Restaurant portion sizes are huge

Paq · 31/07/2021 22:05

Does anyone else find this? Went to a pub/restaurant last night and the portion sizes were insane. I managed a third of my salad, brought the rest home and shared it with DH for lunch today. DD got through half her curry and 6'1" hollow legged DH just about managed to finish his risotto but then felt overstuffed all night.

And all I want is choice. Not foisting anything on anyone. It's people who insist it's ok that places only serve large portions that are imposing that.

EspressoDoubleShot · 02/08/2021 20:42

You’re the person demanding a mandated low calorie option
Others have said if portions are too big you can
Eat what you can manage
Chose from starters or mains
Dine at establishment that suits your preferences

TheJade · 02/08/2021 20:44

It depends the type of restaurant I find! The ‘family’ ‘good value’ places are whopper portions, but somewhere more refined always seem to have more sensible portions… perhaps so you order more courses and end up with a bigger bill 😀

EspressoDoubleShot · 02/08/2021 20:45

What’s in govt discussion, inclusion of your compulsorily mandated

grasstreeleaf · 02/08/2021 20:48

Eat what you can manage

And waste food or risk food poisoning trying to take it home to reheat.

Chose from starters or mains

Which means far less choice. Some meals I would never get to eat in a restaurant, such as steak in ale pie.

Dine at establishment that suits your preferences

Unfortunately there's not that many about once you start delving into this

So yes, I think mandatory lower calorie/ smaller portion options are the way to go.

grasstreeleaf · 02/08/2021 20:50

'Refined' synonymous with expensive. So social inequalities continually widen...

EspressoDoubleShot · 02/08/2021 20:51

Do elaborate on the govt and mandatory low calorie meals on menu
Timescale? How will it work?what’s the discussion
Or are you suggesting all restaurants are compelled to cater to your preferences

grasstreeleaf · 02/08/2021 20:53

"That’s why when it comes to food and drink, we want to ensure everyone has the right information, that they are offered a fair deal and that they are not unduly influenced to purchase less healthy foods and drinks. Put simply, we want the healthy option to be an easier option for everyone."

"On average the portions of food or drink that people eat out or eat as takeaway meals contain twice as many caloriess as their equivalent bought in a shop[footnote 20]. Research suggests that food we eat outside the home makes up 20 to 25% of adult calorie intake[footnote 21]_."

"It is right that those businesses with the broadest shoulders take the lead in implementing mandatory calorie labelling across the sector. Evidence suggests that the majority of large business already have calorie information for their productss so for many, the requirement will be minimal[footnote 22]_. The change will not be immediate, and government will work with industry leaders to ensure the requirement is implemented effectively."

So once this happens I can see that lower calorie/smaller portions will inevitably become more popular and establishments will start to offer them. Smile

Last post quoted from the same report.

@grasstreeleaf

You are starting to get quite offensive now to other people with cancer and family members with it or who have died - you cured yours , great for you but it doesn't work that way for everyone .

Wow! Who says I cured mine? Healthcare Practitioners do describes cancer as a 'lifestyle/ metabolic disease' and it is linked to being overweight/obese. I didn't decide that. My own mother and aunts also died of cancer. I fully know it doesn't always work out for people. But given the odds I find it quite distasteful to be told I should shut up and be happy that pub and restaurant portions are far too big for most people's calorific requirements!

I didn't tell you that but I did say you were offensive .
MrsMaizel · 02/08/2021 21:01

I'm actually surprised at all the large meals as most places here in the SE offer small and regular plates now .

You actually sound as if all of this has an unhealthy grip of your life .

What because I challenge the views I disagree with?

EspressoDoubleShot · 02/08/2021 21:06

Is that it?You do get that is completely different from what you are advocating.
That’s a covid update on a preexisting clinical strategy, expedited because of covid
I have actually seen that document before

A salad is not a meal IMO. It's something you have with a meal.
Do people really bring home leftovers?
Of course a salad is a meal! This evenings meal for us was salad - lettuce, tomato, cucumber, spring onions, pepper, new potatoes and poached salmon. It was really filling. BUT we are in our fifties so need to reduce our calorific intake if we don’t want to pile on the weight.“

Hmm. I’d say that was salmon and potatoes with a salad.

grasstreeleaf · 02/08/2021 21:07

And the government are showing some concern so my own cannot be that unhealthy....

EspressoDoubleShot · 02/08/2021 21:09

You are wilfully misrepresenting public consultation that bears no relation to your wish for tiny portions and

Tinacollada · 02/08/2021 21:10

LolaSmiles · 02/08/2021 21:17

Others have said if portions are too big you can
Eat what you can manage

But none of that is reasonable you see because all the whataboutery is needed to try and push a particular type of eating under the guise of caring about obesity / deciding that most people couldn't possibly manage or enjoy a standard meal out without being overeating gluttons.

Given the complex nature of obesity and that eating out for most people is an infrequent event, a concern for obesity would mean wanting large changes across many relevant services and relevant social interventions, but apparently what we all need is smaller portions, lots of salads, non-starchy veg and sub 600 calorie meals. Serving some extra leaves and filling half a plate with green veg is going to solve obesity. Grin

EspressoDoubleShot · 02/08/2021 21:19

So you accept your summation of the consultation is in fact erroneous
You are conflating unrelated govt consultation to your preference for low calorie meals and small portions

Not really 'a salad' that's salmon and potatoes with salad instead of veg 😆

@LolaSmiles, that coupled with running and going walking helped me loose 4 stone...and go from +40% bodyfat to 23% bodyfat. ...Smile
