Where should I book a few days always at the end of September? I live on the south east coast so have done Hever, Dover, Knole, Leeds Castle etc.

Two adults, no children to keep entertained Smile, give me your best suggestions please.

My favourite was Hampton Court Palace.

MorvaanReed · 27/07/2021 22:00

Some where in the region of Orford and Framlingham would be my choice.

BertieBob · 27/07/2021 22:03

South East Wales! You've got a bunch of great castles. Caerphilly, Raglan, Chepstow, Cardiff, Fonmon, Castell Coch to name a few.

StarryStarrySocks · 27/07/2021 22:06

Aberdeenshire! Lots of lovely castles, and nice beaches too.

ISeeTheLight · 27/07/2021 22:08

Northumberland. Or Lumley Castle in Chester le street (and visit Durham).

DojoWojo · 27/07/2021 22:08

Bodiam Castle

rabbitwoman · 27/07/2021 22:08

Oooo, yes, I absolutely second the Isle of Wight - there is an apartment in Carisbrooke Castle itself that you can stay in......

Runningupthecurtains · 27/07/2021 22:09

Northumbrian has more castles than you can shake a stick at.

Runningupthecurtains · 27/07/2021 22:10

*Northumberland

I was in Exeter for the first time yesterday- really interesting and some pretty bits. Very, very hilly though!

HelloDulling · 27/07/2021 22:11

A night or two in Woodstock. Have a day at Blenheim, then get the bus into Oxford for a tour of the colleges and a look around the Ashmolean museum.

HelloDulling · 27/07/2021 22:12

Norfolk has some good NT houses as well as Holkham Hall and Sandringham.

Mykittensmittens · 27/07/2021 22:14

Peak District.

Visit Chatsworth House which is just spectacular, then Haddon Hall and Hardwick. Then slightly further south is Calke Abbey which is a fascinating country seat which hasn’t been renovated since it’s last owner died there many many decades ago and it very interesting.

Mammyloveswine · 27/07/2021 22:18

Northumberland!!!

Honeyroar · 27/07/2021 22:21

Chatsworth is a good one for children. They have a really child friendly garden, they can paddle in the fountain, run on the grass, do the little maize etc. There’s a petting farm, adventure playground, huge parklands. Plus as someone mentioned there are lots of other historical houses nearby. Not to mention the gorgeous countryside around there.

Warwick castle is good. Also Dover

Seconded! Defo Peak District

Wow, lots of ideas, I am liking the sound of Northumberland or South East Wales but also love the look of Chatsworth House, ok, off to do some research 🤓

Isle of Wight - Osborne House, Carisbrook Castle, Mottistone, Yarmouth Castle, St Catherine’s, Needles Old Battery.
Then a trip by hovercraft over to Southsea Castle or fastcat for the Historic Dockyard.
Or
Arundel. Cathedral, castle drive to Petworth, drive to Chichester and Uppark.

They've no children.
DrunkenKoala · 27/07/2021 22:37

Caernarfon castle in North Wales, also close to Snowdonia and Anglesey.

Ariela · 27/07/2021 22:39

I'd stay in one. Landmark Trust have a few www.landmarktrust.org.uk However the popular ones get booked up very quickly.

Personally I hanker after staying in the Semaphore Tower - could do a day trip to Windsor or Hampton Court or one of the nearby NT properties or Wisley Gardens from there. Or head to Sandringham and stay in Appleton Water Tower and visit the house and gardens.
Or there's a Martello Tower at Aldeburgh you could stay in and visit Orford or Framlingham Castles
