I started a new job at the start of the month, its a family run business. I expected my pay today but now im thinking maybe its tomorrow being the last day of the month.

Ive never once been paid on a saturday, it always falls to a friday.

Should i ask or wait to see?

Just realised that's not even meant for me, I'd just made exact same mistake on another post and assumed it was for me. I imagine the person on this post made the same mistake though 😆

^But if a problem if the last day falls on a Sunday…

I have never heard of payroll running at the weekend! It’s ridiculous and very unusual^

Why? Pretty much anyone with a bank account, business or personal, can log into their account and send money to any other bank account and have it arrive within 2 hours at any time of day, on any day of the year, whether it's 10 am on a Monday or 8 pm on Christmas Day.

If it's a small company they're probably perfectly happy to sit there for a few minutes and send £X to Person A, £Y to Person B and £Z to person C on the last day of the month, rather than having to set up a system that's less flexible because it needs setting up days in advance to run.

Just because it's not the norm for most people doesn't make it ridiculous or unprofessional.

It's 2021 computer systems have been invented that allow these things to be done in advance and payments scheduled. The poor old wages person doesn't actually have to come in on the weekend

That's all well and good as long as they're sending the funds over early. I've worked for small businesses in the past where the employer thought it was perfectly reasonable to make me wait until 8pm on pay day, because technically I was being paid on the day I expected. I dont think I EVER got paid before lunchtime when I worked there, it caused me no end of stress as sometimes I literally couldnt afford to grab something to eat until I'd been paid.

I think in this day and age, most people expect to wake up and find their pay in the bank. I wouldn't accept payment in such a slapdash way ever again, its so open to people forgetting or being rushed which causes errors.

Christ - now I look silly 😆. Just automatically assumed it was for me as it's something I do so frequently with my fat thumbs and tiny phone pad (and knew I'd just done it)

FunMcCool · 30/07/2021 12:40

Not sure how it’s unprofessional? I agree it’s annoying but unprofessional?

poorbuthappy · 30/07/2021 12:41

I've only ever worked for SME - some of them very small.
Still paid on weekdays only. Never on weekends.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 30/07/2021 12:47

I used to work for one of the big three banks, and if payday fell on a Saturday, you’d be paid on Saturday.

Sundays would be processed for Saturday.

I’m not sure it’s unprofessional. Unexpected if you’d planned to be paid today, sure; and probably disappointing, but nothing more.

TroysMammy · 30/07/2021 15:31

IIRC In a job I was in if payday (23rd) was on a Saturday or Sunday you'd have your pay on the Friday before. If the 23rd was on a Friday you'd be paid on the 22nd.

I'm pretty sure that is the way most people get paid but there's nothing inherently wrong with an employer who doesn't do that as long as it's clear and in this case it does seem to be clear. The OP's error was not to clarify the weekend situation.

A lesson to everyone else in a new job if they wouldn't have thought to check

TomorrowIsAnotherDae · 30/07/2021 15:51

with Monzo bank you can get paid early - at 4pm the day before your payment is scheduled to hit your account - I love this feature. Maybe get your salary paid into Monzo OP?

I’ve heard a few people say this but it doesn’t make sense to me, you still have the same period of time between paydays?
Internetio · 30/07/2021 16:06

the monzo thing only works for bacs payments that they can see in advance, most smaller companies such as this (by the sounds of it) use faster payments, meaning the payment can only be seen once it is sent by the originator.

BeaBeaBuzz · 31/07/2021 13:27

Did you get paid today OP?

Parker231 · 31/07/2021 13:52

I work for a large global company. We all get paid on the last calendar day of the month (today). Don’t see what is unprofessional about it being the last calendar day instead of the last working day.
