Do trains cause travel sickness like cars etc?

Just wondering ?

Dd gets horrific motion sickness and I was wondering if trains would be the same ?
The only thing so far she’s not sick in is the buggy she was sick in a forward facing baby carrier !!! And she’s too young for anti sickness meds 🤦‍♀️

Yes but much less so given they move across flat land most of the time. Make her look out the window. No screens or books.

Avoid routes with Pendolinos. These used to make me violently ill.

randomsabreuse · 27/07/2021 21:12

Less so than cars. Avoid buses/coaches. Try to get forward facing on the train and definitely avoid screens and books. Looking out of the window is good.

Pendolinos (and the tilting "voyagers") got me once I was mostly over it.

Can she go in the front seat? Possibly consider if you can get the car seat in the middle seat of the car (forward facing) as the height and clear front view helped - although I was better with an open window so it didn't help me...

I am appallingly travel sick on train.
Worse than cars.

Sit in the middle with pendolinos if you're worried. The motion is more pronounced in the first and last carriages.

EduCated · 27/07/2021 21:16

I have rarely felt ill on a train (except the Pendolino) - I think it’s that they're much smoother, no sudden turns, speed up and slow down more steadily etc.

Bert2020 · 27/07/2021 21:21

Absolutely agree with not using a pendolino, I was so ill. So much so I managed to get a lift home rather than repeat the journey back.

CurbsideProphet · 27/07/2021 21:21

I've not been on a train since covid but the pendalino was awful for me. The tilting 😬 I could barely read text messages. Normal trains were fine.
I'm someone who feels sick on car journeys, coaches, planes. I can't even consider a boat.

Bordernotboarder · 27/07/2021 21:21

I get travel sick in cars and also on trains! Agree that pendolinos are worse but I’ve had it on normal trains too Confused

megletthesecond · 27/07/2021 21:23

I get sick if I go backwards on a train.

whatwouldsueheckdo · 27/07/2021 21:28

Like pp, I get sick going backwards on a train. Also much worse on smooth high speed trains (TGV etc) than old fashioned clickers-clack trains!

hedgehogger1 · 27/07/2021 21:30

I can read on trains. Would be throwing up
If I tried it in a car!

randomsabreuse · 27/07/2021 21:35

Bizarrely on boats I'm fine with rough crossings with a tonne of waves but struggle with vibration on a smooth crossing.

I'm much better driving than as a passenger in the car for what it's worth, and can now cope with coaches and buses to a point (but haven't tried since Covid as I'm somewhat concerned that a mask would tip me back over to travel sickness on buses (Scotland so masks still required)

IWantT0BreakFree · 27/07/2021 21:36

DC1 was horrendously car sick but it started to massively improve around 4/5. At its worst, we could not go more than 5 minutes down the road without projectile vomiting and him feeling like shit for an hour. Literally 5 minutes in the car.
He could manage short train journeys OK. We did a few longer train journeys (45mins plus) and I think he was sick on two of them. Funnily enough, we did take a Pendolino once and he was the only one in the family who wasn't feeling ill. Go figure!
It's worth trying a train because maybe you'll find DD can tolerate it. I really hope that she grows out of her motion sickness. It's miserable and it's something that I think a lot of people aren't overly sympathetic to when you have problems travelling if they haven't gone through it with their kids (at least in our experience).

DrRichardBurke · 27/07/2021 21:38

It depends on how sensitive the person is.

Backward on trains makes me a bit green.
Mostly ok otherwise.

However I once went on the Rocky mountaineer train in Canada. Lovely two days meandering through the Rockies.
Made me feel awful!!! Must have been too smooth and meandery!

icedcoffees · 27/07/2021 21:39

I have to face forward on trains or I feel dreadful Sad and similar to others I would never go on a Pendolino again - did it once and had to go and be sick twice!

AlmostSummer21 · 27/07/2021 21:43

A bit, but less so. Also I have to face the direction of travel, I cannot sit in a seat facing the back of the train 🤮

Lovemusic33 · 27/07/2021 21:45

I feel travel sick on the train especially if facing the wrong way.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/07/2021 21:45

Trains are a lot better than cars and buses, agree reverse facing seats are a problem though

DrRichardBurke · 27/07/2021 21:48

Backwards in a taxi rivals boats for puke factor... especially black cab in London, in traffic.

careerchangeperhaps · 27/07/2021 21:55

I'm much better on a train. Can still feel unwell if I travel at the back of a long train (where the movement is much more exaggerated), travel backwards or read for too long though. And if the aircon fails, it can be hot and stuffy.
If DD is young, she maybe too short to see out of the window which can make any sickness worse. My (small) DD was about 5 before she could see out of the window when sat on the seat on an intercity type train.

AliMonkey · 27/07/2021 21:55

For me, trains (except Pendolinos) better than cars in that I can to some extent read a bit or work on my laptop, but only for relatively short periods, whereas wouldn't even consider it in a car and even glancing at a map can make me feel ill if on a windy road. But I've never actually been sick on a train unlike a car. But rest of my family all get car sick but none get train sick at all (or plane sick) but do on boats, whereas I'm fine on a boat as long as there's fresh air.

So worth a try but still take sick bags etc!

SageHeart · 27/07/2021 21:55

I suppose I’ll just have to try but I’m so anxious as she gets so, so sick. Car journeys of just a few mins and she’s vomiting. Baby Carrier made her really sick , can’t really bounce her about too much or put her on swings either ! She’s very sensitive

Buggy seems ok but I do need to go further sometimes than I can walk !!

Avoid pendelinos.
Start on junior kwells

TheSunShinesBrighter · 27/07/2021 21:56

This!!

Absolutely fine on all other trains. The above are too fast and last time I was in the toilet most of the journey being sick.

TheVolturi · 27/07/2021 21:59

Am I the only one wondering what a pendolino is?
