Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.

We're on a rare trip away, been looking forward to it for ages especially about having some lovely food.

Now I discover tonight's veggie option is mushroom risotto. Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.

What's the meal that makes your heart sink?

Goats cheese and red jelly gravy ugh.

busymomtoone · 02/08/2021 17:56

My heart would sink over vegetarian Wellington ( think some mass food suppliers does it) or veg curry when not specialist veggie restaurant ( because usually bland and shifting the veg no one wants) but one of THE BEST meals I ever had was a black truffle and mushroom risotto- it was amazing and can still list after it 5 years later. I live mushroom risotto well made ( wine , seasonings , good mushrooms) but agree bland mush can be sad!!!

HDDD · 02/08/2021 17:57

If there is only one veggie thing on the menu it is not an option, it's a compulsion. This is what gets my goat.

Roxy69 · 02/08/2021 18:01

Anything with chilli in it or on it, they always seem to leave it out.

SpindleWhorl · 02/08/2021 18:05

Something else that pisses me off is when someone organised a work buffet, and people contribute £££, and loads of fuckers who ticked 'meat option' help themselves to the vegetarian food, leaving not enough for the actual vegetarians.

Yes! This also drove me mad at school when there would be say 2 trays of veggie lasagne for us veggies and 10 trays of meat lasagne for everyone else and the non-veggies would eat the veggie one! I am finding this thread quite cathartic.

Completely agree with the mushroom risotto. It's always the veggie option and it's dull! I've been known to check menus before we go and if it's that then will avoid. I don't mind it if I make it at home, but I'd rather not pay to sit in a restaurant and plough through a bowl of it.
Idontknowhowtodothis · 02/08/2021 18:10

I used to run a pub kitchen, and always used to try and put something a bit different on... pea and mint risotto as well as a vegan curry - sweet potato and chickpea or something. I lived with a voracious carnivor at the time so would often pick a veggie dish when we went out so I know how bland the options can be. (But I do love a mushroom risotto with really garlicky mushrooms, and a pile of parmesan!) And 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

LalalalalalaLand123 · 02/08/2021 18:16

many restaurants will just have a vegan dish on the menu, and it’s invariably spicy.

Yes! Why is this? Who decided that veggies/vegans always like spicy food? I'm a long-time vegan but I don't enjoy spicy food, and my vegan DC even less so.

PurpleDaisies · 02/08/2021 18:23

My issue is that “spicy” food invariable isn’t in the sort of places where it’s the only curry/chilli on the menu. I’m usually disappointed.

LoisLane66 · 02/08/2021 18:24

Anything with meat, game, fowl, seafood or any fish other than cod or haddock plus sweetcorn aubergine and olives...++++ and no faux meat or dairy products.
Beans on toast or cod and chips or baked potato and cheese are just fine thank you.

Your nephew is a lucky chap, the Korean meal sounds amazing. I'd love to have a go. Can you recommend a good source of recipes please?

LoisLane66 · 02/08/2021 18:26

Mint in risotto and many other combos is 'orrible. It overpowers every other flavour.

inappropriateraspberry · 02/08/2021 18:33

Always end up with veggie lasagne. Now, I love lasagne, but when out I expect something a bit more special. I can make lasagne, or risotto for that matter, at home.

21Bee · 02/08/2021 18:34

Back in the days when I was vegetarian I was presented with a plate of undercooked peppers with cheese melted on top at a family dinner 😂

Footballschmootball · 02/08/2021 18:39

Once we went for dinner somewhere really upmarket which I was really looking forward to - and the vegetarian option was stuffed mushroom. It wasn’t even a nice stuffed mushroom. I was so upset! My husband had an amazing steak….

panauchocolat · 02/08/2021 18:43

Mushrooms 🤮🤮🤮
And most of the time risottos 🤮🤮🤮
Mushrooms smells cow poo 💩 and risotto rose vomited 🤮
Sorry op …
I hope you find a pizzaria haha

Imohsotired · 02/08/2021 18:44

Mushroom risotto and tomato pasta for me. It’s like I’m raiding my student cupboard all over again.

Dh took me for a veggie tasting menu at a 3 Michelin star restaurant in NYC for my 30th, still dreaming about the flavours

heidipi · 02/08/2021 18:55

My favourite used to be when the veggie starter was goats cheese and red pepper soup and the main was red pepper and goats cheese tart. Yay.

Zolrets · 02/08/2021 18:56

So many oh yeahs to comments on this thread! For me:

  • yes to only having one thing anyway
  • gah! To vegetable curry. Often hard round cut carrots and hard beans bleugh
  • double gah! To mixed bean casserole (aka vegetarian chilli). Every hotel ever! It freezes well so it features on room service and many other restaurant menu as a quick defrost for the pain in the bum veggie. Also on every damn business class flight I’ve ever been on. Once I got it twice as the flight was long and did a touch down.

I actually like a risotto but I know what you mean about every mouthful being the same.
The galling thing is when the veggie meal is as much as a modest meat dish, you can cook better at home and you are only eating it so others (meat eaters) can go to a particular place. I have this experience coming later this week gah! I am having a word with myself about being grateful blah blah blah!

What annoys me these days is many restaurants no longer offer any vegetarian options - they just offer vegan instead thinking it will cover both types of diet. Which of course technically it does, but I’m not vegan, I like dairy, it’s so annoying having an even more limited choice!

I don’t mind the vegan option if it’s something inventive and interesting but I don’t want it if it’s got fake cheese on it.
Diva66 · 02/08/2021 19:03

Anything with butternut squash, it’s revolting.

@OakPine

Been a vegetarian for over 30 years. Eating out is pretty much always a disappointment. Pet hate is when the chef seems to have no knowledge of food groups and gives you something with only veg and carb. No protein. So for example, pasta with tomato sauce. I'm starving 10 minutes after eating it. Absolutely worst meal was in a fancy French restaurant in Edinburgh. The starter was 2 prawn type crackers (made from veg not prawn but with the same look and texture) covered with a spoonful of diced carrots and peas. It definitely came out of a freezer bag! The main course was a thin slice of fried aubergine which had all of the texture of a shoe insole. Again covered in, yep, another couple of spoonfuls. of the freezer veg. Cost for both ( company event) was £40-50. Awful.
Agree with this.

I don't eat red meat so generally have veggie options when out as otherwise can't guarantee something won't be covered in bacon etc

I cycled from London to Paris 4 years ago and for our post ride celebration dinner I was given vegetable rice. That's it. I asked if there was any fish left and was told no as the person on the next table (who ate meat but just fancied fish) had just got the last fish dish.

I was starving as it tasted just like packet rehydrate golden veg rice and as this was in a posh ish hotel in Paris it was a small portion. I nearly cried

Another occasion (in the UK) I was given a stuffed pepper - stuffed with vegetable cous cous. Served with a side of cous cous 😩😩 I'm not even that fond of cous cous, I mean I like it but not double servings with no cheese or anything

effiehabb · 02/08/2021 19:08

Quiche for me too or any pasta in a tomatoey sauce
