Can some work out the percentage for me?

ForCluckSake · 27/07/2021 09:45

Am a bit rusty on my maths..... Been a while since I was in school. Can someone please work out the overall protein percentage in this combination of ingredients.
Niger seeds 1kg 28% protein
Sunflower seeds 1kg 16% protein
Corn 5kg 7% protein
Lentils 2kg 26% protein
Mealworms 1kg 53% protein
Pellets 5kg 17% protein

So all mixed together in one big box what would the protein percentage be? Am I making sense?

I am even more useless with spreadsheets Blush

I don't know how useless you are with a spreadsheet but if it's any help I've made this one up, if you just type in all the same formulas in the same places on a spreadsheet it should work. Then you'd fill in the masses of each of the ingredients and the cost and it would work out the percentage and the cost for you. I flippin love a spreadsheet!

Wow that's great will pm you now for a link if possible

An alternative formula than @ProbablyLate

In this I have columns of Ingredients, Mass, Protein percentage in which you enter the starting figures

Then the protein weight column is:
Mass mulitplied by protein percentage and divided by 100
That shows you how many kgs of protein are in each ingredient

Sum each of the columns go give Total weight and total Protein weight

Divide the protein weight by total weight and you have the overall protein percentage

(Note that I have entered 28 as the percentage of protein in Niger seeds, so I need to divide by 100 to make that a true percentage. But in the total weight against total protein I just divided the figures which gives .18 (or .179). If you want a basic number then multiply by 100, alternatively I have formatted the cell to display as a percentage

For your overall target protein of between 21% and 28% (0.21 and 0.28) you can use conditional formating in excel to highlight in green - such as upping mealworms (the highest protein), or upping some and dropping corn (the lowest protein)

Thanks for all your help everyone thanks to these great spreadsheets I have got a great blend of
Niger seeds
Sunflower seeds
Canary seeds
Flax seed
Squeaker mix
All mixed together come out at a 22% protein!
My poor hens have so much feather loss recently treated for everything mites/lice/worms ect so now trying to up the protein to promote feather growth.

Why not give them a tin of sardines every now and then or scramble the eggs and feed them back to them.

Postdatedpandemic · 27/07/2021 16:23

Or bung some of this in 52% protein soy

BarbaraofSeville · 27/07/2021 16:35

@TeenMinusTests

OP. This may be a step too far for you, but in your position I'd set up a little spreadsheet where I could play around with quantities, protein and total cost.
Oh not at all. This is the sort of thing that spreadsheets are made for.

You could probably add in a way of calculating the most cost effective way of hitting the protein target too - add a column that works out £ per % protein or similar.

To throw another variable into the mix, is there another brand/type of pellets available that are higher in protein?

ForCluckSake · 27/07/2021 16:58

I wouldn't have a clue how to this without all your help on spreadsheets.... But I didn't know they could do all that... That soy stuff looks good too ive seen it in Holland and barret before. They get sardines every now and then and eggs cooked. I swear sardines helped my top hen getting over shock from a fox attack lots of tlc and sardines and she was good as new Grin

Can we have a photo of the happy hens please OP??? Grin

Heyha · 27/07/2021 17:32

Boring but I think I'd up the pellets to up the protein as I'd be worried about the minerals- you know they're added to the pellets so they are a totally safe bet for being balanced. I know they aren't mega protein but you'll need the vits and mins to support feather growth as well.

Unless you adding a supplement too in which case I don't know 😂

Just want to say this is the most random thread I've seen on here, I'm not really a fan of chickens but your post has made me smile. Thanks OP and all the others that have helped work out the best food combo for some health hens!
