Can some work out the percentage for me?

Am a bit rusty on my maths..... Been a while since I was in school. Can someone please work out the overall protein percentage in this combination of ingredients.
Niger seeds 1kg 28% protein
Sunflower seeds 1kg 16% protein
Corn 5kg 7% protein
Lentils 2kg 26% protein
Mealworms 1kg 53% protein
Pellets 5kg 17% protein

So all mixed together in one big box what would the protein percentage be? Am I making sense?

Add all percentages up, divide by 6.

thirstyformore · 27/07/2021 09:50

24.5%

PuffItsGone · 27/07/2021 09:52

Adding them all up and dividing by 6 will not work as they are not the same weights?

Cavagirl · 27/07/2021 09:55

Niger seeds 1kg 28% protein = 280g
Sunflower seeds 1kg 16% protein = 160g
Corn 5kg 7% protein = 350g
Lentils 2kg 26% protein = 520g
Mealworms 1kg 53% protein = 530g
Pellets 5kg 17% protein = 850g

So 2690g of protein in 15000g = 18%

That'll keep you regular OP Wink

mynameiscalypso · 27/07/2021 09:55

18%

TeenMinusTests · 27/07/2021 09:56

You need to do for each one:
ItemWeight x % = ItemProteinWeight
e.g. Corn: 5x0.07 = 0.35kg protein

Then add all the ItemWeights to find TotalWeight
Add all the ItemProteinWeights to find TotalProteinWeight

ProteinPercentage = TotalProteinWeight/TotalItemWeight x 100

TeenMinusTests · 27/07/2021 09:57

(So what Cava said provided she's added things up right)

twinguilt · 27/07/2021 09:58

Was just coming on to say what @Cavagirl said - I agree.

clary · 27/07/2021 10:03

I make it 17.2% but prepared to be wrong

clary · 27/07/2021 10:05

Sorry 17.9 so yes, 18% really

Postdatedpandemic · 27/07/2021 10:06

I just want to know who or what you are feeding this to.
Oh and waiting for you to come back and ask about fat content Grin

MonsterJammin · 27/07/2021 11:20

17.9%

There's 2,690g of protein in 15,000g total weight.

ForCluckSake · 27/07/2021 12:02

What ingredient could I increase to make this to 21% or over but not over 28% protein. Fat content can be given to that would be a great help..... I will let you guess the animal

OP posts:
mynameiscalypso · 27/07/2021 12:08

You need another 460g (so a total of 3,150g) of protein. The easiest way to do that would probably be to increase mealworms as they are the most protein-dense.

ForCluckSake · 27/07/2021 12:13

Mealworms are mega expensive? Can any of the seeds be increased so either Niger or sunflower or even another high protein lentil or pulse ect? Am crap at this Blush

Does the total weight need to stay the same i.e. 15kg? If so, you need at least 3,150g of protein. The obvious answer seems to be increase mealworms as they are protein rich and reduce the corn. Whether that leads to a tasty combo is another matter!

If you knock 1kg off corn and add 1kg to mealworms you'll end up with exactly 3,150g of protein = 21%

mynameiscalypso · 27/07/2021 12:14

Yeah, the seeds would be your best bet. You basically need anything over 21% protein but the lower % it is, the more you will need.

PieceOfString · 27/07/2021 12:16

It's for chickens?

swapsicles · 27/07/2021 12:17

Depends on the animal, if its small like a hamster they will pick and choose bits so the protein amount will be different each meal, would going over matter too much?

ForCluckSake · 27/07/2021 12:18

This is so confusing but no the kg can be anything up to 20ishkg

OP posts:
MonsterJammin · 27/07/2021 12:20

Ok so:

2.5kg Niger seeds
0.5kg sunflower seeds
3kg corn
3kg lentils
1kg mealworms
5kg pellets

That will give you 3,150g protein = 21%

Reduce the overall amount of corn, which is currently dragging down the %.

If this is hens, then corn is basically junk food for them anyway.

MonsterJammin · 27/07/2021 12:22

Sorry, didn't see that you could go up to 20kg. That would give you more options but what I've done keeps you at 15kg.

ForCluckSake · 27/07/2021 12:23

Corn can go if need be

TeenMinusTests · 27/07/2021 12:28

OP. This may be a step too far for you, but in your position I'd set up a little spreadsheet where I could play around with quantities, protein and total cost.
