Do trains cause travel sickness like cars etc?

Just wondering ?

Dd gets horrific motion sickness and I was wondering if trains would be the same ?
The only thing so far she’s not sick in is the buggy she was sick in a forward facing baby carrier !!! And she’s too young for anti sickness meds 🤦‍♀️

I get horrendous sickness in cars/buses/boats. Trains completely fine.

@TheVolturi

Am I the only one wondering what a pendolino is?
Have never heard/read the word before.

Try travel bands (boots sell) just pressure points. I don't have an issue on trains but do in cars and on boats

@TheVolturi

They are leaning trains on high speed routes

romdowa · 27/07/2021 22:07

I get travel sick on trains if I sit backwards. If I face the direction the train is going in, then I'm fine.

FatAnkles · 27/07/2021 22:09

I used to get sick in cars, as did my brother. Dd(15) still gets sick in cars, but she's not used to travelling in them. She has to travel forwards on trains and buses or she has goes ashen. Her dad has a similar problem.

StevieNix · 27/07/2021 22:15

I get horribly travel sick, trains are worse than cars for me as in a car my way of coping is looking out of the front window with the windows wide open. Looking out of the side wizzing past makes it worse and with a train that’s the only view you have.
Also going backwards on a train makes it a million times worse.
The only mode of transport I don’t feel sick on is an airplane.

LadyJaye · 27/07/2021 22:15

I get horribly, horribly travel sick on buses/coaches and when travelling as a passenger in a car, but weirdly, not a thing on boats, planes or planes, in spite of horrific turbulence etc.

I suspect it may be a control thing for me (I can drive a car/truck, but am happy to give over control to pilots/train drivers/captains etc!).

If I HAVE to travel by coach or car, I find sitting near the front, totally upright, drinking lots of water and finding a steady spot on the horizon to look at (so no book or phone) helps.

@SageHeart

I suppose I’ll just have to try but I’m so anxious as she gets so, so sick. Car journeys of just a few mins and she’s vomiting. Baby Carrier made her really sick , can’t really bounce her about too much or put her on swings either ! She’s very sensitive

Buggy seems ok but I do need to go further sometimes than I can walk !!

oh, poor sausage. How miserable for you all. Must make any errands tough.

When I was younger , friends who'd been long term pukers were subsequently skilled vomitors - knowing when and with great aim / tidiness
One positive of it I guess! Good skill for life!

NiceGerbil · 27/07/2021 22:18

I feel fine on trains.

Make sure face forward.

Hope she's ok

SageHeart · 27/07/2021 22:32

@Tickledtrout

Avoid pendelinos. Start on junior kwells
I think she’s too young (under 1 year) the hv said there’s nothing suitable

Yep, both my DC get sick on trains as well as in cars.

DS once violently projectile vomited over a poor blind man sitting opposite him in the train from Edinburgh. He literally didn't see it coming. 😖

Tilting trains. Imagine the way a plane tilts into a turn or a motorcyclist. That.

I haven't had motion sickness since I was a child in a smoke filled SAAB going over country lanes but the Pendolino was a surprise reprise.

Had to go to Manchester to do a presentation to win a massive client. Vomited on train and at the client. That was good. We won it though.

I flew back to London Blush

I haven't been in the UK for 6 years but they were on the high speed Virgin lines back then so Euston to Manchester and up to Glasgow on the West Coast I think.

TheVolturi · 28/07/2021 08:46

Thanks @Malin52 😂 that was a nightmare for you, your presentation must have been really good 🤣

TheVolturi · 28/07/2021 08:47

Op, is it definitely motion sickness and not reflux? It's very unusual for such a young baby to have motion sickness I think?

jerometheturnipking · 28/07/2021 09:02

Right but how do you know if a train is a pendolino?

I don't get travel sick unless I read on a coach or end up in a rear-facing seat on a train. The worst one ever was when it was a long train and I could see the whole way up the middle and the back end of the train would basically disappear going round a bend.

randomsabreuse · 28/07/2021 09:56

Pendolinos are only on the West Coast Mainline (London Euston, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow route). They are heavily branded as they were new and fancy. Only on that route as the track had to be heavily upgraded to allow the speed/tilting.

Pendolinos are electric only but I think there might be a diesel electric (super voyager) that can tilt too so as not to naff up the timetabling on the west coast main line when they've come off/going to non electric lines (eg Devon/Cornwall to North of central belt in Scotland).

EBearhug · 28/07/2021 10:01

^I can read on trains. Would be throwing up
If I tried it in a car!^

Same with me. Some buses are okay, others are not. Boats are usually okay (though generally not tried Reading, because there's other stuff to watch.) Travelling in diesel cars is bad, and I struggled with test-driving a diesel car. I think there must be something about the level of vibrations in a diesel engine that just doesn't agree with me.

randomsabreuse · 28/07/2021 10:09

Pick Up Trucks are the worst. Felt ill driving one on a test drive.

Older SUVs that are a bit soft and proper off roaders not great either. (Wallowy)

The best kind of car would be something not too sporty but not too soft either!

MadameHomais · 28/07/2021 10:09

I’m travel sick on every mode of travelling.
I’m a bit better if I can face forward and don’t look at anything close to me.
Could she listen to stories on headphones?
Audio books help me.
