straight from the step to the ground, as it’s a lot higher than it seems

For your tyres familiarise yourself with your options:
Do you have a spare tyre or an emergency inflation kit?
If you have a spare then make sure you have a better wheel brace than the basic one with most cars - either a 4 way wheel brace, or a long extending arm and the right adaptor
If you have an inflation kit then check it’s in date, and bear in mind that a ‘repairable’ flat on the side of the road might no longer be repairable once you’d used the emergency seal spray - so consider whether to self fix or call the AA etc. If you have the space then consider getting a spare, even if just for long journeys

Battery booster packs don’t have to be a big case style anymore. Check the engine size of your car and consider one of these types:

(I’m not endorsing this one, just showing an example)
They are small and convenient, can be used as a usb power pack or for an emergency start of a flat battery

Only thing I can think of that has not been mentioned already is a small fire extinguisher.

GiveUsACoffee · 04/08/2021 00:49

A sanitary towel / tampon

MeredithMae · 04/08/2021 18:40

I have food and water, as I'm scared of being stuck on a motorway!

Angel2702 · 04/08/2021 18:43

Always have hat sun hat / winter hat depending on season, sun cream, wet wipes, carrier bag to cover seat or put muddy clothes in, pen, umbrella, raincoat.
