New job - not been paid

Freshstartt · 30/07/2021 09:48

I started a new job at the start of the month, its a family run business. I expected my pay today but now im thinking maybe its tomorrow being the last day of the month.

Ive never once been paid on a saturday, it always falls to a friday.

Should i ask or wait to see?

Payment directly into your bank account can happen at any time during the day. But there's nothing wrong with checking with your manager now in case a mistake has been made - they can then rectify it today. Wouldn't be the first time whoever runs payroll hasn't been told about a new starter, etc.

meido · 30/07/2021 10:04

I would definitely ask. You are right that Sat/Sun due days will fall to Friday.

BeaBeaBuzz · 30/07/2021 10:06

Doesn’t it say in your contract when you’ll be paid?

Freshstartt · 30/07/2021 10:09

It just says the last day of the month.

Ughh i asked and they said its tomorrow. Super annoying.

If it's a small family business, chances are that they do the payroll manually by faster payments and your pay could appear at any time today rather than just after midnight, as would happen in a larger company.

DP works for a small company and his pay usually appears later in the afternoon, between about 3 and 5 pm.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/07/2021 10:10

Well tomorrow is the last day of the month, so I don't think you have any argument there.

They said you'd be paid on the last day of the month which is tomorrow - what have they done wrong?
Internetio · 30/07/2021 10:13

as above, I run our payroll before month end and have all reports ready for the end of month pay run, however that could be done at any time on the last day/ Friday before or depending on how busy it could be the Saturday or Sunday etc as we use faster payments, check with your line manager as they will be able to let you know how it is done, are you sure you're not working a month in hand? It's unusual these days but due to retention in some high turnover sectors where people might just disappear one day and never return it might still be done

Freshstartt · 30/07/2021 11:39

Never in my work life have i been paid on a Saturday. Its unprofessional.

If your pay day falls on a weekend it should go in on the friday.

Even if its a small business, how hard
Is it to schedule a bacs payment?!

Why do you consider it unprofessional? It might be unusual but that doesn't make it wrong.

Does it refer to payment on a weekday in your contract?

Because unless you have a huge payroll you don’t use BACS! If an employment contract states payday is the last day of the month then that’s payday. If they don’t pay on that day (paying it late I mean) it’s unprofessional but paying on your contracted payday isn’t.

It’s not unprofessional, it’s as per your contract

It's not difficult but it's expensive and BACS is over the top for a few people. Faster payments suits their needs perfectly and gives them more flexibility and control and is probably cheaper for them.

They told you that they would pay you on the last day of the month and that's what they're going to do. There's simply no need to restrict banking operations to weekdays any more.

MaverickDanger · 30/07/2021 12:03

It’s not unprofessional, it’s in your contract so you have been informed in advance to be able to plan accordingly.

Is it your first time working for a small firm?

redheadwitch · 30/07/2021 12:06

I would be concerned that it actually goes into the bank tomorrow. It all depends what kind of banking system they use. The company I work for and do the finances for, is a small business. Around 8 employees. We use a Corporate Santander account. Even if I was to schedule a payment for a Saturday, they don't do weekend payments, much in the same way as bank holiday payments. It would roll over to the Monday.

I would be concerned that they try to use the cover of "We scheduled payment for the correct day" as a cover for payments actually being late.

Just bear in mind that if any direct debits or outgoing payments bounce at your side due to late payment, your employer is obliged to cover any bank fees you may incur as they caused the issue.

luckylavender · 30/07/2021 12:08

Why is it unprofessional?

LIZS · 30/07/2021 12:10

Were your details on the payroll system in time fir this month's run?

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 30/07/2021 12:10

How is it unprofessional?

WeAllHaveWings · 30/07/2021 12:10

I have had written in contracts in the past where it specifies if pay day is on a Saturday you will be paid on Friday when Mary from payroll had to hit a button to send the payment run. But systems are now more automated and 24/7 and in a lot of places this is no longer needed and it is more common to be paid on the contracted date.

They have done nothing wrong and are certainly not unprofessional.

Unless there's a drip feed and it's a new business with it's first payday and the OP is the only employee they will have paydays on weekends as a regular occurance. I don't think its a stretch to assume they know that it works.

Why would they be trying to pay late?

rantymcrantface66 · 30/07/2021 12:13

If it states last day rather than last working day, then the last day of the month it is. Nothing unprofessional about that!

But if a problem if the last day falls on a Sunday…

I have never heard of payroll running at the weekend! It’s ridiculous and very unusual.

meido · 30/07/2021 12:15

Bit OF a problem…

Yes I noticed that after I posted, unfortunately there is no edit feature on mn. O and I are next to each other so it's an easy mistake to make on a small phone keypad - I'm sure everyone knew what I meant without you pointing it out. Hmm
ZiggysPFrow · 30/07/2021 12:19

Why?

You can schedule payments in advance, so for example in the two SMEs I run I would process the pay and then set it to go out on the day agreed in the (legally binding) contract....
