What does ‘Telegraph’ mean on a bank statement?

I’ve just had a notification on my phone to say £12.99 has been taken out of my bank account by someone or something called ‘Telegraph’. Does anyone know who or what this means please because I’ve never heard of it and don’t know what it is? Does it mean someone has hacked my account?

My first guess would be that at some point you've signed up for a Telegraph newspaper subscription. Is that possible?

FourTeaFallOut · 27/07/2021 21:29

Did you sign up for the newspaper subscription?

FourTeaFallOut · 27/07/2021 21:29

Or did you get the free trial and forget to cancel three months later, like I did? Grin

I don’t think so. I wouldn’t pay to read an online newspaper.

I think it's too little an amount to be a subscription but could it have been soduco or something?

LibertyFLiberty · 27/07/2021 21:30

This. Its the news paper subscription
FourTeaFallOut · 27/07/2021 21:30

No, that's the right amount for the digital subscription.

Blankspace4 · 27/07/2021 21:31

Telegraph is also a messaging app

NeonJellyBaby · 27/07/2021 21:31

How the hell have I managed to sign myself up for that without realising?

OP posts:
movingadviceneeded · 27/07/2021 21:31

I took out a Telegraph subscription without reading it. It's really easily done!

Blankspace4 · 27/07/2021 21:32

Oh sorry - disregard my prior reply - that’s TeleGRAM

Whinginadeville · 27/07/2021 21:32

You've read your free articles and registered for 3 free months that's run out and now you're being charged

NeonJellyBaby · 27/07/2021 21:34

How do I cancel it?! Surely they notify you when they start charging you?!

OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 27/07/2021 21:36

No, they just assume that you accepted the terms by not cancelling prior.

FourTeaFallOut · 27/07/2021 21:37

I think I was able to do it easily by logging in to my account but I imagine that will be your first hurdle given you have no knowledge of it.

Nerfelite · 27/07/2021 21:37

You bank should allow you to cancel the subscription from your online banking.

Alternatively, go onto the telegraph website and try to log in with your details.

OliviaNewtAndJohn · 27/07/2021 21:37

Is the notification on your phone authentic? You say in the title it’s on a bank statement, but your post says phone notification.

Blankspace4 · 27/07/2021 21:37

Is it a direct debit or a card payment?

dementedpixie · 27/07/2021 21:39

Have you checked your bank account?

NeonJellyBaby · 27/07/2021 21:40

I’ve managed to log in and cancelled it! I don’t even remember signing up for it in the first place. I suppose I must have wanted to read an article and put my details in and then forgotten about it.

I get phone notifications for my bank account when a payment goes out. Perhaps OP does too.
NeonJellyBaby · 27/07/2021 21:44

Yes it was definitely an official notification from my bank, and then when I checked my banking app it had been taken out of my account.

Now, whenever you go on the telegraph site, they will offer you ever improving deals until finally they say, "fuck it, have it free for three months again".

MistySkiesAfterRain · 27/07/2021 22:51

Ahh I have ADHD, welcome to my world - the forgotten subscription Grin

They'll also try and email you into submission with daily reminders.

It's the only reason I got round to asking DF for his login details so I can read it for free Grin
