What would you pay for a 2nd hand sofa??

Sooo we need a new sofa (I hate sofa shopping!)

I have found one I quite like on the lovely Facebook market place!

Sofa was originally £1200 and the seller wants £800 it’s 2 years old which I think is a a lot as I can buy a new one for £1200 (I could just about afford this but wouldn’t leave a massive amount in the savings fund)

Would you pay? Or shall I offer more like £400 Confused or again is that still too much??

Yes around £250 I think, though if you love it £400.

Fullofglee · 01/08/2021 15:51

The seller isn't going to accept half of what they are asking are they op

Lucillegoldenring · 01/08/2021 15:53

My friend bought a sofa for £1200 less than 2 years ago..3 months left to pay on it and they put it up onto Facebook market place for £550 and got someone wanting to buy it an hour later for full price.

About half off is as much as I would pay but depends on condition etc.

I recently got one from Facebook for £50. Excellent condition and delivered. No way I'd pay £800 for a 2 year old sofa.

You can't give second hand sofas away around here. I'd pay £100 and no more.

This! There are hundreds of them free on FB!
MalFunkshun · 01/08/2021 16:09

Agree with pps- even designer sofas don’t hold their value that well. If you love it, save it - the seller will probably drop their price in a week or so and that would be the time to offer less.

Personally wouldn’t pay more than £250/300.

BeautyQueenIamNot · 01/08/2021 16:11

It’s been on for a week and it’s still for sale.

Will send her an offer I’m just not sure it’s worth £800

You could try an offer, worst case scenario is that the seller says no.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/08/2021 16:15

She'll take less if it's been on for a week. Just say your budget is £400 if she's interested. No more though, personally I think she'd be getting a good deal with that.

Silkiecats · 01/08/2021 16:17

You could look at ebay completed listings for what similar has sold for but generally I wouldn't pay more than half as soon as it goes not new. After that depends on condition and usage - I'ld expect it to last 10 years so take an average of £60 off per year but more off for the first two years so a max of £400 if in excellent conditions with very light usage and no pets etc. With more normal usage maybe £200.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/08/2021 16:20

People have an over inflated idea of what they think their second hand stuff is worth.

Regularsizedrudy · 01/08/2021 16:26

I wouldn’t pay more than £50 for a second hand sofa. I don’t care what it cost them originally. It’s second hand now.

PlasticEgg · 01/08/2021 16:26

Really I wouldn't buy a second hand sofa unless I had to. You've got the money for new so just do that. You don't know if it's been pissed on/jumped on/infested with fuck knows what etc. Have you even seen it in person?

If you're really set on it then offer £400. You can get a new sofa for £600 out of IKEA. I mean you can get a new sofa for £400 out of IKEA. £800 is taking the piss.

bowchicawowwow · 01/08/2021 16:47

I'd go see it first before offering anything and also make sure you can get it transported / through your doorways without having to remove windows. I'd be offering around £300 if it was perfect.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/08/2021 17:11

Our last two sofas have come from.the BFH shop. Both M&S, in good condition, cleaned and I paid £150 for one and £120 for the other. Plus £20 delivery. I think £800 is ridiculous

Same around here. Most are up for free but £100/£150 is the max.

No way would I pay £800 for a second hand one. We have just paid under £900 for a brand new corner sofa.

MirandaMarple · 01/08/2021 17:18

I've recently bought a Laura Ashley sofa and two LA fireside chairs (all separately) for a total £160.

Our BHF shop charges more in line with the OP's Facebook seller! I've never seen a shop so rammed with over-priced secondhand furniture. Must be to do with locality maybe?
Hotcuppatea · 01/08/2021 17:21

I think people are generally unreasonable about what they can get for second hand furniture on Marketplace. When I've seen something that I like there before, I've watched it for a few weeks while they keep cutting the price until it gets to the point where they'll accept my offer.

People seem more realistic on Ebay.

HuntingoftheSnark · 01/08/2021 17:31

There was a thread last month - called something like "am I asking too much?" from a poster who was selling her perfect condition second hand sofas, and everyone told her to drop her price.

Farcry66 · 01/08/2021 17:34

I have 2 second hand sofas, both from eBay. 1 cost me £1.50 and the other was £11. They are both cloth rather than leather, one was 4 years old and the other a year and a half. Round my way there just is no market for 2nd hand sofas. Which suits me, as my kids are of an age where it would just make me sad to spend lots of money on something and see them stain it!!

spinningspaniels · 01/08/2021 17:38

Depends where it came from, £1200 for a sofa is fairly cheap and I'd expect something mass produced for that with cheap springs and a cheap frame to boot. In which case, it's worth very little second hand.

Do you know where they got it from?

abstractzebra · 01/08/2021 17:51

Have you looked in a furniture charity shop?
I work in one and the maximum we charge for a decent, modern sofa is about £225 and offer delivery too.
Quite often we know the history and the original cost too as donators often tell us it was a mistake purchase but usually something that wouldn't bother a different customer!

CoronaPeroni · 01/08/2021 18:04

Bought a leather 6 seater corner settee, footstool and reclining armchair from Ebay for £250. Best £250 I've ever spent. No way would I pay more than £200 for a 2nd hand sofa, goodness only knows what's been spilt on it. Do you only have their word for it costing £1200?
